    I heard this song for the first time on an internet radio station called aural moon about 10 years ago. The song impressed me so much I bought the In Absentia album in a heartbeat. Ended up buying all the Porcupine Tree albums and that of his "solo" career. Steven Wilson and those involved in his projects makes the kind of music that I searched for all my life. I do listen to other bands. But with Steven you are guaranteed quality material. This song will always be a favorite of mine. Because it introduced me to true musicianship.

      and Aural Moon continues to play the best music...I fell in love with Porcupine Tree before i really knew who they were, and the genius that is Steven Wilson continues to play my mind all the time...indeed Gravity Eyelids is fluidity perfection, touches all the right things...

    Open your eyes now
    Hear me out before I lose my mind
    I've been waiting for hours
    Let the salt flow, feel my coil unwind
    Give me a smile please
    Count the calm and watch my breathing slow
    Winding me up tease
    Get inside my head and make it show
    Gravity eyelids come down
    Touching your oil skin
    Slipping hands down past your waist to find
    I've been waiting for hours
    Let the salt flow, feel my coil unwind
    Go to the edge swim
    Brown the eyes that sleep has rendered blind
    Gravity eyelids come down
    Come love so young with your gold arms so I wake her
    Here's a will that will glow in the dark

    This song threw me for a loop when I first listened to In Absentia. I knew to expect creepiness, but the ethereal choir, shuffling sounds and distorted piano created a sense of dread that I haven't experienced from any other piece of music before or since.

    That Star-Wars-like keyboarding at 5:06-5:12 is just pure genius.
    I think it's never easy to exploit mere electronic soundings into such a beautiful melody. Kudos to Richard Barbieri, kudos to Steven Wilson and whomever had a hand in the song's composition.

    • @strattubes
      @strattubes 4 года назад +3

      Richard is uniquely talented at creating ambiance in a song. He is one of the most patient keyboard players I've ever heard. A very nice guy too, he and the rest of PT spent way too much of their time, after a gig at like 3 am, talking to some friends and I. He even graciously allowed my keyboard player to give him a hug. lol

    Okay, so bear with me here. To me, this song is from the perspective of a potentially sadistic abductor. He has drugged a woman that he's taken captive, and she's starting to come around. The way the song builds is like her returning to consciousness. His lyrics indicate this as well. When she realizes where she is and what's happening, she sort of swoons back into semi-consciousness, but by this point he's touching her (those staccato guitar riffs and drum hits). And then when it gets heavy, he's doing what he wanted all along. The rising noise, the repeating cadences, are essentially her mind fragmenting as she is assaulted.
    I very obviously don't wish this on anyone, and I have no idea what the band was thinking when they wrote the song. But this is how it plays to me. it's deep, it's dark, and it's both sensual and violent.

    • @MadCritter
      @MadCritter Год назад

      No mate, that’s pretty spot on. Whole album has themes of rape (this one), necro (lips of ashes), and serial killers/ torture in general (blackest eyes, strip the soul, the creator had a mastertape). The rest of the tracks are more or less unrelated. The 2020 In Absentia documentary which is available for free on RUclips is great and definitely worth a watch.
