  • Our baby goats are getting BIG and it's time to begin the weaning process. Our family will begin drinking half of the milk from our momma goat by separating the baby goats from the momma overnight. But first, we need to build a house for the momma goat and find a way to keep the baby goats in the barn.

    Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
    We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

    I don't think anyone watched you build that shelter. We were all watching those baby goats! So cute!

    Long time watcher - first time poster. Your daily videos make me smile - this is my favorite video to date - the babies running, jumping and wanting you to pick them up - how fun! Now I want a goat!

    Cute babies! I hope they adjust well to overnight separation. We do that too when we need more milk. Although many people wean at 8 weeks in order to sell quick, Goats do a lot better with long term health if you wait to wean till 12 weeks old. Just a peaceful bit of expert advice! I like that your shelter is free material and transportable if you need to move it. Great teamwork!

      Hey, I know this comment is 2 years old but if you happen to see my reply I'm curious about your weaning schedule. I agree that the kids should have access to mama for 3 months... I'm planning to start kid sharing (kids off at night, on during the day) at 6-8 weeks and not wean completely until 12+ weeks... What do you think?

    • @WholesomeRoots
      @WholesomeRoots 3 года назад +1

      @@RewiredforJoy we don't wean at all with does we are keeping. With buckling we separate at 3 months old. Three days of screaming baby goats and momma's and then they settle down

    You will eventually find goats on top of the structure! They inevitably find ways to get up as high as possible! You can get those giant spools from an electric company for free which make great playground equipment. I have piles of large rocks and large tree trunks around for them to climb.....those babies are so fun!!!

    We started separating and milking when babies reached 20lb which was about 7-8 weeks old. Mama doesn’t like being milked but we are more stubborn than she is. We have to hobble her and she isn’t quite as resistant but still hates it. We get close to about 2 1/2 -3 cups a day which is well over a gallon a week for my husband and I. We plan on keeping our diesel so we won’t wean them. Mama will when she wants. We have to be much more “secure” because of our predators.

    Pallets are so versatile! And we rarely throw out sheet metal either because it’s so versatile also. You can sure see why baby goats are called kids! There’s so much that can be recycled that we try to give a second (or 3rd or 4th) life to! Cheaper too! Blessings y’all!

    I have always just used a large metal dog crate or sectioned off a part of a stall with scrap wood and fencing to keep them separate but near each other. That way there is no stress (especially on mom) so it doesn’t effect her milk supply and quality.
    Just a thought.
    I am eager to see how this goes for you.
    Oh and I always separate at night at 2 weeks to reduce stress as well.
    😃

    Long fence staples make good hinges. I love pallets also. I used them to make stalls with a board over it to hold hay bales.

    Love to build with pallets. I have a double side compost bins and a hay & feed shed for the livestock. One side has two shelves for 5 gal. fed buckets.

    As we keep adding animals to our homestead, you have a video for us! Thanks! We are beginning creep feeding our 8 baby goats and hope to wean them off at at least 7 weeks...hope to sell around 8 weeks...but they are already nibbling on mom's feed and tasting grass and hay...first chickens, then rabbits, meat rabbits...now goats

    What would happen if you had a seesaw out there for those goats? A couple ramps to either side of the top of that little enclosure would keep them(and you) amused. Beautiful birdsong, btw

    Good job., what about a palet on the ground if it rains hard .,to put some hay ?..for the mother...well for the hot weather i think that under that tin ,,she is going to fry.,needs shadow of a tree or something ..,

      @LivingTraditionsHomestead  6 лет назад +4

      She will only use that at night (for 2 weeks until the babies go to their new home). During the day, she will have access to the barn where we keep the hay and where they hang out most of the day. Yes, we will put hay in there for her to snuggle in to. It actually doesn't get that hot under there. We use the same type of structure for our pigs and other goats.

    On the right side of the screen as the video starts I see the large white blooms of Queen Ann's Lace. Do you use that plant for anything ? It spreads like crazy , is hard to kill, and takes over pastures because cows won't eat it.
