    By far the best review of the teleconverter I've seen - and I've seen them all! It was extremely helpful to have the actual sample images comparing each focal length, and the comparison between the in-camera crop and the TCL was something no one has done yet. Kudos for that!
    Great production quality and your sense of humour is on point. Thanks for this, I think I'll be picking up the TCL sooner than I thought.
    Fuji, get this man a WCL!

      The crop in camera uses less sensor size. So it is logical that the TCL has a better resolution.

    You can also upscale the teleconverter digitally to 75mm-ish. Works fine for subjects without fine detail.

    • @ASkylitDrive89
      @ASkylitDrive89 2 года назад

      Not only that - there are two steps, so with the tcl you actually have the basic 35mm with the regular lens, the 50mm with the teleconverter as well as 72 and 100mm with the teleconverter + the digital converter steps. This by itself is the biggest argument for me to own the tele converter.
      The wcl on the other hand is a nice gimmick.

    For portrait work the most flattering lens was considered the Nikon 105mm and the Leica 90mm. The 35mm / 50mm lens (in 35mm film) exaggerate the nose and facial structure a bit more whereas the 90mm focal length flattens the facial structure just enough to be more pleasing. I think we have gotten used to the wide-angel portrait over the years with the phone cameras as 'normal'. I think if you compare side-by-side head shots and portraits with the 23mm and the extender, you may see critical difference in the pleasing nature of the later. The other option is too shoot the 23mm at a further distance for the head shot and crop to get it tighter, resulting in the same pleasing facial structure. However there is also the depth of field issue for portrait work that the longer lens helps with.

  • @charleskoonu
    @charleskoonu 4 года назад +4

    it will be very useful, because you will have the bokeh of a physical 35mm f2 equivalent and if you shoot raw you will get a native 35mm f2 raw archive, the cropping of the camera only works with Jpg

  • @ThaiRoundhouse
    @ThaiRoundhouse 5 лет назад +7

    An important note for jpeg shooters vs raw shooters. There is still one important difference between the teleconverter and the digital zoom even if they look similar in quality. The digital zoom is jpeg only. You can't shoot in raw and this is the biggest problem for me, not the quality of the image.

      Oh yes that is right! Thanks for mentioning that!

    • @maeglow
      @maeglow 3 года назад

      Note that with the new firmware (2021), you can shot in raw with a tele conversion lens. The crop becomes a metadata, but in the viewfinder you see the crop. So it's now I use every day the crop mode :D

    Hello! Great videos, you keep focus, mix in humor and is informative in a highly effective way. I am choosing between X100F + TCL and X-T20 with 23mmf2+35mmf2. With the TCL, is it still possible to take macro pictures? And does the TCL give slightly more bookeh and compression as a standalone 35mm (50mm) lens?

    I find that the extra weight is not worth it. Digital teleconverter gives me comparable quality (which is quite surprising!) and the only (noticeable) difference is the depth of field. Two big disadvantages for me: weight/bulk, inability to use the OVF which I've grown to like. Albeit, at higher ISO, digital teleconv enlarges the grain, which is not the case with TCL, so might still be worthwhile to those who like to shoot in low light.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад

      Yeah the TCL is bulky and front heavy. That's why I am not using the TCL that much anymore... I never thought about the grain thing! Good point.

    just a request: you showed the comparison between the digital tele and the converter tlc100ii with a landscape picture (and the difference wasn’t so big, but the quality).

    Also you can have the same "field of view" with the crop but not the same angles or compression of field, especially from up close! Would be interesting to see the same test with a portrait for instance. I had the xt1 and did a 23mm vs 56mm comparison with crops and the "feel" of the whole photo was vastly different even though I had the same things in the image. Anyway thanks for the video ;)

  • @FearTheCuteOnes
    @FearTheCuteOnes 6 лет назад +3

    I bought the TCL and WCL lenses with my X100F. If I'm honest, I really love having the option for wider shots with the WCL, but I've barely used the TCL. I think maybe I wouldn't have bought it in hindsight, because if I want a more intimate portrait, I just move closer. I guess it's useful for more candid street photography, but the camera is far less discreet with the TCL on, so it's a little counter-productive.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад +1

      I am all for moving closer for portraits too. I mostly do environmental portraits and for that 35mm is perfect. But I if I ever have to do a headshot the TCL is a big help. I have a feeling that I will like the WCL more than the TCL too If I have it. Size is a big factor... and 28mm is a good focal length to jump into crowded streets :)

