Dude the bass in these songs is just soooo groooovy, not enough people are talking about the great basslines and bass tones present in this bands albums and live shows. Colin Edwin grooooovin
When I was introduced to Dream Theater in 1996 I was hook line and sinker. When Mike Portnoy nominated In Absentia as BEST Prog Rock album for 2004 I found my NEW favorite band and it's been Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson ever since
Yes, man! Steven Wilson is a genius. I am just waiting for the day that he comes to Canada so I can see their solos and some PT songs. Have you listened to The Pineapple Thief? It's very good, and their drummer (Gavin Harrison) is the same as PT's. If you want to explore an album, I really recommend "Give it Back".
My favorite band of the moment. Just discovered them about a year or so ago. So mad that I never got to see them or never even heard of them back when they were touring.
They are amazing. And their discography is huge, so there is no shortage of music. They take up a healtht portion of my playlist, along with bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, OSI etc.
I'm growing backwards like Benjamin Button. I should have been loving the angst of this when I was in my 20"s (Hate Song!) Now I'm 71! I feel like banging my head!!!
PT is the greatest band that nobody knows ! Well I sure know them and judging from the majority of comments here, there are plenty more PT lovers who know that they are outstanding. Their music resonates and always leaves you wanting more !
They may actually take over as my favorite band and take over Pink Floyd's space. That is really hard for me to say... but these guys are sooooo bloody talented. Can I have them both as number 1???? ;)
Great band...But; as a Pink Floyd lover; I don't see why both bands can't occupy the same hole...Don't look for the best; i did it for decades; just enjoy all the great and profound artists in the prog genre, jazz, classical, rock, ...Those four are a lifetime pursuit that can NEVER be exhausted.
@@godbluffvdgg I played keys in a Floyd tribute band for over ten years and while Floyd was the greater innovator I can say with some authority that PT albums are considerably more consistently good than Floyd's.
Porcupine Tree is my savior from this fucked up life we live in , keeps me sane . His lyrics are in all of our life's somehow , just dig deep and some of us don't need to cause we know ...
PT nails this set. I wasn't expecting Russia On Ice to be so flawless or Hatesong to outshine the album version by leaps & bounds. The latter is extremely dark & hits home more than I'd ever wish.
Did not get that reception in the UK in 2001, i`m Turning young people in to the `Tree now (2023) an am asked if this a NEW BAND as they have never heard of them, then the RED pill is given, another Convert,I hope Even Less usualy does it,an asked "is that Dave Gilmore?"
Excellent sound production. Also my opinion of drummer Chris Maitland has soared upon hearing this album. As a drummer of prog myself I favor Gavin Harrison's style and improvisations as one of the best living drummers but nice job here Chris.
I don't suppose you have a flac or wav version of this? I lost my full quality files in a file migration and would love a full quality copy. Also, great video :)
there wasnt a porcupine tree bandcamp when this question was asked but now there is. a 2020 remaster is available in 24bit on their bandcamp in whatever file type you prefer! good price too. tons of live gems on there
🇬🇧...SW is brilliant musically and would probably have the ability to play any instrument except perhaps wind instruments and drums... 🇩🇪...SW ist genial musikalisch gesehen & hätte tendenziell wohl die Fähigkeit sich jedwelches Instrument draufzuschaffen außer vielleicht Blasinstrumente & Drums...

You are maybe right Sir. Gavin joined om 2002 if i remember correct. So since this is from 2001 it might be the former drummer Maitland. But it sounds more Gavin then Maitland.
This is definetely not Gavin. There are two reasons: 1.: The style of drumming we can hear on this record is very typical for Maitland. The fills are different, more straight forward, Gavin instead uses more "unconventional" fills. Also the very frequent use of cymbals is a Maitland thing. 2.: The sound of the drumset is very different from Gavins drumset. The snare for example sounds much brighter on Maitlands set. Compare all records before and after In Absentia. The difference in sound is quiet significant imo. But nevertheless Maitland did a great job in the band and inspired my drum style quiet heavily.

Now you're here, don't miss out on Opeth then. Wilson produced some of their albums and apart from this group's tendency to growl, it is fantastic.
@@henrikcarlsen1881 I have listened to some Opeth. Have not gone all in on them. I have also listened to some of The Pineapple Thief.

It's really a great performance on this album
1st saw them about 1990 ish, followed them for years, such a great band!!
Would love to see them live one day
It was only Steven Wilson at that point, and I don't think he played live until after the release of Up the Downstair
@Organic Mechanic Did you catch them on the Closure/Continuation tour that just wrapped up? I'm so grateful I did. Concert of a lifetime!

Kudo's to the Recording Engineers, well done !! What a great Band, Gavin is such an expressive artist.....
this is from before gavin was on drums, it's chris maitland here
Gavin kills it! I love Rush and Neal Peart but Gavin is so much better.
It is not Gavin who plays here. It is Chris Maitland - a drummer of PT before Gavin.

7:00 isn't the womans voice from some weird radio frequency by russia, that keeps on spouting these numbers?
Never really knew where that soundbite was from. But I think I remember hearing about that before on an unsolved mystery list.
It is. There are still some of these soviet-era shortwave radio stations left operating. PT also used one of these samples in Tinto Brass
Gazpacho, the norwegian art rock band also uses them, in the album "Missa Atropos"
Why in English and why numbers?
Check in Wikipedia - "Numbers station"
