That's probably the best song I've ever heard. I play it very rarely just to treasure it and eliminate the risk of overplaying it. The fireworks at the end are just incredible. Nothing can match the feels I get there at the end. How can something be so fucking good and at the same time not very well known.
Right. But Radioactive Toy, Anesthetize, The Raven and so on and on. I will be on my first gig in July. I wish the fans in India, you will see Steven too.
PT is without a doubt the PF of this generation. This is an absolute masterpiece. I stumbled upon them last year after searching trains on you tube and have since become a huge fan ever since. Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Tool have always been my favorite bands, but I'm slowly beginning to think that PT may knock one of them out of my top three
This song feels cold, dark, ecstatic and beyond.. I have never been to Russia, but this piece made me feel like I was in a forest, in winter, haunted and beautiful ❤️
This is actually a "Russia" reference to vodka. This song is about excesses of alcohol abuse, not about the country. I am glad I found this gem after seeing Porcupine Tree mentioned as another prog band Gavin Harrison had played with (in addition to King Crimson). Beautiful! I will be listening to more Porcupine Tree!
Thing is, if you didn’t know, Gavin isn’t playing on this song. He joined the band later in 2002, so this is his predecessor Chris Maitland playing drums.
When I first heard it in 2000 at the age of 21 I had turned up the music so loud on my car stereo that I had burned out the speakers. It cost me. I will never forget it
Such an amazing song. I’ve been listening to them for at least 6 months, if not nearly a year, and have just recently stumbled upon this song. One of my favorites. It’s mellow and manages to make life okay. Such a timeless piece and I know it is a song that will never get old to me.
I will never forget how my best friend & I felt when we listened to this song during our first edible-induced trip. It was on that day we decided to attend PT's concert, whenever it happens. Roughly 1 year later, we both flew half the world across, from India to Amsterdam, to watch PT perform on November 7th, 2022.
In my opinion is one of the best of Porcupine Tree... is such deep and emotional, but you need to listen it more times for truly understand this masterpiece. The lyrics are so dark and criptic, but if you know the meanings of these, the entire structure of the music follow perfectly the moment described in the lyrics. And i love when i need to reflect to comprend truly a song, and in this Steven Wilson is a genius
+SheIsntReal94 In the beginning the lyrics start with a dark thought : "You think i deserve this? You said i was stupid" and introduce us to a man that is suffering for someone (probably his girl), all with a slow intro that is perfect to the crescendo of the song, that slowly progress symmetrical to the "thoughts" that the "man" is feeling. After he sayed "all my thoughts are like coal", and that's a metaphor, because like the coal, the thoughts are propellant for the flame of Pain in this case, the pain that he is suffering, and this pain is only "removed" by drinking alchol, and we know that by "But Russia on ice is burning a hole"the most metaphorical phrase in the song, infact the meaning is deep and ermetic: The "russia on ice" is a metaphor for Vodka - Alchol, that is burning the Throath ("a hole"), so he is drunking because he doesn't want to think. This phrase will be repeated all the times at the end of a strophe, and the meaning is that the only solution for solve the problems that he had is drinking and drinking, and this is clearly explained at the beggining of the next strophe "Can't stop myself drinking". After that he sayed "can't stop being me, if i call will you come and will you save me?", and this is explained the problem that he had with her girl, she doesn't like him anymore for what he became, and he is thinking that she even would not help him if he call for help. Then the music kick and start to have a significant crescendo, with the dark chorus "I see the whole thing come down, i burn it to the ground, well what the hell did you say?You said you hate me this wait, it's just a matter of time", the crescendo is symmetrical to the wrath that start to grows in he, when he is drunk at the ground, angry for the bad words that he received. But after that the music calms down again, because the sadness keep his thoughts, and the next strophe is the real deep end:"A drop in the ocean, a significant motion, nothing melts in this cold, but Russia on ice is burning a hole". That for me had 2 meanings, the first, that the "drop in the ocean" represent how a little thing can really hurt a man inside ( a single drop cause a significant motion in the sea), and that he is so "cold" inside now that he can't feel anything (nothing melts in this cold) and he turn back again at drinking alchol (russia on ice...). The second meaning is much darker and depressing, infact, the "drop in the ocean" could be a metaphor for his body (the drop) that fall in the ocean...he is commiting suicide in the water, and that's the real significant motion, the last motion of his body, and in the cold of the water any "burning thoughts" that melt his soul will be ended, and again the last reference to his alchol addiction that caused his death. In any case, both will end with his death for me "it's just a matter of time" and i can speculate that by the change of the music after that phrase. Infact the heavy riff for me rapresent his last thoughts of anger in the cold water or at the ground drunk, because the alchol make his effect and he is covered in rage, but after all that heavy and dark armony the music calm down suddendly, and a bell start to ring...like a bell of death, like the bell that plays at a funeral...he is dying, and finally all the bad thoughts are vanishing with the silence and peace of the death... That's my interpretation...was really long to write, hope this will help someone to understand more this masterpiece, and sorry for my bad english...hope this is legible!

