Fuji X100F In Havana - The Perfect Street Camera?

  • I spent a week shooting street in Havana with the new Fuji X100F and I can tell you this camera gets a lot right! 24 MP XTrans 3 sensor, improved EVF/OVF, revised ergonomics and interface, Higher capacity NP126 battery... The list goes on. But in spite of all the improvements, the X100F still feels like an old friend. An old friend with INCREDIBLE IMAGE QUALITY!
    I put the camera to the test over 8 days of shooting in Havana. Plenty of sample pics in the video and you can see full size samples in the written review over on StreetShootr.com. This is the ultimate X100 and is the camera a lot of street guys have been waiting for.
    You can order the Fuji X100F online at B&H: goo.gl/3rmLgi
    And on Amazon: geni.us/JwPq
    This is the ultimate X100 and a great all around street photography camera. Check the review and let me know what you think in the comments!!
    Full size sample images can be seen in the written review on StreetShootr - www.streetshootr.com/fuji-x100...
    Video notes:
    The strap is by Gordys - dark brown leather with black wrapping and integrated strap bumpers.
    The thumbgrip is a Lensmate X100T version. They haven't completed their X100F version yet but this one still works (but partially covers the AF and AE lock buttons). Still worked great though!
    The soft release is by Match Technical. Fuji now uses "short" threads on their shutter buttons like the Leica M240. If you're shopping for a a release look for a short version or it will keep falling out all over the place!
    This video was shot entirely in 4K with the Fuji XT20 camera.

    Your advice about turning the front button into the AE/Af button was really great, so simple and so fast to use. The button is right where your finger rests naturally as you hold the camera. It has changed my street shooting into a real pleasure, one less thing to not have to think about or hunt around for. Thanks so much.

    Just wanted to pop by and say that I love your videos and your personality! You're great to watch and really funny and authentic. :) And your street photos are simply stunning.
    I'm dying to get this camera, but am hesitant about the autofocus, as I'm a fast DSLR run and gun shooter. All my previous pocket cameras I ended up not using much, because they're just too slow for me for improvised street action. I'd love to have this camera, but I worry that the same thing will happen to me again.
    Thanks for the great video!

      What exactly is beautiful about Havana? Unless now poverty, suppression of people, and super old unpainted cracked buildings, and cars from 1950's with engine parts from washing machines is now considered beautiful?...I am Cuban-American, and I amazed at this stupidity. The only thing Cuba has left that is picture worthy are SOME of it's beaches and that is about it. Downtown Havana looks like it was bombarded in World War II.

    Great video, loved your honesty. I've ordered this camera roday, 7 Jan 2018, I already own the XT1 and the X70, but I've heard so much about the x100f I decided to bite the bullet and get one, I used to own the x100s but the autofocus just killed me. As for Havana been there a few times myself, great safe place to go, get the odd Knob Head, but compared to most major city's it's a safe friendly place to visit.

      BlueZ the auto focus is spot on. If had no problems with it. My old X100s was a nightmare at auto focus and I kept hold of it for longer than I should only because the photos where so good and it looked smart Lol. Whereas the X100F is BANG on and the photos are JUST FANTASTIC. I added a few to one of me RUclips videos, says sol palmeros video and photos "video was with a Gopro", but all the photos at the end where jpeg from the X100F

    • @Dangerousdaze
      @Dangerousdaze 6 лет назад +4

      I can see why some people hate the new ISO dial and why Fuji added the dial option, but I still think it needs to be there to complete the design vision, allowing you to see all the exposure settings at a glance without needing to switch the camera on. You also have the ability to choose a custom/auto setting and sacrifice that ability, but one thing I really like is that if a dial says a number, IT IS THAT NUMBER! It never overrides a “real” setting with something commanded from a dial.

      Havana is the kind of place where you can just wander and let the world reveal itself to you. My only tips would be to pay attention to the light and stay away from the tourist areas. Head out into the real Havana and wander like Daido's stray dog... Let your instincts guide you to new and interesting situations.

    • @fraenkiboii
      @fraenkiboii 7 лет назад

      You were absolutely right! At the first day, I was a little shocked by the "craziness" of Havana, but then I came back and enjoyed it very much! With the light, it can really get difficult, especially during noon, where the sun hits hard.

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  7 лет назад

      The light was amazing! I didn't have much problem at noon - sort of trained myself to shoot on the shady side of the street when it's lunch time :)
      We typically took a break for a couple hours around 12 and got lunch or went back to the apartment to rest up a bit. Then headed back out around 2 which gave us plenty of time to walk to our afternoon destinations in time for the afternoon light!

    Great shots, great video! You never mentioned the leaf shutter, and I was wondering how important that was to you for high speed sync fill flash outdoors. I have 2 x-e2s's (I couldn't pass up on a $499 price for second body) with 35 f2, 18-55, 27, 54-200, and 10-24, but I also still have a Nikon D7100 and an a6000 with both kits and Zeiss 16-70 (underwhelming in my opinion). I think of the a6000 as my 24MP mirrorless. I'm very interested in x100F rather than buying the 23 f2 lens, for the leaf and as you show in the video, the beautiful pairing of the old lens, new sensor and the almost dreamlike 3 dimensional quality of images, which you proved with your photos. I think though most importantly, for the leaf shutter. How often do you find the need for the high speed flash sync? I need to get rid of some of these non-Fujis.

