Osterag played great defense on shaq in that series including Malone. It shows how good the Utah jazz were. Along with other good role players including Stockton
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. Ostertag was solid. Good defender and great shot blocker. Not an offensive threat, but few centers were. No shame in not being able to stop prime Shaquille ONeal. Ostertag was under appreciated. As a Sonics and Blazers fan, who the Jazz KILLED, I respect Ostertag.
Ostertag was bragging about this series when the Lakers and Jazz met for the 97-98 season opener, Shaq got so mad about it that he slapped Ostertag and got suspended for a game.
Iight i gotta take it back. Ostertag is guarding 3 fucking people at once. They gave him way too much defensive responsibility as a young player and he set picks for Sloans whole offense
@1995 GetJiggyWitIt I know that it happened in a shoot-around the next preseason, when the 2 teams were scheduled to play each other. But the Ostertag trash talking was mostly a run-off from Game 5 of the previous yrs' semifinals, coupled w/ the Shaq frustration. I was meaning the origin for the beef.
Ostertag could've hit the weight room and got even stronger. Dude looked a bit too doughy and his lower body was lacking. Ben Wallace for ex. trained like a Defensive Lineman and it showed even at 6'7''.
doubling SHAQ was stupid. OStertag was doing a great job on him and shaw would just outlet it all the time. jerry sloan was making bad coaching decisions there
Yea that is true in reality .. but the way the Nba refs did it.. is they made sure to usually foul out Ostertag as quick as they could. In the past 20 years it has been waay worse though. They only let a handfull of "preferred" big men block whatsoever aT aLL. But yea whenever they wanted Tag out .. they would just keep calling fouls on literally nothing .. and because he wasnt an allstar .. all the low brow basketball fans were like duhh ok . . yea i guess Ostertag should be fouled out yea that sounds right . Durp.
So in the reality of basket ball = yes. But in the sick reality that included nba refs . . Sloan was trYing to keep him in the game. O was teRRible on offense but was a very good defender , especially against big men.
Part of the problem with the Lakers before Phil took over as coach was a lack of leadership. Del Harris really wasn't that great of a coach and didn't really command respect in the locker room, he just got by for as long as he did just because the Lakers roster was that good. Shaq and Kobe were both too young and immature to step up and be leaders themselves. This usually wasn't too much of a problem during the regular season when there wasn't too much pressure but not having a true leader became more of an issue when they ran into a team like Utah in the playoffs that was experienced, disciplined, and battle tested.
touche... but that sounds like the equivalent of dueling a shield against a sword imo. shaq still dropped 25 on him though lol. sorry dude nothing personal. its just that i was like 7 when i saw the bulls jazz series watching POsterTagg get bitched left and right and the humor never left.
Jacob Graves Keefe fell off though. Foster was meh. Carr was actually used at the 4 more. Ostertags butterfingers were typical of most centers of the time too. He's a double double in todays game. He also played half ass unless the game really mattered.
@@chilling8987 lol Ostertag wouldn't have made the NBA today lol he would get smoked in the G-League.. Rudy Gobert is alot more mobile and better instincts than Oystertag.. Rudy Gobert would've won multiple DPOY in the weakass 90s

He's #50 all time in best career defensive rating, at 101.05. The only active players with a lower defensive rating than Malone. Dwight Howard Rudy Gobert Joakim Noah Andre Drummond All centers. Truth be told that's why Shaq smacked Ostertag.. Ostertag played good defense against Shaq then talked about it with a reporter..Shaq got mad 😂😂😂
People also sleep on Jeff Hornacek.
Stockton was no "role player"
Jazz were trash lol. They never won a title.
0:49 It's not every game you see Shaq get blocked on a dunk attempt.
Yeah, and this was young LAL Shaq, not Cle or Bos Shaq.

It was all because earlier Ostertag blocked SodomShack 3 times in one game.
I watched eVery televised Jazz game so i would know.
An Ostertag took it like a punk.
He should have been suspended for the entire season. Assaulting players is not okay. If I was Ostertag I would have pressed charges as well.

Ostertag and Big Ben Wallace had the size and toughness to give the bigger Shaq a hard time. Rare company.

Ive had the pleasure to meet Greg recently. Cool guy. Would love to be able to hear his stories.
Played on an AAU all-star team with Ostertag back in 1988.....got some great stories!!