Steven Wilson the most prolific, brilliant writer of music. I probably have like 30-40+ fav songs by him :) Can't say that about any other artist, nope.
This was initially a very difficult song for me. It just seemed sort of dragged and uneventful, with nothing special going on. A few weeks later, I'm totally addicted to this. 13 minutes? I want more!
Such a great song. Porcupine Tree is on a particular with Floyd. Total quality thru and thru. A large portion of the music on the radio is souless uncreative crap!! They learn a lot from Steven Wilson and prog in general
The Absentia Tour about 15yrs ago at "The House of Blues" in Hollywood California, PT played this!....After learning the sound system there, was purchased from The Rolling Stones, this particular tune shook the Hell out of the building! That mini yawning sound/arrangement of steven at 3:36 just proves how soothing this song is
The first part of this song is very pink floyd. The second half of the song is very tool/dream theater.
Best of both worlds I must say.
How did I miss this song from PT? Shame on me!
+Audioholics i was thinking the exact same thing!
same here ...:3
+Audioholics do listen to drive home if you haven't already!
unless you dont want to cry... that song endlessly fucks me up. which is rare & fantastic
shame on you
Amazing! A trip to the unknown depths.
Steven Wilson the most prolific, brilliant writer of music. I probably have like 30-40+ fav songs by him :) Can't say that about any other artist, nope.
Steven Wilson rules an unknown Kingdom.... and for all those sad thumbs down; please forgive, they really haven't got a clue...
Indeed
This was initially a very difficult song for me. It just seemed sort of dragged and uneventful, with nothing special going on. A few weeks later, I'm totally addicted to this. 13 minutes? I want more!
try radiohead "i promise"
Such a great song. Porcupine Tree is on a particular with Floyd. Total quality thru and thru. A large portion of the music on the radio is souless uncreative crap!!
They learn a lot from Steven Wilson and prog in general
Keith Mcmahon yeah it reminded me of Floyd
Really, which bit? Honestly curious... I mean maybe a bit of late Waters era but... I dunno
@@kida4313 if you listen more songs, you will notice. it's defenitly there...
@@Peter_B I've listened to alot, live and on recordings, and I reall don't hear Floyd in Russia on Ice.
man you just need pink floyd, steve wilson and Radiohead to live your life and be awake to the fullest
Amazzzzing art 🌹. This band is a tie between Pink Floyd and Radiohead. Beautiful
Since 80s PT has brought up with many psychedelic Masterpieces. But this one is exceptional. Also love 'Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape'.
The Absentia Tour about 15yrs ago at "The House of Blues" in Hollywood California, PT played this!....After learning the sound system there, was purchased from The Rolling Stones, this particular tune shook the Hell out of the building! Too Opeth and many PT fan's,It felt like a good size earthquake!.....LoL
Muy buena rola, ¡wow!, gracias Toño Salcedo por compartir
It could be the most moving PT song. Simply.
+Joan Silentio heard drive home? i like it equally!
Tanmay Setia Yeah, it is an amazing, moving song. Have you seen Steven live?
Never! Hoping that happens soon.
+Tanmay Setia Drive home isn't from PT.
+SlaveCalledShiver I am aware that it's an independent SW project.
This is a true masterpiece
again, one in an endless beautiful vein from Wilson and co.; extremely personal and yet universal....
I recently got to know Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson. I have now 5 albums. This is brilliant!
I really REALLY love the ending of this song...that drumming.
2018... Russia is still on ice.. Amazing

Thursday, 24 November 2022 it's raining outside and hearing this song gives me goosebumps.
Its gold yes ❤ being a huge PT fan i expect such songs but the transition after 7:30 still leaves me amazed 🤯 brains out. What a piece 👌👌
Listening to this during the dawn of WW3. February, 28th 2022. Love from NZ.
I hope war in Ukraine will end as fast as it started
wish SW would revive this song for the live set lists
best porcupine tree song for me, ever!
At 6:48, I can feel my soul prep up to float with the music after.
just listened to this after having not played it for a couple of years - bloody tears streaming down my cheeks - wtf - blubbering like a bloody baby
amazing how it is so similar to floyd yet so unique and on point! just truly magnificent!
So psychedelic but in a good way. Enjoying this while staring at the stars
This was next in the queue after Tool what a masterpiece.
Can't get over the bass on this track! ❤️ And I am a guitar player. 😅

意味が何ですか
This song hits home. Drinking vodka, working swing shift and feeling sorry for myself.
Open petition to put more prog bands as lead soundtrack for movies? This track just brings James Bond vibes every damn time!!!!
