One really interesting event that caught my attention is Dream’s face reveal which happened a week ago - I know... my priorities are normal! Really though… in social media, especially TikTok, all you see are attractive people most of the time. I feel like average looking people are starting to perceive themselves as ugly even though they may be average. The way that the internet reacted to dreams face reveal is probably why so many faceless content creators want to stay faceless. Not only because they may be insecure or want their privacy, but also because of the high expectations viewers have on them.

People are already calling average people (let’s be real, mostly women) ugly. Even celebrities who are not hot are called ugly even when they’re still above average.
It doesn’t just make people fee bad about themselves, but also to have higher standards for others.
I read an article years ago that said people who view attractive people regularly are less satisfied with their relationships. Which could either mean they look at attractive people more because they’re dissatisfied, or seeing attractive people makes them dissatisfied with their partner.
I felt like this with my ex. If i watched videos of attractive men, i felt dissatisfied with how he looked. But when i stopped watching the videos I appreciated how my ex looked more.
The world is made for attractive people now. It’s almost a basic requirement, even when most of us don’t fit the basic requirements.

What's really awful is now anyone with similar features gets to hear 10,000 people saying (indirectly) that they're ugly--and I say this as someone with a similar jawline and chin who has gotten to hear 10,000 people indirectly saying I'm ugly. So that's...great.

A feature can look bad on one person and look good on another. It’s more about how the features harmonize. If the wrong feature stands out or recedes it will cause I displeasing visual.

Problem with faceless creators is their fanbase create this perfect image of them in their heads and usually creators never match the imagination fans have. I think even Corpse Husband mentioned that on one of his streams. That his looks will upset people because it dont match what they imagined he looks like so therefore he wont do face reveal for this and also his mental state sake.
People have meltdown over dream beeing 7/10 because they imagined him beeing 12/10, looking differently ect. Thats why so many people lost their shit.

When I heard Dream did a face reveal I looked it up right away, which is weird because I've never watched any of his videos. I just knew about him but still I was curious. The majority of Corpse's fans are actually so respectful about his choice not to show his face. I've read a few stories from people who thought they saw him in public and didn't walk up to him because they knew it would freak him out. I think that's so nice and considerate.

Correction on a few things: the sole reason he face revealed now was only so he could be able to hang out in public and make irl content with his best friend who finally got his visa to be able to live with him, he never almost walked in on camera (those were his friends joking around, they themselves didn't even know what he looked like then), he never tweeted a poll after he face revealed on twitter (fake screenshot), and the guy from the doxx wasn't even him because the actual guy came forward and posted a video on how he felt about him being personally flamed because of people thinking he was Dream. The internet is just cruel and just runs on hate, he isn't even a bad-looking dude! He did not deserve that treatment at all.

What I do think is also important to consider is that Dream would have gotten a lot of hate for his face reveal no matter what way he did it. He has a very dedicated "fanbase" of haters (for lack of a better word). No fan of his was surprised by the negative reaction it got because we were all expecting it to go exactly like this. Dream also talked about this before himself. He was basically like the people who hate him are gonna exaggerate and say he's super ugly and his fans are also gonna exaggerate and say he's super good-looking. I feel like if you're at a point were you're already expecting mass hate you might as well go in and reap the benefits from everyone talking about you. And you can't say it didn't work, he got 800k new subscribers because of the face reveal.
Also just a side note about two small things you got wrong: We already knew Dream's real name before last week. He never hid that. And that clip where his friends tell him to not come in was just a joke. They weren't even in the same state at the time.
Yeah agree he is not dumb, he knows how things work here and he knows exactly what's gonna happen. At least he is able to get decent attention/money from the whole ordeal. Even if the negative ppl makes it quite stressful

I’m not gonna lie, I think the main reason why people dogged on him so much is because many people genuinely hate him…which is understandable given some of the things he’s done. But making fun of someone’s looks isn’t going to make them change their behavior for the better, like…why make fun of something that is hard to change?

