For anyone wondering, here's the story of the album. Act I Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory opens to Nicholas, a troubled man going through past life regression therapy. In a hypnotic trance induced by his hypnotherapist, he begins to see a girl named Victoria Page (her full name is in the CD booklet and was shown during the 2019 tour, when the album was performed in its entirety) and a life that feels strangely familiar, despite the fact that he has never been here. ("Regression") He learns that she was murdered, and that he was Victoria in a past life. ("Strange Deja Vu") He begins to believe that Victoria is haunting him to reveal the truth about her murder. ("Through My Words") Nicholas is able to recall that Victoria began distancing herself from her lover Julian Baynes (also given last name in 2019 tour video and is also in the CD insert) because of his drinking and gambling addictions; she sought comfort in Julian's brother Edward Baynes and began an affair with him. Nicholas assumes that Julian murdered her out of jealousy and then killed himself, a story backed up by a newspaper article covering the events, which cites a witness' testimony. However, Nicholas begins to doubt this series of events, and converses with an older man who was more familiar with the case (an animated video that played during "Fatal Tragedy" on the 2019 tour heavily suggests he is a reincarnated Julian). He realizes that he will never be able to get on with his own life until he solves her murder. ("Fatal Tragedy"; "Beyond This Life", "Through Her Eyes") Act II The second act begins by describing Julian's addictions to cocaine and gambling, which drives Victoria away from him. ("Home") Edward feels guilty about deceiving his brother, but decides that his love for Victoria is greater than his guilt, and he seduces her when she is vulnerable following her breakup. ("The Dance of Eternity") After visiting Edward's old house, Nicholas believes he has solved the mystery: Julian had tried to beg Victoria for forgiveness, and when rebuffed, killed both her and Edward, and positioned himself as the witness in the newspaper article. ("One Last Time") Nicholas comes to terms with what has happened, and bids farewell to Victoria. The hypnotherapist ends the session at this point, despite pleas from Victoria's memories. ("The Spirit Carries On") The narrative then cuts to Edward's perspective, revealing that he wished his romance with Victoria was more than a simple affair. As Victoria begins to reconcile with Julian again, Edward confronts the two of them, murders them, then stages the scene and assumes the role of the witness for the newspaper column. The flashback includes Edward telling Victoria to "open [her] eyes" before killing her, echoing the same choice of words the hypnotherapist used to wake Nicholas from his hypnotic trance. ("Finally Free") In the present, Nicholas arrives home, followed by the Hypnotherapist. Nicholas is startled by another request to "open [his] eyes", before the album cuts to (and concludes on) phonographic static. The band confirmed on the Scenes from New York live DVD that the hypnotherapist is Edward's reincarnation, and has killed Nicholas to complete the cycle yet again.

This is a perfect album, for composition, arrangement, execution, sound, lyrics and production. Simply spectacular! I bought the CD in november 1999, few days after its release, and I put it on immediatly. At the third track I was moved and in tears.
Saw them performing at Sheffield in 2000, on way back home some nutter didn't like that my girlfriend overtook him as traffic light turned green, he got out a gun and started waving it, she put her foot down, then he was lost, but it really shook us, especially after hearing that weird story live lol.

