We’re looking at why Dream’s face reveal was basically doomed for the beginning. Last year in October 2022 the Minecraft streamer Clay revealed his face to his audience - only to have the internet and Twitter turn on him. The expectations from his fans to look like a gamer version of timothee chalamet weren’t met and last week he decided to become a faceless creator again by putting the mask back on. Could it have been the parasocial relationships he fostered within his community that led to this reaction? Was it a series of unfortunate events throughout his career that caused this overreaction of an average looking guy finally showing his face? This whole situation says a lot about our society and the effects of pretty privilege. Social media has messed up our expectations of what normal human features look like. Why Face Reveals Don’t Work if You’re Ugly #edvasian

Not a dream fan. But he isn't ugly. His "fanbase" built up this unrealistic fantasy, where dream looks likesome anime dude. And So, when he made the face reveal, it went crashing down in flames. I feel bad for him, since it looked like he built up alot of courage to do it, and based on his body language/angle he was sitting at, made it seem like he was uncomfortable. Doesn't deserve the hate and bullying he's getting.

For me....with Dream, there's two reasons his face reveal didn't do well. (1) Because fans were imagining him like a hot anime/manga lead character. They even drew fan art with him and what they thought he looked like and wrote fanfiction about him. They do the same thing for Corpse. Which is why he keeps his face hidden bc what he looks like shouldn't matter. And when Dream did the face reveal and didn't look like an Anime/manga male lead, they attacked him. (2) Someone saw a picture of him way before the reveal and he was overweight and considered not attractive. He lied and said it wasn't him (even though you can tell it was him and allegedlya friend of a friend of Dream confirmed the picture was him), lost a crap ton of weight, and decided to do the face reveal so that people would stop mocking him for that picture. But then, he got mocked anyway when he did the face reveal for looking like what? A normal ass guy. I mean it's sad. He got so much attention from his fans' imagination of him and now he wants to go back to the mask because before all of this, when he had the mask, he had ATTENTION. I hate that he got bullied for not looking like what people thought he looked like. This also could be a PR Stunt too. Who knows?

I have a hard time understanding how unconventionally attractive and unconventionally beautiful people are "unconventional" 😢 Like, the societal norm is not really based on beauty, but on little pick and choose things. Not everyone with the perfect nose is pretty. Not everyone with an """ugly""" nose is ugly. And not everyone that fixes themselves to have all those little things close to perfection will be any better looking overall, they'll just look similar to a lot of other people? I can sympathize with having millions of people debating whether you're ugly or not, though it's obviously not something I've experienced. But my sympathy ends there. The way his face reveal was hyped up, and how he's now using mental health and pity and his infamy to promote himself and his new song, is all so calculated and gross. He's purposefully directing his fans on a warpath against everyone who made fun of his face or the reveal itself even slightly - people are going "are you happy now, you bullied him into hiding!!" while he's joking around and trying to sell his music and get more attention. It feels.. gross is the best word I can think of. It's a PR stunt.
I'm sure there's some truth in his statement and he has actual, deep-seated issues with his self image. But that's even worse cause he's blurring the lines, using his fans' parasocial feelings and weaponizing mental health. He's making people worry for real.

But I think he forgets that a large part of his fanbase is young children. He only ever interacts with teenagers and older people who are his fans because he primarily uses Twitter, so I think he forgets that kids or neurodivergent people may be genuinely confused by his video. I respect your opinion though, and I could be wrong. I just want to hope this wasn't malicious.

He could continue to make content, avoid things about himself, and exist online like anyone else. (on his personal, non-dream affiliated accounts) It's seriously been months since I've seen anything about dream, you do not find it if you don't go looking. I have a hard time feeling bad for the young millionaire who is purposefully looking up things to make themselves insecure, or is acting insecure, pitiful, and weaponizing his young fan-base (even if accidentally) as a PR stunt
If he is being serious, and is genuinely that insecure, he needs therapy. Not to be drawing attention to himself, releasing a song, essentially weaponizing his fanbase, and playing a "Im soooo sad guys," card.

    • @imaginekudryavka9485
      @imaginekudryavka9485 Год назад +25

@@eee-xd5bo I don't think it's malicious either but it's definitely irresponsible. He isn't new to the social media game. I could understand it if he had just blown up recently, but he's had countless small and big instances where his fans have overreacted to something or fought with others/amongst themselves. He knows the power his words have, and how much people will and _do_ worry about him. And like you said, lots of his fans are very young. He has a responsibility here. And remember, lot of people just saw the tweet he made (didn't he post it before the video?) and it comes across as way more real and worrisome. It's hard to read tone through text as is, and weaving in self-deprecating humor and this sense of bitterness just made it seem like it was written by someone who is not doing well. Except he has such a huge fanbase that he can generate any response he wishes to make himself feel better.
"haha I'm ugly, I'll hide again, bye" Even if there was no promotional/attention-seeking aspect to this, it would still be in poor taste, imo. But knowing that he has a new song and that he's promoting the business that made his mask (which had to be agreed upon and thought out), is what makes it feel a little gross and exploitative.
I don't know much about Dream, I'll admit. But just personally, from the things I've seen, I don't like him (or his persona at least) very much. He has done things I think are wrong, but most importantly, he doesn't seem to take much real responsibility and he is very insecure (it must have been sad to have such a rabid fanbase and still feel like if people really saw your or knew you, they wouldn't like you), which is fine as long as you don't let your insecurities dictate your actions. It's exactly how I would expect someone to turn out when they become extremely famous, extremely fast and early in life. It fucks you up, plain and simple. It's rare to see someone who is well adjusted. Dream lives in a bubble of his own creation, where he mostly interacts with his creator friends and other than that it's just all about the Internet and social media. So his view on what is normal and acceptable is likely even more skewed as a result. Again, while I understand why he is the way he is, I think it's his responsibility to see how his words and actions affect others.

