  • The Toro Greensmaster 1600 reel mower is a commercial-grade reel mower that's commonly used on golf course tee boxes, green aprons and other highly manicured areas. This makes it a perfect fit for your golf course lawn where only the best quality of cut will do. In this video I provide a detailed review of my greensmaster 1600 reel mower. I discuss specifications like the height of cut, control system and dig into the pros and cons of this mower vs. other powered reel mowers like a Tru Cut. This review will tell you everything you need to know to decide if a Toro Greensmaster 1600 is the right mower for your golf course lawn.
    The Greensmaster 1600 produces an amazing cut on my Bermuda golf course lawn. It does this because of how the weight is distributed. It makes use of a grooved front roller a heavy rear drum which is used to propel the mower. The net result is the mower produces amazing lawn stripes without any burn in marks that look unsightly on the Bermuda grass lawn. The greensmaster control system is very easy to operate which makes mowing fast and efficient.
    Because the width of cut is 26", mowing time is also reduced because less passes are needed. The greensmaster reel mower is powered by a very quiet and efficient Subaru engine that has more than enough power to run the mower effortlessly. Be sure to continue following the channel to see this reel mower in action in future videos!

    Used this for 6 years working at a golfcourse back in the early 2000s. Great mower for fairway collars and aproaches.
    The main thing that can be a knock on it is compared to the smaller greensmaster flex series, and why we didn't consider it for greens, is the operator input. The smaller 1000 series had the spoke for traction engagement also control reel engagement by just tilting it a bit inward before pushing it forward, which made it so much cleaner to operate. It also weighed a lot less but had almost the same motor power which made it handle so much better. It was a real surgeons tool on the greens with more challenging design.
    Great content!

    Ok, I have to commend you on your audio! You get it. Yes the mower is awesome, but your lapel mic recording and syncing with your video is hands down the best part of your videos. This single thing sets you apart from 98% of all RUclipsrs! I tell people all the time, audio is the most important in your video, yet it’s generally overlooked! Strong work!

    Nice, I have a 1600 1999 model. I love the cut. Have had to replace alot of parts. Mostly bearings so I've had to learn how the machine works. Its aggravating sometime but when its all back together its great. I currently mow my bermuda at 1 "

      Very nice Pop and Son Lawn Care. A 1999 unit that's still going strong is pretty impressive. Figure that it's over 20 years old at this point so having to replace a few bearings is to be expected I guess. I bet you get amazing stripes with a 1" height of cut.

    Setup proper sir! Grooved roller out front and 8-blade reel is the right rig for home lawns. Mower setup is everything for quality of cut.
    Subaru engines were my favorites, so, so good. Quiet and powerful, well-built. Unfortunately, Subaru exited the small engine biz. So parts will eventually disappear. Take care of that engine, and I highly doubt you’ll have any trouble.
    One advantage of a greensmower vs other reels is the weight and the rollers. A grooved roller up front followed by that big traction roller will have a noticeable smoothing effect on the lawn. After one season, my lawn was a totally different animal.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Brian! I'll do my best to take care of it. It's very quiet and smooth. Very noticeable difference from the Honda on my Tru Cut. Not sure what kind of muffler system Subaru is using, but it's very, very, quiet. I totally agree on the effect the mower is having on the lawn. Every time I cut it, it gets better. Smoother and smoother.

      It would be cool Anthony. For a green though, that would mean daily mowing for sure. The mower is definitely capable of it though. I'd have to really level on spot of the lawn if I were going to do it.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      I do W Jack. I have a nice set of Mizunos from when I used to play a lot. I'll think about it some more. I can easily mow a green every morning. It's not like it's a super big area. :-)

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      But I'd have to build some unevenness into the lawn for a proper green. Would need different types of breaks depending on where the hole is cut. I never got my handicap under 10. 8 is really good. You can play with anyone with an 8 hdcp and not feel like you're slowing down play.

    Nice mower!! No need to take the transport axles off. Being that you are already fully invested in this just get a landscape blade for the tight spots. Personally the roller grinding on the concrete would drive me insane. I have only one obstruction but I hate using the string trimmer because it chews the edges so I am going to pull the trigger on the landscape blade been hesitant for a while but after seeing the way it compliments a greens mower's cut its worth the investment.

    • @RonHenry

      From the videos I’ve seen SMK, they seem to cut very well. I still have my Tru Cut so I’ve been using that for cutting between Alex’s lawn and mine. Yes it’s crazy to use 2 mowers to cut the lawn but the result is really good. 😎 Thanks for the tip.

    Thanks for all info on your channel. I'm new to reel cutting and recently purchased a Cal trimmer (Honda motor, 7 blade). It does a good job and its given me a noticeably better cut than my rotary. I want to know some if the things I need to be careful of so as to not damage the reel mower. How close can I get to the curb etc. Maybe you can make a short video bout that for us novices, lol. Thanks again, love your channel!!!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      Sure thing Chris. Does your California trimmer have a front roller or caster wheels? With a tiny roller you can get really close and even overhang a bit without issues. This of course assumes that your sidewalk/pavement is flat without any sharp peaks jutting up. Kind of unlikely but that’s the only qualifier I’d add. I’ve used both the greensmaster and tru cut along the pavement without issue. Let me know if I can help with anything else. 👍😎

    • @chrisdadda
      @chrisdadda 4 года назад +1

      @@RonHenry I have a front roller. I try to check for small pebbles, tree debris etc. I mow more cautiously than with my rotary, lol. Thanks for the feedback!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      If you have a front roller, you should be fine. Remember the front roller rides quite a bit lower than the reel. If you're cutting at .5" or higher there's practically 0 chance of the reel impacting the concrete. Again, with both the Tru Cut and the Greensmaster I overhang a tad and there's never been an issue.

