Do people even know the existence of this song? So beautiful yet so underrated. One of their best songs, if not the best. And one of my personal favorites.
The starting and the end music of this song just melt my heart.when i listen this song first time i felt like i am surrounded by the most beautiful things. there is something in this song that i cant help myself to listen to again n again, so deep, mesmerizing and musical . one of the best song of PT.
"Here's a hymn for those that disappear." I've heard this song over and over, and this line gets me every time. There are so many ways these days for people to disappear. Most of us have already disappeared, under a media onslaught and a mountain of internet information. So many people sitting alone in darkened rooms, not knowing quite what to do, just waiting futilely to be discovered. In my opinion, 'Buying New Soul' was written as an anthem to all those millions of people who will never get their fifteen minutes of fame.
Here's a story... It reminds me of myself. I had began a small musical project since I was 18, but time, money, and other burdens obstruct me to finish it. Even I have join a small team of indie filmmaker as a soundtrack composer/sound designer, and also worked as a creative directive in an advertisement agency, I still cannot finish my own personal project. Because of the political climate in my country is highly unstable, my indie film team were disbanded, an ad-agency were closed because it couldn't maintain the revenue, I decided to work in the military. And because my country is not a "social-welfare" state, I had to work in the military as the governmental job is the only way you can get the stable income and welfare [maybe you could guess now which country I'm living in...] I'm 30 now, looking back at the photo when I was happily joining my rock band in high-school, in campus, working on site with my film dept, etc. Maybe I can release the little first album, in a little bandcamp page, when I'm 31, before I started to disappear again. I just wish I have enough time to finish that... . . . "I'm [We're] a shade and easy to ignore..."

My favorite lyric: White wall, I had to paint a door I always find that I've been through it before Close it up and throw away the key Break the code, how happy I could be
himanshu rathore Here is What I think it means. I could be totally wrong, but given the context of the rest of the song it fits. He is saying that he can’t accept the way things are. When everybody else see a white wall, he has to paint a door. He discovers what he’s looking for is not there and he realizes that he has done this before. He can’t help doing it, it’s an obsession. He tells himself if could just stop he could be happy. But he still going to beat his head against the wall and wave to the dots on the shore, even though he is hopelessly far from shore and is doomed to drown, to fail. He ends by saying he is going to buy a soul, seek some sort of redemption, but he ultimately acknowledges that he and those that try this will ultimately fail, as the world goes on with out them oblivious to their existence. They simply disappear.
@@cadredeux1047 That's scary and beautiful at the same time. I and my friends were high once and this was our go to song... One of my friends had not consumed anything did a strange thing when this lyrics came up. He just waved at us while pushed himself back while on the chair. For three of us who sat on the other side it suddenly striked that we all we leaving the normal world and actually we were discussing something very deapths of the meaning of life etc. We felt we were off the shore of normal people and we still waved our hands to those people on the shore including that one sober friend of ours. So yeah I could relate, though we were not drowning we felt we were on a boat and leaving this world for a moment.
Monk 994 The waving to the dots on the shore seems to be from the short story written by Stephen Crane called the boat, which was based on a real life experienced where Crane was forced into a life boat after his ship was sunk of the Florida coast. The ship floundered of the Fla coast for days despite seeing people, that appeared as dots on the shore, not responding to them. They came into Daytona beach but not before the boat capsized and one man drowned. Of course I am assuming the connection and have no verification. I also heard the reference in the show Madmen, where a woman who had terminal cancer says “I still wave to the dots on the shore”
Thank you for this. Saw Steven at RAH 2018 and 2016. Totally blown away by everything he does with some of the best musicians around. This is the most beautiful calming song I have ever heard.
Today, I woke up to get ready for school. Walked to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and while I was doing so a close friend of mine told me to immediately skype her, so I did. She had a devastated look on her face. She told me one of our friends committed suicide, and was found last night, and we both started crying. At first I went back to bed and started crying with my face against the pillow as if I was trying to hide my tears from everything. Then I went to school, all of our teachers were crying, we didn't go to any classes and just stayed in the library and cried our eyes out the entire day. We saw the toughest of our teachers with eyes red from shedding tears. We made our friend's family a memorial card with sketches of things that he liked. And now I'm home in bed, thinking this is all just a dream, insisting that the fact that no one will ever see his face again isn't real. This is the song I am listening to while I do so, because it makes death seem as beautiful as it can.
I hope you are feeling better as of today, and I wanna hug you super hard right now, I can’t imagine what you are going through, although I lost my father a 12 years ago, and all I can tell you is to keep your head up it will get better in time, and whenever you are feeling low just throw some Porcupine Tree into your headphones and it will be just that little bit more bearable. Best of luck buddy!

This is their absolute best. When I first heard it in 2002 I thought it was their best and I still think it is ~ this piece is a gem ~
Another great song from a band that must get back together to enlighten another generation, PLEASE.
That melody at the start will haunt me for life 😅
If you don't have a broken heart ,you don't understood this great song ;-)
10 minutes of absolute redemption .. I don't know from what.. beautiful piece ..
Fantastic.
I know it not to be the lyric, but i always hear, I'm Ashamed, and uneasy to adore. both apply.
I have to admit that when i first heard this track I thought it was "I'm ashamed, and easy to ignore".....which also kind of applies....
When I first heard it, I heard "I still wave at the ducks on the shore ..."
I would not be surprised if that would've been the lyrics. Remember the lyrics in Stranger by the Minute: "Under floorboards, it's hard to fly a kite"
I say that when I sing along. Because I’d wave at ducks, probably not people. Best PT song.
It’s like coming home, I wouldn’t change a thing ❤️
love...
Wish you all the best!
I'm a shade and easy to ignore.
My whole life in a simple sentence...
Love the live version as well. Just has this great atmosphere and mystique
Perfection. Nothing more to say!
I'm so sorry! I hope I can give you a hug, I hope things will be better for you.
Sorry to here this :( Hope you feel better now.
Thanks guys, I'm doing a lot better now
António Gonzalez sorry about your father, it must have been incredibly tough... but time heals everything
