Lockdowns haven't united everyone. We don't all want global government, mass surveillance, and to be under house arrest without anyone even asking if we wanted all our freedoms to be taken away. And the poem, which is one of my absolute favourites, was somewhat spoiled by the fact that whoever made it doesn't know that a plural doesn't require an apostrophe. I feel that Donne's acceptance of death as a inevitability is a lesson to those who illogically want the healthy locked away, with the mistaken idea that this will magically save the lives of the old, and ill.
This is one of my very favorite poems. I first heard it in the early 60's in "study hall" in high school, meaning that I was assigned a free period to sit in the back of an English Literature class. I was busy studying when I heard the teacher read the poem. It touched something very deep in my soul, and I welled up in tears. I never forgot it. "No Man is An Island" has guided my footsteps throught my life since then. It still lives in my heart, and I plan to have the minister read it at my funeral. If only everyone were to take its sentiment to heart...
If they be two, they are two so As stiff twin compasses are two; Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show To move, but doth, if the other do. -- John Donne The Lord rebuke our pride. The Lord bless our humility. The Lord rebuke our greed. The Lord bless our charity. The Lord rebuke our wrath. The Lord bless our kindness. The Lord rebuke our envy. The Lord bless our patience. The Lord rebuke our lust. The Lord bless our chastity. The Lord rebuke our gluttony. The Lord bless our temperance. The Lord rebuke our sloth. The Lord bless our diligence. This multi-faceted perception of God should not be conflated with God Himself. This is our human perception of our experiences of God’s interaction with us. But as James 1:17 yet states, every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. As 1 John 1:5 states, this then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
This poem has a lot of meaning and good morals in it, but with this music and the voice... It just makes this poem mean much more than just a random poem with a random meaning. Whoever does not understand what the poem means... I feel sad for him or her because (again) this poem has a great "lesson" in it that is a 100% true.💗

I kind of wish I heard this when I was a lot younger. I have never felt more alone in my entire life. But as I stayed there for 3 years I learned to adapt I've learned to become an island I've learned to trust no one because there is no one I can trust or rely on and in a way it was peaceful that way just me and my thoughts me and my work because no matter how many people are around you or want to be on your side they will eventually leave the only thing that stays is the job. And now I am in a better working environment and as much as I love it I miss the hospital because I miss the isolation. When I was there I was an island and I want to become an island again

I am sorry to say this but it is not -- at least in its original form -- a poem. It's an extract from one of Donne's sermons published in Devotions upon Emergent Occasions (1624). Of course, it is also a poem, a great and eloquent one, that just happened to be written in prose. I'll retreat to the Pedantry Corner now.
Brilliant reading...true Donne did a stint in the military but when I was studying for an English Lit degree (so not random trivia) Donne was much more renowned first as an unapologetic homewrecker than a military man--his interest in a woman appeared not to consider her marital status. Second he was known as a clergyman (that word doesn't do his refocus justice...'spiritual devotee?') who walked away completely from his former 'easy' rakish life--few people accomplish a complete transformation of behaviour as Donne did. This piece was written in the second [divinely inspired] part of his life, some years after his wife had died and after 5 of their 12 children had died. At the time this was written his commitment to The Greater Than (whatever each person names it) battled with his internal grief and loss prompting him to end his life. 'Do not ask 'whom does the bell toll for?' (gossip)...' because in all cases when the bells tolls if we are appropriately engaged with and empathic towards the community 'it tolls for us'. It never tolls for another--you hear the bell? We have all suffered a loss.