Here is the actual story of the album I am John Petrucci, of Dream Theater, I have something like 600 planes jets and heliocopters stashed around the world. I need to collect them, before I break Victoria, from Scenes from a memory 2, out of her glass prison. Would you like to get a free plane or jet or heliocopter? I will teach you to fly. All I need is pilots to help me collect the planes, heliocopters and Jets from around the world. I am giving most of them away for free. But I will need atleast 1 Jet, to make sure, Victoria, can get her revenge on David Jonathan Taylor, after I break her out of her glass prison. Joey Jordinson of Slipknot was the witness, that witnessed me attach her spirit to glass. He and Paul of Slipknot commited suicide last year, because I still hadn't gotten a body to replace Victoria's body, when David blew my sled out of the sky, with a jet and a missle, that caused her to disperse her body, to form a protective shield, to protect Joey and myself. David has tried to kill me at least 100 times since then. Succeeding several times, before I was revived in the hospital later. I need pilots, and people willing to learn how to fly that want a free play. I can teach people super quick to fly, want to help?
After 20 years listening, there's still just so much depth and nuance that I'm finding new references in the lyrics. I'm noticing new short catchy melodic hooks. This is something you can listen to multiple times, focusing on different parts. You might do a "drum listen through" or a "bass listen through", etc.
I just love the johns playing at 4:20 in Overture 1928, just that simple picking of the chords individual notes just sounds so good...never fails to bring a smile to my face
1928 is the year Victoria got blown up by the military with a missle attack. The 10 seconds is the ammount of time we had from launch until it killed Victoria.
I've listened to this album multiple times, but with the lyrics in front of me, it changes everything. I am about to cry, I wonder why now, I don't want this to end
pure masterpiece... It's not my first prog album, but it did teach me how to listen to albums and not just singles. It literally opens the door to true music for me.
Yeah... For me, music isn't and shouldn't be consumed in 3-5 minute sections... I believe it is best consumed like a movie. Whenever I try to explain concept albums to people and prog music in general, I ask them if they would be satisfied with only watching a trailer for a movie rather than the whole movie....Because that's basically what they're doing with mainstream music. It doesn't leave any room for emotions to develop. No room for big tension and release, etc. It's sad, really. "People just don't have the time for music anymore, and no one really cares." as *someone* once said.. ;)
You heard Operation Mindcrime - Queensryche I think this is where they're coming from. Empire to a lesser extent. Marillion Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws but I prefer their later Hogarth sung "Brave" Oh and Marbles too, their most recent FEAR is kind of a conceptual piece but not necessarily as some are linked. Quadrophenia and Tommy by The Who are great concepts. Tales from Topographic Oceans and Fragile by Yes. Porcupine Tree The incident. King Crimson, ITotCK...Floyd.. Jethro Tull...Rush....Genesis, I can go on and on ad infinitum as them albums are on a constant loop on my playlist in life that I find it hard to get into newer material as it either can't hold a torch to the classics and I have not time to try and find out, as I'd love to find something new, but when people say oh try this or that its amazing, I try and I think er no it's not, am I being too picky and not giving them a chance, as some of them originally took time to become greats in my mind. I find that instant hits are hardly played where as the ones that took time yo grow on me are actually the ones with longevity.
@@JustinOhio I don't think it would be worth it since I know that prog fans like to act snobby anyway, BUT music is first and foremost a form of expression. A 2-hour album isn't inherently better than a 2-minute song, far from it. A short single might be less technical, but that's not how we should judge music. We should rather judge it for the emotions it makes us feel, and that's a completely subjective matter.
Believe it or not this whole album used to be one single gigantic ass song that was reworked into this, you can find the demo of what it used to be on youtube
if you've ever read the lyrics from the album its written as a play. with several characters and flashbacks throughout after going through "regression"
Took me a whole year back to early 00s to master this album on guitar, playing all songs again and again and again, every day. Im happy i did it, i can still play the whole album eyes closed.
1:09:42 the woman's scream is the same scream as in the movie "The Green Mile". You can hear it around 19:30 in that movie. Yep, I just wasted 15 minutes of my life figuring that out, you're welcome.