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  7 лет назад +2

      I really only covered the new features of the X100F. The leaf shutter has been used since the original X100 in 2011 so I didn't think there was much point to go over that again.
      The leaf shutter is fine. I don't shoot that much flash so that's not so important to me. But it does let you flash sync up to about 1/2000 second without issue. It's also super quiet.
      K.

    • @tomditmar1083
      @tomditmar1083 7 лет назад

      Street Shootr Thank you, and yes you are right! Poorly worded as there are really many other reason to buy over all the older variations of the x100 series. I guess more to the point was how important you thought that feature was in general, just given it is something I hadn't considered much before but saw some beautiful daytime action shots in sunlight using the high speed flash sync in another article. I was curious how often, if ever you used out on the street, which you answered. You're shots are fantastic! Thanks again for your reply.

      Carlos Alfronos C. A true manual focus lens has the focus ring directly coupled to the elements it moves. Modern af lenses are "fly by wire" and introduce a measure of lag as a result.

    coming from an xt10 with the 35mm f2 lens, are you finding the x100f lens to be soft wide open/close up?

    cheers :)

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Nathan,
      All my thoughts on the camera are pretty much outlined in the video. I haven't picked up a copy for myself just yet so I don't have much more to say on it. As for the lens, all I can say is I'm a street guy. So shooting wide open at close distances really doesn't come up for me that often (if at all!)
      I can say that this lens has been in use since hte original X100 was released. People definitely have opinions on its quality and this topic has come up more than once. Really no lens is perfect for everything. It's a matter of determing how you shoot and getting the most of whatever lens you happen to have.
      You may be spoiled coming from the 35mm f/2 though - that lens has a fair share of its own magic going on! :)
      K.

    I actually really don't mind the iso dial on the x pro. Certainly not as easy as the x t2 but you do get used to lifting and turning while looking through the viewfinder.
    I had a Fujica st605n in the late 70s and that had a similar function.

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  7 лет назад

      Hi Steven,
      Like I said, there's no shortage of people who "don't mind" the ISO dial. Or who think it's "okay". But overall just about everyone would rather it was something else. This being said, it's not enough to turn me off of Fuji's products.
      They are definitely pushign the boundaries of usability with the super small dial on the X100F though. The ability to use the front dial to change ISO came in handy more than once!
      But all in all, it's a great little camera!

    • @mavfan1

    im worried about one thing: the fixed lens . just saying if something bad happens to the lens like scratches or you drop and the lens crack on the metal bends its pretty much over no? tell me your oppinion since you use it

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  5 лет назад

      Just because a fixed lens camera breaks doesn't mean it's beyond repair. I generally put a clear filter on the lens to protect the front element from scratches and call it a day. If the damage is so bad that the entire camera is a write off then you'd probably have done the same amount of damage to a camera with an interchangeable lens attached. 6 of one half a dozen of the other...

  • @nikolaus2688

    Actually, having the ISO dial within the shutter speed dial IS the best system you can have if you learned with largely manual cameras (when "A" mode was cutting edge)
    All my old analogue cameras have it, and once you've gotten the hang of it, it's beyond brilliant, because you can change all your settings by touch and counting clicks.
    BTW, the option to skip an intro doesn't acknowledge that nobody likes it, but that some people might not. And as always, now that we finally got a digital camera with all the classic dials and aperture rings, the disappearance of which we have been lamenting for decades (they started to disappear before DSLRs were really a thing), of course some people have got to come along and say "get rid of them".
    Frankly, f you want the specs of the x100f but can do without the classic handling, you can get any number of cameras and save yourself a couple hundred bucks in the process. Being able to handle the thing blindly, the way I handle my film cameras, after a while, is pretty much the only sane (ish) reason to shell out semi-serious DSLR money for a fixed prime compact with 24 MP.

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  5 лет назад

      I've been shooting for over 30 years and have a B.A.A. in photography from Ryerson University in Toronto. I learned to shoot on all manual film cameras and only a handful of those cameras have had the ISO dial integrated into the shutter dial.
      It was an acceptable comprimise in the film days when you'd only change the ISO value when you changed your film stock but modern digital photography means we're often adjusting ISO shot to shot. A more nimble solution like the one on the X-T2 or even the venerable Leica M10 is certainly a better choice.
      Does the integrated ISO dial work? Yes. But it's far from a perfect solution.
      As it turns out, this isn't enough to turn me away from the Fuji X100F (or X-Pro2). Both are excellent cameras in spite of this one "feature". ;)

    Just watched your XPro2 video before watching this video and have a dilemma. I have a XT10 but just prefer the handling of the Fuji Rangefinder style. I like to do some landscape and have some cool vintage manual lens as well as the XF 18-55 which I think is pretty good. But my love is traveling with my charity to take portraiture of local people. The XPro2 looks perfect especially as you mentioned pairing it with the 35mm f2. So... I’m not sure to go XPro1 to dabble with my manual lens as I don’t need AF for landscape and get a X100F for travel and portraiture and have the ability to travel light or just go XPro2 to do Landscape and travel.