Trading works but isn't an authentic, meaningful contribution to society. Totally agree it's sensible to make the most of opportunities, but it can't feel positive unless we're being productive. We are human; social, sentient beings.
Each of us is a part of the vast Universe, the mysteries of which scientists around the world will try in vain to unravel for many centuries to come! The world is already a huge mystery to our minds, but we know one thing. True friends and those whom we love with all our soul, a part of ourselves, islands lost in the ocean and the depth of the sky reflected in our eyes. Let the bell wait and give us time to enjoy life and wait for the long-awaited happiness, as Thomas Garvey eventually found it in his novel “The Wave Runner”).
⭐🌎 “No two men can be found who may be said to be outwardly and inwardly united. The evidences of discord and malice are apparent everywhere, though all were made for harmony and union. ...The tabernacle of unity hath been raised; regard ye not one another as strangers. Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch... _So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.”_ -Bahá’u’lláh, Writings from the Baha'i Faith
someone said "each man is within an island; what has been borne one must bear alone; the pain of living is always a personal affair"- ernest hemmingway. . . . . . .as a social being man could not afford to be alone by himself. .yet man's personal pain or even his glory is only he himself to bear or enjoy. .even in a group, man cant do or let others do the suffering or rejoice with him. .others may only extend sympathize on the pain or ride with the happiness. .
and someone said, PAIN IS A RESISTANCE TO PLEASURE, IF YOU HAVE A PAIN SOMEWHERE IT IS BECAUSE U R DONG SOMEHING WRONG WITH THAT PART OF UR BODY. we are all, fundamentally, alone because fundamentally WE ARE ALL ONE. SO NATURALLY IF WE ARE ALL ONE, THEN WE ARE ALL ALONE (ALLONE). IT IS A TAUTOLOGY. A IS A AND A IS NOT NOT A.
Cass Conner 😡 Why are you associating with this and the technology behind it? You reject any semblance of unity, so just go away and live your miserable life in isolation. Unfortunately you are not alone in behaving negatively and spreading unhappiness around the world.
We are all grafted from the same tree and share in sufferings of this word, even though one's self may differ from another, it is still part of a collective. Humanity is not only person but every body within it. No mind nor being may be intertwined with the other precisely, but we all are reliant on those around. If one were to kill someone, that one person would affect a family. If a president were to commit mass genocide, the entire country would be within his ideologies- keeping that in mind, not one man is an island nor entire of itself. We share interest and ideologies and we grow with those we find a connection to.
I don't wish to be rude but the description has an error as Donne lived in the 16-17th centuries not the 18th century. As a side note, this is not a poem, but a sermon he delivered while working as the Dean of St. Paul's cathedral.
My mother was so excited to see this poem. Any man's death diminishes me. When she heard that 70% of the coronavirus deaths need not have been she cried and cried.
No man is an island, Entire of itself; Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, As well as if a promontory were: As well as if a manor of thy friend's Or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, Because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.
"Any man's death diminishes me

Time marches on!
_So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.”_
-Bahá’u’lláh, Writings from the Baha'i Faith

someone said "each man is within an island; what has been borne one must bear alone; the pain of living is always a personal affair"- ernest hemmingway. . . . . . .as a social being man could not afford to be alone by himself. .yet man's personal pain or even his glory is only he himself to bear or enjoy. .even in a group, man cant do or let others do the suffering or rejoice with him. .others may only extend sympathize on the pain or ride with the happiness. .
Yes, this RUclips clip is, to me, just so much Collectivist B.S. Live Free or Die.
and someone said, PAIN IS A RESISTANCE TO PLEASURE, IF YOU HAVE A PAIN SOMEWHERE IT IS BECAUSE U R DONG SOMEHING WRONG WITH THAT PART OF UR BODY. we are all, fundamentally, alone because fundamentally WE ARE ALL ONE.
Sir Meow The Library Cat Ah yes, another misguided child who thinks all the worlds problems can be solved by a “Group Hug”.
Isn't "For Whom the Bell Tolls" Ernest Hemingway ???
My 12th great-grandfather
I don't wish to be rude but the description has an error as Donne lived in the 16-17th centuries not the 18th century. As a side note, this is not a poem, but a sermon he delivered while working as the Dean of St. Paul's cathedral.
This is NOT A POEM, but an extract from his Meditations XVII. Sombody transformed it into a poem but it is actually prose.
My mother was so excited to see this poem. Any man's death diminishes me. When she heard that 70% of the coronavirus deaths need not have been she cried and cried.
No man is an island,
Entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were:
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were.
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