I was watching the Green Mile and heard the scream there. And I was like "Wait, I've heard this before" but it took me quite some time to figure out that it was from that song. And then I also had to figure out what song exactly from the album and when it appears and all that. Tl;dr: I put way too much effort in figuring this out
It's hard to believe Metropolis Part II is old enough to walk into a bar and buy a drink these days. It wouldn't have to though! I'd buy a drink for this album, as it's a classic. Metropolis Part I had always been one of my fave DT songs, and at 20+ minutes it rivaled Rush's 2112 for taking you on an entire journey over a single song.
I never even heard of Metropolis PT 1 thanks for referring to it here in conments, Im guessing PT1 is the story of Victoria, Julian & Edwards twisted love affair that ends in tragedy?
A big Masterpiece! I' ve never seen before a rock opera like this! I like it very much! Thank you Dream Theatre for the feelings and emotions you bring out! Alex from Italy.
Ive always loved this album, its an absolute masterpiece as many have said, but my overriding memory is listening to the spirit carries on about a week after my grandfather passed away, and breaking down in floods of tears as his death finally hit me, so much emotion and amazing lyrics that just really hit home in that moment.
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 - I could play Operation Mindcrime. (Great album) I couldn't touch this one. This album I could leave running for a week and still be noticing little details I hadn't noticed before. The other two albums you mentioned could be stuck inside this one and still not contain as much as went on in this. Lyrically though Operation Mindcrime is definitely bad ass. Geoff Tate also did an excellent job there. This album Scenes from a Memory though is something that would be difficult for anyone to achieve again with the same number of musicians. Now that I said that though there is likely a ding somewhere with the words "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED". Good! EDIT: Another great concept album Opeth - Ghost Reveries.
Sat Apr 24 2021. The city of Chihuahua México is under curfew for covid 19. I'm on my back yard alone . Siping beer playing this masterpiece album by dream theater. Cheers yo everybody!!!!
First DT exposure was a single track on this album. Came across a comment talking about how this “entire album” fits together. I was confused, so one day I tried it out. Here i am. A decade? Later, and here I am, safe in the light that surrounds me.
Honestly, on the first listen, I was multitasking, which I totally regret. I relistened and I’ve never heard a better album. This is absolute perfection. Wow. Every song is just so damn good!
Simply the single greatest experience of an album I ever have, and suspect I ever will, listen to. The emotional journey is overwhelming and potent beyond any other.
Not many people know that the opening line of "Regression" is from an actual past life therapy session by Dr. Brian Weiss. When I played my mother's past life therapy CD at home, the beginning of Metropolis suddenly came on, and I was so surprised that I thought I had mistaken it for a Dream Theater CD.
This record is a past life regression therapy for me. The memory it triggers is from 1928 when a little girl named Victoria was blown up by a military missle and her soul attached to a mirror.
Man what a great video, I love the way the fonts emphasize all the narrative and the tasteful selection of images for instrumental passages. Makes this incredible record even more enjoyable, appreciate all the effort put into this and can only say thank you for sharing
I bought this excellent release immediately after picking up Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence when it was released. It’s hard to believe this was over 20 years ago. These two releases are the pinnacle of Dream Theater and the progressive metal genre as a whole. I happily recall the numerous Prog metal bands that came out during this period. I was already a Prog rock fan from the classic period and always gravitated to the heavier end of the spectrum listening to protoprog metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple other early Prog metal such as Queensryche, Fates warning and Tool. Then their were bands such as U.F.O., Blue Oyster Cult, Iron Maiden and Trouble. Dream Theater was that missing link for me. Iron Maiden was never Prog enough. Queensryche was never metal or technical enough. Dream Theater was a progressive heavy metal breath of fresh air.
Best album ever written in history of music. This is a true peace of art. Hands down. They should do a musical out of this, Jesus Christ! Why still there isn’t a DT musical based on this!!
Probably because they arent “mainstream” enough to get that sort of attention. I do agree that this would br amazing as a stage musical though. But with our luck these past few years, some corporate asshole will try and modernize the songs somehow to appeal to a younger audience who cant handle progressive music.
This is my first Progressive Metal piece of music, and my God is it absolutely outstanding. Home is definitely my favorite, but everything is absolutely amazing. Love this album so much