    • @pimp2hoes
      @pimp2hoes 6 лет назад

      I love 35mm and it works fine for portraits and some of the background, but you deffnetly want to use the 50mm for portrits close up as you will NOT get the same results just stepping closer,not the same compression, nore will you get the same bokeh...

    thanks for the review. I am about to purchase an X100F over an X-E3 (new to Fuji, new to X...), man that X100F camera looks awesome and iconic! I have a DSLR too with some lenses... Now I know X100F has leaf shutter, HSS, ND,.... but when it comes to focal lenghts more specifically the X-E3 together with a 23 and 18mm...... that choice is hard to make, when I also could consider the X100F and the wide conversion lens for example.. Do you have any comments maybe?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Raf. That's a difficult question... When I bought the X100F (summer 2017) there was no X-E3 around and I originally wanted the X-T20 because I had the chance to play with one when a friend bought it and it was my first Fuji experience and I loved it. I used and still use a Canon 5D with a few lenses and I wanted something small and fun for street photography. When I visited a camera store to see the X-t20 again I found the cam to be too small for a dslr style camera. Then I saw the X100T sitting next to it and I always liked the look of the X100 but in my head I saw limitations because of the fixed lens. But when I hold it in my hands and I played with it immediately felt right to me. I noticed that I really love the rangefinder style of shooting. So I bougth the X100F and I haven't regret it since. With the 28mm & 50mm converter I have anything I need really. But I have to say I love the minimal back design of the X-E3. Not so much a fan of the front though. The lack of a visible viewfinder throws me off a bit. I think if you want the option for fujifilms excellent lenses than go for the X-E3. If you need something compact and beautiful, go for the X100F :) Try both if you can and see what feels right to you. Oh, and AF should be faster on the X-E3! The X100F could feel slow if you come from a DSLR.

    • @rafdegreve
      @rafdegreve 6 лет назад

      thanks for your reaction Samual. Appreciate it. Now the fact is that this X100F is a gorgeous looking camera, and compared to that one, even with some other specs, the X-E3 would again be "a" camera. The X100F would bring me on the street I believe enjoying photo taking...

    • @SamuelStreetlife

      I think you know the answer then. If a camera doesn't inspire you to go out and shoot then why considering it :)

    Thanks for the review, but I'm slight confused by your use of the term "normal". Isn't a "normal" field of view 50mm on a full frame. This lens converts to something like 80mm on this camera, which isn't exactly the textbook definition of "normal" field of view. Am I missing something?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад

      +Joe!!! of Cooking With Joe!!! I was talking about the 50mm fiel of view on full frame as a reference :) the X100F has a APSC size sensor and the native lens is a 23mm wich is equivalent to 35mm on a full frame cam. That means the TCL-X100 is a 35mm on the X100 but has the 50mm full frame field of view. Hope that clarifies it!

    • @Joe-cb8dm
      @Joe-cb8dm 6 лет назад

      Yes, absolutely! I realized I was wrong about what this lens was after I posted. I always thought they had made a 50mm (85mm equivalent) for this camera. I didn't realize that they actually made a 35mm (50mm equivalent). Which begs the question...why? I would think an 85mm equivalent would have been a better addition to the fixed 35mm lens. Seems like 50mm is not enough to warrant a change from 35 to 50 since most shooters in the 35-50 range either prefer 35 OR 50. Still, great review! Thanks for posting!

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад

      I think it's because the targeted market are street photographers. And they usually shoot with 28mm, 35mm and 50mm. And for those who like a single lens camera, but shoot 28mm or 50mm the X100 with the conversion lenses can be a serious buying decision for them. And I don't think a 85mm converter would even possible without any major quality losses. Would be nice though :) But then again, whats the point of wanting a fixed lens camera haha.

  • @richarddelasota1812
    @richarddelasota1812 6 лет назад +3

    I don’t see the point of these. The x100 series of cameras are almost exactly the size of the x-e1, 2 or 3. Why spend $1300 on a fixed lens camera, then hundreds more for converters, when you can spend hundreds less on an x-e2 (for example) and buy the new f2 series of lenses - 23mm, 35mm and 50mm - and have a body the same size as the x100f with the option of just changing lenses - lenses that are more compact than the converters. I had the x100s with both converters, and ultimately kicked myself in the rear for being such a fool, sold the x100 and the converters and went with the x-e2.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад +2

