It’s a good ol low hour motor but I just can’t seem to get it right. I wish I lived close by and could get it to you for your magic touch. Love your channel! I just ordered coils and points set for my 1964 28HP Evinrude. I am getting intermittent spark on my bottom cylinder. Cleaned and set the points and new condenser. reading top coil had 4000 - 5 000 ohms. 1000 to 2000 on the bottom. Throwing parts at it now. Damn thing was running good when I stored it 10 yrs ago
Going down this road right now T Mike. 69 Sportwin top cylinder piston and plug clean, low power, low spark signature on spark tester. Both ohms tests give different readings from plug wire to ground on engine but both have continuity
Wow , In my 61 years I've never seen a points file . Can I send you my motor to fix . Was running fine after setting up for years . Ran for 2 hours trolling at low speed and just quit like it ran out of fuel . Hate to buy a timing and alinement tool just to fix it . Going to pull the fly wheel in the morning and check it out . My question is , is there anyway to eliminate the points all together ? Did that to an old 8N tractor way back in the day but will have to remember what I did just wondering if I can do that to this 6HP engine? Looking at the part price list and the parts are pretty cheap . Think I will just replace all the electrical and put a fresh , water pump in too while I'm at it . Guess I will need the timing tool too if I can find it . Thank you again for the video's . Been telling my friends about them . I live about a mile from a big flood control lake and have a bunch of boating/fishing friends . Always wrenching on something ,lol .
great info.. I rebuilt a 74 6hp Evinrude and something is still amiss. I will take it back from my friend I gave it to and dive in again. I found the rings in Greece and I really replaced all the seals and gaskets. I suspect coils. Thanks again.
Watched two of your video's excellent stuff! Have a cute little 6hp Evinrude twin to rebuild and a 25 e-start ( later model w/ electronic ignition ) that starts, idles, and runs nice....then after a period time seems like it looses spark on one cylinder at low RPMS, but still runs smooth on top.....found your channel and you certainly helped define a direction thru analysis vs.parts swapping :)

I have a similiar problem with mine. I looked in the engine bay and i have the same oily mess in the same place. I think i will get the undertray off tomorrow and investigate. Im sure i have the same issue as it yses loads of diesel

My 1969 Evinrude with new spark plugs has no spark and shows 4k oms on both plug wires. I'll pull off the flywheel and try cleaning the points a second time with a file instead of sand paper. Also my coils have two wires on each point instead of one like yours. Any suggestions?
Hey Mike, here’s one for you. I have 1.5 ohms on both primary windings on cylinder 1 & 2 coils, but I get no ohms on either coil when i test from coil lead to spark plug wire. The kicker, I do have spark on one of those cylinders (tested with spark tester) I’m stumped. Thoughts?

Only problem is someone that didn't know what they were doing took some wires off the engine and all so attempted to rewire the ignition switch ..do you have access to a wiring diagram or a link .thanks again for your videos

Just purchased new OMC coils for 57 Elgin 7.5hp. Coils are giving continuity buzz and 1.5 ohms. But zero reading from any lead to the screw where the wire goes. Assuming bad new coils?
What would cause the magneto backing plate to lock up with the flywheel? Ran perfect for 40 years, one pull starting. Thought the engine seized but its the flywheel locking too the backing plate. Stumped....
@@michaeljsimon breaker cam had cracked all the way through. What would cause the cam to fracture in narrow section? Looks as though the flywheel is running against aluminum on the block near seal around the breaker cam. Is it common for cam to break on old Johnsons?
@@sd410MM I just had the same exact thing happen on my 1974 9.9 Johnson. Woodruff key is fine but flywheel hit Left magneto ear and bent some of the stacked plates down. I thought mine had locked up too.

Go ahead and replace coils points condenser and spark wires - trust me you spark issues will be over.

Tighten your flywheel pullet with impact drill and hit top of puller with biggest hammer you have.

What if the meassurment on the coil reads below 1.5? Is that a bad coil then?

Check the woodruff key on the crankshaft that the flywheel and cam fit on. Might be sheared.

Sure it’s not 6.08 k ohms. That would be 6,000 ohms which is good. Should be between 3k and 10k
