Ambien is a SUPER weird drug. Do not try to go to bed hungry when taking it, or yes, you WILL get up and acquire and eat food. But, it's weirder than that. It doesn't make you crazy. You are just as competent and capable as you ever are, you're just not forming memories. That's why you forget. It might be different for high dosages, but I'm fairly certain you could get up in the morning, take Ambien, and go to work, and no one would notice anything amiss. It does not make you sleepy. Not at all. If you lie down and try to go to sleep, you will succeed. But if you do not do that, if you stay up instead, you'll stay awake with no issue. The next day you won't remember hardly anything you did the prior night, but you won't just fall unconscious or feel groggy or anything. I took it for awhile because I wasn't sleeping well and waking up was extremely difficult, and I'd been late to work (like 2-3 hours late) dozens of times and it was getting me into trouble (luckily my job wasn't time-sensitive at all and it was only a big deal if I missed a meeting or something, otherwise I would just work late to compensate). I never had the experience of doing anything unusual, but I did do things like going out and buying a sandwich in the middle of the night, cooking and eating food at night, etc before I figured out not to go to bed hungry. Oh, and the surprise packages from Amazon. Those were always fun. Didn't remember ordering anything, but I'd look and sure enough I ordered stuff late at night and just didn't remember. It was always stuff I wanted, and stuff I would have bought if I was awake, though. Such a super weird drug... it helped me out though, I was able to get back into sleeping right.

How it does this I have been unable to learn (and seriously I have tried, its mechanisms of action are VERY poorly understood). I did learn that it, for some reason, has been used in multiple cases on people who have been in a persistent vegetative state for years... and they woke up.

I was in a hotel fire in Panama City, during spring break, at the holiday inn, on the 12th floor. Myself and three other of my friends have to stumble down 12 flights of stairs hammered beyond ability to actually walk. We basically stumbled down the stairs and I realized when we got to the 2nd floor my friend nick wasn’t with us. He literally slept through smoke coming in the room, fire alarms, a helicopter hovering over the hotel, and firefighters banging on the door.
All this because some moron threw a blunt roach onto the tiki bars dry palm leaf roof and it was similar to throwing a truck load of dry leaves on a fire.
Loved this - Glad Ari is getting the recognition he deserves. Joe could probably tell stories about his times with Joey Diaz for HOURS!

My weird experience with Ambien was taking my pill, going to sleep, then waking up in a hospital with an IV and a nurse sitting over in the corner. Apparently I had gotten up shortly after falling asleep and taken the whole rest of the bottle of Ambien. I was living with my grandparents at the time, and they told me I came out of my room still in my boxers and t-shirt and went outside, got into my car, and tried to drive somewhere. Luckily they stopped me and took me to the ER. But goddamn was it surreal to go to sleep normally and wake up in a hospital with all this shit hooked up to me. In the end the nurse was there because they suspected it might have been a suicide attempt. So yeah, trying to convince ER personnel I wasn't suicidal was... fun. I take benzos for sleep now, at least I don't have to worry about waking up naked in another neighborhood in the middle of winter.