Dream isn't ugly, his fan base is and he was okay with them being ugly and unhinged until the leopard started eating his face (no pun intended). Also, in my opinion, if he had just posted the face reveal video without all the crazy build up, he would've been mocked because of how the internet is but he wouldn't have been dogpiled. The bullying definitely got to him so he came up with a way to put the mask back on in a way that he didn't have to outright say it. Also, I think putting the mask back on was a bit of a publicity stunt because people are talking about him again and he's got a new song coming out. Basically, it's a mess of his own and the internet's making. Nowdays, we need to be constantly reminded that the huge majority of the most beautiful people in media have gone through multiple plastic surgeries and/or cosmetic procedures. Even people who already looked beautiful before that. Actors, singers, models and specially kpop idols. Every single "imperfection" and asymmetry is fixed, so people forget that is what's normal. Now, naturally pretty is considered avarage at best and people are only considered beautiful if they have been cirurgically perfected and enhanced, which is very sad and could be dangerous, if someone becomes addicted to plastic surgery.

But at the same time the amount of foreshadowing he did with all his influencer friends getting excited over seeing his face made it seem to everyone like he was going to be the most handsome man ever (which I can’t blame because even someone like me that doesn’t care for dream wanted to see what he looked like too from those teasers).
So yeah I do understand after getting all of that hate that he would want to just go back to not showing his face again. But now that he’s already done a face reveal people are not gonna just forget about it that easily and you really can’t undo it either. Dream is not the best looking, nor is he the worst; like I wouldn't call him handsome. The biggest issue is the way he came about revealing his face. I don't watch him nor am I engaged in MC streaming YT. I did see a clip a while back where his friends talked about his physical appearance. In that clip, they talked about how Dream was blonde, tall, and built; basically hyping up his looks, which is in no way wrong, but knowing that they're misleading people on his looks eventually built up many thirsty fans' hopes. This led to a lot of coping and denying when his face reveal came out, as the description didn't match his appearance. Additionally, Dream does have his fair share of "teasing" fans, basically a form of thirst trap(but minus the cringe POV, music, abs, and veins) instead it was his hands, eyes, and hair. This again leaves a lot of the imagination, provoking desperate fans into forming their own delusions on how they thought he would've looked. Basically, this sums up to, don't make others believe you're better looking than you are. I'm not saying average people cannot do thirst traps, but I'm saying that's the result of looking average and pretending you're not. You're obviously going to raise a lot of expectations. This can also result if Corspe ever does a face reveal, but seeing how Dream's turned out, there is no way he's testing his on the internet.

Just wanna say thanks for making this video. You had some really good insights and I appreciate you taking the time to criticize ~mob bullying~ ish like this. Idk much about Dream so I can’t speak to his character, but I’m pretty online and saw the whole thing go down on twitter. Crazy how much it took over trending.
I hate when people bully others for their looks, even when they’re a bad person. Them being “ugly” doesn’t make them any worse, and being “pretty” wouldn’t make them any better. Any comment calling like, an evil piece of shit congressman uglyyy and nasty and they look like they’re dying of 15 different diseases and ooo what terrible teeth or elbows or eyes or wrinkles etc etc etc, it MAY get to them and hurt them but it will more likely make it onto the screens of people who relate or match that description and then THEY feel like shit. Tale as old as time, I’m sure y’all know what I’m saying. It just sucks, and it’s cruel. And even if it hurts ONLY the evil shitty person you’re trying to insult, it’s not hurting them in a place that truly matters. If they’re hurting people, it’s not bc of their looks. It’s bc of their actions. Insult their character. It’s far easier and will stick way better bc it’s undeniably true.
Maybe I’ve got a bit of a bias, so this kinda thing really gets to me. But I just can’t stand it when people loOoOoOoVe on someone cuz they’re “pretty” and that’s *IT*, or when they reduce their critique of some monster of a person to “they look like shit”. It reduces like the strength, accuracy, or sincerity of the compliment/insult and imo hurts your credibility in talking about whatever person it is. And it makes me sad! Don’t call people ugly all willy-nilly people! Be more kind! and more creative!
Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to say thanks for making this video. I think it’s a topic worth talking about. People are beautiful and deserve to feel that way. People also deserve to live in a world where we judge others and are judged based on who we all are, not what we look like. Makes it easier to see peoples’ hearts.
    Take care y’all!

I've suffered school bullying where everyone was telling me how ugly I was, I know how it feels. But people really need to chill. If you need your youtuber to be hot and sexy, you're the problem. Honestly, I really do think the media in general has warped everyone's beauty standards to impossible heights. Combination of professional styling, photoshop and even cosmetic procedures in some cases is usually used to enhance the way models/celebs look and I think people forget that. RUclips initially got popular as a way for "ordinary people" to broadcast themselves and their talents away from mainstream media which can feel manufactured and false at times. It's sad to see that those exact standards pushed by mainstream media has bled it's way into social media in a way I feel is even worse. At least before, the celebs and models were in the magazines, on the red carpets, in the movies etc. Even though those same standards existed, there was a distinction between their lifestyle vs that of the average individual. But now? They have instagram accounts, facebook pages where we get to see them in their everyday lives doing seemingly mundane tasks such as cooking, cleaning, enjoying holidays, looking after their pets etc and those lines have blurred because their whole profile screams "look at me, I'm just like you!" That "perfect" image is everywhere you look. And hey, if you buy the products they're selling, maybe you can also look just like them too!