First heard this in 2000 when I was in 8th grade. No other subsequent album can hold a candle to this. Once I hear the opening I can't help, but listen to the whole thing!
You can definitely hear the David Gilmour influence in this solo specifically. More than one section sounds very reminiscent of Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Like if Gilmour and Vai combined forces, it would sound like this solo
Have you heard Marc Papeghin's horn cover of that part? I don't know why but it just works so well... I can't post the link (youtube would immediately send this comment to the spam box) but it's on RUclips
Absolutely the best album of these kings. Mr. Portnoy is a genius and his teammates as well. This album is forever written in capital letters in the history of music.
Well, if had been the producer I would've ask them to compose less solos of introduction at the start of the album and that every section of their songs were in musical terms more connected to each other, because their songs are like several songs in one, which doesn't happen much in compositions like under a glass moon light or 6:00, in other words I would've demanded more unity from them. In fact, to me that's the reason for which their last albums haven't been so iconic, they lack restraint and I think Kevin Moore gave them that, whereas Rudes is the opposite.
@@g12RRR EXACTLY!!! I love Dream theater they are one of the most talented musicians/ bands in the entire world. But sometimes I feel as if they are doing to much, like too many unnecessary solos/shredding/ and time signatures changes with no buildup to it. Like the ending for Home, or Beyond This Life (song shoulda ended around 8 min mark)
in my opinion, the best music album ever written in the history of music!! dream theater is a marvellous band and they get their masterpiece!!!! probably the album I listened the most in my life!
This is my first time listening to this and my first time listening to Dream Theater. I thought that I would start with this album because, according to multiple people and sources, it is their best album, and it was an incredibly good decision. I love how each song perfectly transitions into the next. The sort is very complex and interesting, and the vocals and instrumentation is incredible. I love how Regressions starts out as a meditation type thing and it slowly transitions into an actual song, and then Overture starts with its heavy drums. It just makes my want to listen to the whole album every time I listen to a song on here. I have a feeling that for now on, if I ever want to listen to a song from this album, I would have to listen to everything before that first because it just makes sense. You’re basically starting a song in the middle of it by starting in the middle of the album. If you read this whole thing, I hope you have a great rest of your day and thank you for you time. 😊😊
This is one of my deathbed/deserted island albums. With no hesitation. I had this shit in my ears for 15 years or so. Beyond this life its still si incredible
what a wonderful album, I started to listen Dream Theater that week, already listened awake, images, and metropolis metropolis is now one of the best albums that I've heard in my entire life, so surprised with that, a spiritual experience of course, never will forget victoria
I loved this album from when I first heard it but only now read a bit about the lyrics and meaning behind them (im normally more the instrumental guy, so lyrics aren't my top priority) and holy shit what a story! With this in mind, you hear the album in yet another angle, and it all just fits together soo well...
Doesen't happen to you that at the start of Act II. After Home and Dance of Eternity you feel pumped up, tired and is you just finished running a marathon. Same energy, same impact and same satisfaction!! And like a little kid: AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN!!!!!
I wish to share this album with all the people I know, they need to know about it! And good work to you sir, never before have I seen so perfectly made lyrics for an entire album! The colours really helped understand the story more.
Might be my favorite album from them; Maybe some Bias since its as old as me. I love the love story and the music is like a symphony of some of the best bands in history putting on the biggest gig in the world. I often compare them as a Heavy Metal Pink Floyd, as well as play DT songs, to my dad since he's a big fan of PF. I'd say I'd love DT as much as he does and for the same reasons he loves PF. So many moments of beautiful composition and song writing makes 20-minute songs feel too short, which I love. Sometimes I never want the song to end or keep going further; DT does it and does it well with constantly switching styles, riffs, and tempos. They may not be my favorite band, but they're definitely one of my personal favorites.
@@okchess I think his vocals objectively are the best but i dont like how softly he sings. I personally think his best vocals were from A change of seasons - Six Degrees.

