  • This is my non-technical review of the Canon RF35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro. Here you will find over 75 images I’ve taken over the last three years, primarily on my recently-retired EOS R. In this video, I review my work and give my overall thoughts on one of the most popular lenses in the Canon RF lineup. It is my go to for vacations!

    What are your thoughts on the RF35mm f/1.8? Does it hang with the L lenses?

    • @65WZ
      @65WZ Год назад +1

      Weather sealing is important to me. I live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a dry desert climate. It's dusty weather many months in the year. My current photowalk lens is the Tamron 35/1.4, but it's acting funny on my R5 (freezes, and need to switch off the camera and take the battery out). The Tamron has the lates firmware, and that's why I bought the RF 35/1.8.
      Note: cleaning the contacts of the lens will make it work fine of a few days, but freezes again after 2 weeks (tops).

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  Год назад +1

      @@65WZ That Tamron has incredible image quality. It's a shame it is giving you issues. I would love to buy an RF version of that Tamron, if they are ever allowed to make one.

    • @tinysteelorchestra
      @tinysteelorchestra Год назад +2

      I can't speak to the current RF L lenses as yet (I keep vacillating between the 24-105 and the 50 1.2 as my first one 😂). I did have the original EF 24-105 which seemed very useful, but it broke after a month or so and that may be why I've been reluctant to pull the trigger on the RF version.
      I do currently have the 16, 35, 50 and 85 in the consumer primes. The 35 and 85 are very good. The 16 is great fun for wide angle shots. The 50 is okay but been a bit underwhelmed overall. The 35 1.8 is a good lens in my experience.

      My Tamron 24 to 70mm f/2.8 makes people look like a painting sometimes. I don't get this issue with any other lens.

    I myself have an R5 and 35mm RF. I have exactly the same experiences with the combo you describe. But I also have an R7. for which I also use the same lens, but for completely different purposes. In order to obtain almost the same effects as you describe, I use a 22 mm lens for my R7 instead.

    It’s my only Rf lens. I like it. It’s functional and small. My biggest gripe is that I really would like weather sealing for what I do. If canon made small weather sealed primes…even if they lacked optical perfection…canon would have my business for life. I feel like an optically imperfect WELL BUILT, compact lens would draw from competition way more than a giant bazooka prime. But, what do I know. Canon doesn’t pay me for advice and I’m sure they know what they are doing.

    • @KevinDeal

      That depend entirely on what you shoot. 35mm on a crop sensor is 56mm field of view. So it's about what you see with your eyes. So if you like a focal length that just about matches what you see with your eyes, then a 35mm would be fantastic on a crop sensor.
      If you like the images and perspective in my video and want that on a crop sensor, I recommend looking at Canon's 24mm RF lens, which gives you about a 38mm equivalent, which is close to 35mm.

    I got this lens for free on a cashback Canon promo with my R6 and it's so compact although for pure portability's sake I prefer to use my phone for stills. I feel the RRP is overpriced for the performance it delivers IMO (purely from stills, although I can see how it would be useful for video), as in I feel it lacks a certain 'oomph' factor to the images.

    Cheers Kevin. I am in the process of purchasing my 1st camera since the mid-eighties. I was leaning heavily towards a Canon R50, but after watching copious videos on RUclips I’m going to with a full frame camera: R8 coupled with a RF35mm lens for traveling and street photography. I’m a beginner, so I hope my decision making is correct :) We’ll find out soon enough! Thanks for your excellent knowledge and posting your videos very much appreciated…ktf

There’s no pressure, it’s your opinion only/guidance :) and do you think the 35mm is a good lens for my purposes…big thanks Peter

      @@agentdouble-osoul158 35 is the perfect travel lens in my opinion. If you've watched both my review of the R50 and the R8, I personally would walk away getting the R8 if money isn't an issue. I think it's one of the best values to come out in the last couple of years. If budget is an issue, I would do the R50.
      You can absolutely get the R used for a pretty good price, but the autofocus on that camera is nowhere near as good as the newer ones. That camera is often viewed as a placeholder camera while Canon ramped up the R5 and R6 into production. I used to own it. Good camera for sure, but I'd take an R8 over it any day of the week.

    What is the lens hood for?

    • @KevinDeal

      Protecting the front element from lens flare. Equally important, protecting it from bumping into things. Especially important when using its macro features.

      To me, yes it is.
      However, only you can determine if it's good enough for you, so I will link you to my review of the R7 where I specifically test the 35mm 1.8 at night and you can determine for yourself if it's good enough for your work. The segment is from sixteen and a half to eighteen minutes and I will link you up below with the time stamp embedded.

      35mm X1.6 is 56mm, not 80mm. And since a normal field of view is 50mm, being at a 56mm perspective is pretty close to a normal field of view.

    Is this lens for cropped sensors? I am not familiar with Canon gear. What puts me off about Canon is not this lens but what I heard about their cameras being poor choice for video because you can use only Full Auto or Full Manual but not say Aperture Priority. Is that true? If yes this lens/brand would be a deal breaker for me!

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  Год назад +1

      The 35 is designed to be used on a full frame camera. It can also be used on their crop sensor cameras (R7 and R10) where the 1.6 crop factor will make it look more like a 56mm shot.
      I own both the R5 and R7 and in video mode, you have your choice of fully auto, fully manual, shutter priority and aperture priority. So you heard incorrectly.