      I can understand your point of view. There are still people out there who really like the X100F's hybrid viewfinder and body design over the X-e2/x-e3 cameras. I think the conversion lenses are just there for the folks who are more comfortable shooting 28mm or 50mm and they will probably leave it on the camera. For me the conversion lenses are just an option for me. I don't really need them. 35mm is all I really need. It is also about limiting yourself (I know this sounds crazy). But some people prefer to have less choice or options down the road. With an interchangeable lens camera system you are more likely to invest in more lenses in the future. It is that simplicity and limitation that I personally appreciate on the X100 system. But good to hear you are happy with the X-e2! At least we have many options to choose from :)

    Great review! For the record, Mk 1 TCL can be converted to Mk 2 for less than a cent and a bit of your time. The connection is magnetic. If you put a normal magnet around the edge of the 23mm lens, you will see that the camera switches to TCL or WCL mode. Other than this magnet, the two versions should be identical.

    I've never understood the point of 50mm being "how the human eye sees." To me, 50mm feels extremely cramped compared to what I see. Is it meant to be with one eye closed? I must be misunderstanding it. I feel like a 28mm is closer to my field of view.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  4 года назад

      Yeah it's more like 40mm. Objects are the same size than in real life when you look through a viewfinder on a 40mm. 28mm might feel closer to reality because our vision is mich wider than the 3:2 aspect ratio of a photograph.

      I was thinking the same and I tested it but I found at normal distance (let's say 2-3 meters / 6-7 foot) the background was not blurrier on the tcl-x100. Maybe creamier? Even with the Teleconverter you are shooting through the 35mm lens so they shouldn't be more shallow depth of field. But when you shoot a headshot for example and you fill the frame with your subject so that on both focal lenghts it is the same size then the Teleconverter will give you less distortion and blurrier background.

      Samuel L. Streetlife Thank you for getting back to me so quickly Sam! The x100F being so unobtrusive with its short lens (and so silent with its leaf shutter) is a main argument against alternatives such as the X-E3 for me. On the other hand the thought that we are not entirely limited to only one focal length with this conversion lens (especially if the X100F is your only camera) is appealing too. Freue mich schon aufs nächste Video, beste Grüße!

    How's the compression/separation between your subject and the background with the TCL. does it mimic DOF of the normal 35 f2?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад +1

      I would say the TCL gives a more compressed look than the 35mm.

    A bit disappointed, I bought the fuji x100f hoping I could basically have it in my pocket, the 50mm feels so huge? Are there rumors on new 50 tele converters on the way that are smaller? Is there a difference in size between the new and old?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад +3

      I haven't heard of rumors about a new Teleconverter. I don't see why Fujifilm would consider making new ones. Yes the 50mm converter is bulky and heavy... But the optical image quality is really good.

    Great review and video!
    I know it might sound crazy but..is it possible to use the TCL in combination with the in camera digital zoom? So that you can have sort of 100 and 120 mm..sort of :)
    Thanx!

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  6 лет назад

      Yes that is possible! I never tried it but I know that some people use the teleconverter in combination with the digital zoom. I don't like the digital zoom because I can always crop if I need more range.

      In my experience their is no real difference in Bokeh. Only if you do close ups. But I haven't test it yet.

    i am wondering about this camera, really. I am a a7R3 shooter, 35 1.4and 85 1.8 batis, along with mc11 - sigma 24 1.4, canon 50 1.8 stm and 70-200 f4 no is. I do weddings and corporate events.
    I would like to have something small, that i can be all the time with, that might be mine B cam(so far it is a t3i), and to be fun to shoot with. I've been offered to buy second hand x100f for 800$ and.. my choise aint easy. Keeping in mind x-e3/xt20 (different options for lenses) and ricoh gr3 as fixed lens camera too. Also i want to have fun and not overpay. Also this year i think i will offer a video production services too. Hm. Help.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  5 лет назад

      What is your primal usage for a B-cam? If it's video then don't even think about the X100F. But if it is photography and wanting to have a fun time then I cannot recommend the X100F enough. If you only know DSLR's you will fall in love with the manual controls and dials on the X100F. The X-e3 and XT-20 are great cameras and also fun to use but the X100 line is something special. If you can I would advise you to at least try a X100 out to see how you like it. I wanted a XT-20 first and went to a store to try it out. But I played with a X100T and a week later I bought the X100F. 800$ is a great price too! That is almost half of a new one!

    Sorry, but it does matter what you put in front of the lens, if you shoot through a rubbish cheap filter you are changing the front end element to rubbish, not a good statement to make, no longer the sleek and sexy camera, just big and ugly.