Did anybody else discover this album through Dragonball Z: History of Trunks back in 2000? It was my first exposure to progressive metal, and basically got me into metal in general.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this masterpiece!! I didn't know the story behind and now I see how everything fits perfectly, the music, the lyrics... everything. I have no words 🥺💚

@@JustinOhio that's not really true though
@@omegazx7236 Could you be a little more vague please? ;)
I like how the music is consistently connected throughout the whole album
thats the whole thing with concept albums... to tell a single story from first song of the album to the last one of the album
Believe it or not this whole album used to be one single gigantic ass song that was reworked into this, you can find the demo of what it used to be on youtube
imo its not even an album, its just a huge single music
if you've ever read the lyrics from the album its written as a play. with several characters and flashbacks throughout after going through "regression"

Happy 23 years anniversary to Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory one of the best, most creative and musically complexed albums ever made!
1:09:42 the woman's scream is the same scream as in the movie "The Green Mile". You can hear it around 19:30 in that movie. Yep, I just wasted 15 minutes of my life figuring that out, you're welcome.
I had no idea! Thank you!
The reason being is that it is actually a stock scream - meaning it's a sound file that can be used publicly I think so they used it here.
hahaha
Kind of a Wilhem scream, right?
I never even heard of Metropolis PT 1 thanks for referring to it here in conments,
Im guessing PT1 is the story of Victoria, Julian & Edwards twisted love affair that ends in tragedy?
Metropolis is in Europe. She can enter at any bar at any time and drink whatever she wants..... duh!
A big Masterpiece!
I' ve never seen before a rock opera like this!
I like it very much!
Thank you Dream Theatre for the feelings and emotions you bring out!

Home is an absolute masterpiece following up Through Her Eyes. Go from mellow to hard in your face as the story shifts. Genius
idk what I've been doing my whole life. Thank you sir for making my life better.
Ive always loved this album, its an absolute masterpiece as many have said, but my overriding memory is listening to the spirit carries on about a week after my grandfather passed away, and breaking down in floods of tears as his death finally hit me, so much emotion and amazing lyrics that just really hit home in that moment.
At every funeral I have been at since listening to this ....
The spirit carries on is what comforts my heart and ❤soul
the best concept album of all time and one of the best in general. it will always have a special place in my heart
For me the best concept project is king diamonds them/conspiracy then Operation Mindcrime and metropolis 2 would be third.
@@futurewavecs Ghost Reveries is also one of my favorites. Good balance between the death metal style and the prog.

This is literally about a girl named Victoria, that was blown up by a military missle attack in 1928....

Fatal tragedy is such an underrated song. Absolute banger
Same thing for me, it's my fav song with Finally Free and The Sprit Carries On

My first dream theater experience... 10 years ago with this record and now I hear it to sleep at night..
Synchronicity
This record is a past life regression therapy for me. The memory it triggers is from 1928 when a little girl named Victoria was blown up by a military missle and her soul attached to a mirror.
The 10 second count down is how long we had from the time the missle was launched until it blew up Victoria.

I love Mike Portnoy's signature at the end. He's such an incredible talent. Tremendously inspiring.

I played with the idea of writing a script when I was studying music and drama. It would've been a perfect musical.
@W R Sporing you're way ahead of me pal; anyone who wants to dedicate anything to DT is a hero in my eyes!
The live DVD that came out in 01, Scenes From New York, is effectively a live concert to a music video. I probably watched it 20 times back then
@@Calewpro I remember buying it really cemented my admiration awe for DT and the towers on the artwork bittersweet

This album is complete. Nothing could be added nor taken out. It is precisely , to the note, what it should be.
The ebbs and flows of each tune pieces together with the lyrics. They never got back to this peak
Happy 23rd Birthday to the greatest album of all time!
One of the first CD's that i bought a few years ago, along with "OK Computer" and "Eric Clapton: MTV Unplugged". This album is out of this world.

Here is the actual story of the album I am John Petrucci, of Dream Theater. But I took on the name Jonathan David Taylor, because the man David Jonathan Taylor. I have something like 600 planes jets and heliocopters stashed around the world.
I have always loved this band, a little metal never hurt anyone.
