Thanks for the tip about curbing your enthusiastic nose breathing. Awesome video.

Thank you so much for sharing this technique, something I’ve never seen or heard of before but am excited to start including this breathing into my daily routine. Appreciate your concise, easy to understand presentation of this and will make sure to save this video!

I've seen the studies, but it might be helpful to other viewers to post a link to the review article by Craighead et al in July 2022 Exercise & Sports Science Reviews 'Translational Potential of High-Resistance Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training'. What I found particularly interesting is that although aerobic exercise training does not improve endothelial function in postmenopausal women not on HRT, IMST does. Many women forgo HRT due to concerns over breast cancer (which may be unfounded for estrogen-only topical HRT) - so IMST would be of great benefit in this group. There are also devices for IMST which could be helpful in some cases - though some seem overpriced.

I don't believe you need to pinch off a nostril, just deep breath in through the nose, you can restrict your nose to absorb more oxygen. An incentive spirometer is another tool you can use to strengthen your lungs. With this method he's doing here, you have to breath in and out a lot more aggressive if you really want to feel the effects of nitric oxide in your blood stream to widen your arteries and lower your blood pressure, you need at least 30 deep breaths and if you can hold on the top of each one for a few seconds even better, then measure your bp, your systolic will take a dive and the diastolic not so much, but over time your base line bp will be lower.

It helps down regulate the vagus nerve signals of fight or flight, reducing anxiety. Pranayama yoga is a lot of this & quite helpful for intention and focus. Best to you🤙🏻

I learned to meditate and simultaneously extend my outgoing breath. When done together, I found that I could get farther out of my body. Breathing exercises are incredible! I was beginning to get high blood pressure but I found out how to control it with breathing and meditation.

Hey dr. Peter Goertz, really love your videos, much appreciated :) One question : Is it better to perform this exercise before or after my workout?

I don’t know the answer to your question. If you do this after exercising, it seems wise to wait until your heart rate and breathing are back to baseline.

Are you aware that for most of the video your hands entirely block how you are pinching your nose? I would be more helpful if you did another video showing how you restrict the airflow into your nasal passages. Thank you.

Thanks. Never seen this one. Only seen vagud nerve reset when you restrict outbreath. I will do this instead and rest vagus nerve different way.

You might benefit even more if you close your mouth and use the nose for breathing both in and out. You need resistens on your out breath to prolong the exhale. Which will support your and big time.

    • @Dudu98

@goertzpsychiatry Thanks for the response doc! It would be interesting to see more doctors making videos about the impact of ENS, be it physiological or psychological. I believe this disease doesn't get enough recognition and thus treatment options are very limited. I have read some studies that were showing how ENS patients tend to have lower NO levels compared to normal people and that was a cause of depression. I know this would be a big ask, but would you be open to make a video about ENS in the future?

@@Dudu98 This sounds interesting. However at this point I don’t know much about ENS.