@@softyume1943 Dream did have a number of past controversies like any other popular creator but I would say that the mass hate against him is unnaturally disproportionate. As someone who has been following him for a while, I think the minecraft cheating speedrun was his biggest controversy and he had past tweets about Native American culture and the r-slur he apologized for and deleted. Although I feel like some criticism is deserved, the amount of hate against him on platforms like Twitter has been too far. For example, people were doxxing his family and spreading misinformation that he was a racist Republican. Honestly, I think the mass hate against him (invalidating his sexuality, doxxing his 14 year old sister, making threats against his life day by day, calling him a gr00mer) is disgusting and blown out of proportion. It probably has to do with his rapid rise to fame.
Um what did he do? You cannot just allude to it and not say anything about what he's done. If you didn't answer many people are just gonna pass it off as not an actual mistake, that he didnt do anything wrong and chalk it up common internet controversies and twitter making unneccesary drama

I have a very similar side profile to dream, and seeing even my friends spam the 🌜emoji the day of his face reveal had me on the verge of tears. I constantly have to hear comments about his chin as if mine isn’t the exact same as his. I feel so bad for him. The way people talk about his features is horrible. I actually think he’s really good looking.

Based on Dream’s leaked photo he probably had procedures done before revealing himself. The pressure to look good is so high. Probably teeth, nose, maybe filler in the jaw. Idk. Most celebrities have something done. Because they can’t be average.

Ed, I think you're charming and love watching your video's and learning from your insights and commentaries. I am an actual OLDE person, being a solid 52 years of Gen X. What I have learned from my kids and also from the young people I work with, actual Zillenials, (who are very weird and wonderful), is that one should refrain from commenting on peoples bodies and faces. Unless it's something a person can change in 30 seconds, it's actually kind of not cool to do so. My generation is obsessed with appearances for very unhealthy reasons and at the same time, a lot of what we did to allow expression of appearance in gender, fashion, presence, lifestyle, etc., is pretty cool. I see this Clay as being a person who created a persona and a brand and actually was just kind of excited to say, "Hi! This is me!" And wasn't really looking for folks to rate him, or smash or pass, or was fishing for compliments. He knows what he looks like. He was just....giving some content and also sharing himself. Why not? And the judgement and opinions about his appearance are kind of problematic. Who decides if he's "handsome" or "ugly"? Who set up these parameters? I am so over it. We all want to be beautiful. We all want people to look at us and feel nice feelings. Or...look in the mirror and feel nice feelings. What is not nice is calling someone ugly. What is not nice is constant scrutiny of appearance of others. I think the face-name matching effect is related to the kiki/bouba effect. Sharp sounds like ''kiki'' or ''Tim'' in a name are associated with stern, thin, angular faces and slow, curved sounds such as ''bouba'' or ''Bob'' are associated with rounder faces. It's sound symbolism and present even in toddlers.
I've never watched one of dream's videos but when I saw a girl bringing awareness to the bullying he was receiving I just had to see the video. Dreams face is cute, I think he's good looking and I think he doesn't deserve all the hate. He could go into depression or even worse.

Dream very clearly leaned into the fantasy of how his fans expected him to look. There's a very specific image that everyone in his fandom expected him to look like. Slightly wavy flowing blonde eboy hair, a chiseled jawline, and a thin athletic body. ALL of the fan art of him looked like this. I think that early on a fan did artwork of what they pictured him looking like without the mask and that version of him was pretty much "canon" and the expectation of what he looked like amongst his fans. He never said anything about him not looking like that which perpetuated the expectation that that's what he looked like and for all of his merch he had his brother modeling the clothes with the Dream mask on insinuating that it was Dream modeling the clothes. Note that his brother is slim and has the same body type that his fanart has while Dream is little overweight so it's hard for me to believe that he wasn't purposely trying to keep up the fantasy that he looked like that "perfect" image his fans had. So I think that Dream was a bit to blame for some of the backlash after he did the face reveal.

I think it has more to do with the fact that people already hate dream, more than just his looks. And also it can be hard when people have an image in their head of what you look like and it turns out you're not what they were expecting.
I also feel like the face reveal was a bit *too* hyped so that could also be a reason for high expectations. But yeah, personally I don't really like him, but imo he does look pretty average 🤷♂️

When I got a glimpse of the clip of Dream's face reveal, I seriously thought that his fans were probably over the moon already since they both got a face reveal and got to see that he actually looks pretty good. It took just a few days after that for me to start seeing memes and jokes pointed towards his looks. Just really sad to see a lot of people who once seemed to follow his orders like the obsessive fans they are suddenly turn against him just because he didn't look like how they imagined him to be.