    Most excellent Ron. Looks like you located a very nice unit. There is certainly nothing wrong with the Tru-Cuts, McLanes or Cal-Trimmers, but the Toro is a step up. The quality of cut will be readily apparent. Ground speed is NBD as better mowing is usually obtained at slower pace anyway.
    If the protruding axles are problematic near the rocks (or other obstacles) perhaps you can segregate these areas with something like a metal edging. This can be pounded in to a low height where the axles will ride over. I have had good luck with Coyote Landscape edging as well as Edge Right.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      Definitely agree Richard. The quality of cut with the greensmaster is so much better than what I was getting with the Tru-Cut. I imagine the combination of the grooved roller, drum propulsion system, weight and 8 blade reel is making a lot of the difference. I'll have to look into the Coyote landscaping edge. I've been using the Tru-Cut to clean up those areas but if the landscape blade produces similar results, I can just go that route. Thanks for chiming in Richard. Really appreciate it. 👍😎

    • @richardgleason5953
      @richardgleason5953 4 года назад +1

      @@RonHenry Ron, if you decide to try the edging, here is what I do... lay out a garden hose to get the desired shape and curves. Then I take my stick edger and cut the slot about 2" (or so) deep following the hose. Then, I place the edging in the slit, bending to follow the contours. Then I take a hammer / 2x4 board and pound in to the desired depth. That seems to be the easiest approach. The edging comes in 8' pieces with 5 per pack. The 4" height would be sufficient. BTW, it's much easier on wet ground.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +1

      Very nice Tony. The weight of the Greensmaster is an advantage. Helps the mower stay connected to the turf which decreases the likelihood of an uneven cut. rinse it with water after mowing. You shouldn't have to use anything too harsh on it unless you're trying to clean it up when you first get it. Cleanup after mowing should only require water. How often do you have to adjust the reel to bedknife? I have a Swardman and love it, but it’s not as industrial as the toro. Thinking of keeping the Swardman for verticutting and brushing sand and getting a toro as the workhorse for the 10,000 sq ft lawn.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      Hi keyeskennard. I've put about 8 hours of mowing on it, and I've not adjusted the reel to bed knife distance as yet. The mower still cuts paper and has held a sharp edge very well. Adjusting the reel to bed knife clearance is a very, very simple operation. Literally takes a minute or 2. I'm still keeping my Tru Cut for tighter spaces so I get what you're thinking as far as keeping the Swardman. The Greensmaster is built like a tank. Even more solid that the Tru Cut. 👍😎

    Nice !!! I see Tge Lawn Tools have responded, they make some great videos with a Toro mower. I believe Brett from Brettsgrasscapades has a good video on removal of the axels ...
    Professionally, I’ve mowed a ton with the Jacobsen greens mowers. Personally I own a John Deere 220B. I got it over a Toro for one simple reason... a great deal fell in my lap before I could find a Toro. I can’t speak to how good or bad it is because unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with a hip injury and recovering from surgery.

      Heya Steve. Yep. I plan on doing the basic service myself. When it comes to greensmowers, like the Toro, Jacobson or JD, they're probably fairly comparable in cutting quality assuming a good setup.
      Kris Martel (another viewer) sent me a video on removing the axles I haven't done it yet because the main reason for removing them would be to be able to mow the swale better but that won't matter. The mower is still too wide for that space. That's still going to be the Tru Cut's domain 😎👍 For cutting the open spaces and the front lawn, the Greensmaster does an awesome job though. What is your experience with backlap frequency? Also, I'm kinda scared about getting my reel the correct height in relation to the bed knife. Any concerns you can share?

    • @RonHenry

      I don't typically backlap Patrick. I try to be really disciplined about not mowing anything other than grass with the mower. That does a lot to preserve the edge on the reel and bedknife. I'd consult the service manual on setting the clearance between the reel and bedknife. You don't want too much or too little clearance. Hope this helps.

What tool or method do you use? I want to give it a try, but would obviously have to scalp and reset the HOC. I'm unfamiliar with exactly how to adjust the HOC on Greensmaster. Do you use one of those expensive measuring tools or is there a simpler (cheaper) way? Could be a good quick video idea?

      Hi S Flynn. If you use the Greensmaster it's going to ruin you. :-) There's practically no scenario where you use that mower and don't end up buying one. I don't have a video on changing the height of cut as yet. It's something I can work on. I do use an accuguage to properly set the height of cut. You really want to use something like that because setting up the height of cut properly has a HUGE influence on how the machine performs. If one side of the bedknife is lower than the other, you're going to get a weird looking result. Setting it isn't hard but you do need the correct tool. Great work, Ron! I waited all week for this video and I'm happy it finally dropped today. The GM1600 was an excellent choice. I purchased a GM1000 for my Kentucky Bluegrass lawn last month and it's been an addiction for me ever since. I've already put 20 hours on it in less than a month covering 10K sq ft.
    It looks like you have a wide Wiehle roller on the front. Is that correct? Do you know how the wide roller differs from the narrow roller?
    Also, excellent choice by choosing the 8-blade reel as opposed to the 11 or 14 bladed reels. The mower I purchased came with an 11 blade reel but I paid to have an 8 blade reel installed before the unit was delivered.
    Last thought...have you given any consideration to adding a groomer reel? I know some guys love groomers while other folks think they destroy the turf. A groomer won't do me much good since I'm cutting at about 1 inch. But I'm curious to hear your thoughts on whether groomers are worth the extra 💰.
    Thanks again for putting out this video and we look forward to your future videos!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      Thanks so much LG. I'm glad it was worth the wait. I've been cutting with it for almost 2 weeks now and love it more and more each time I do. The quality of cut is just amazing. I'm not sure how to tell if I have the wide wiehle roller. It's definitely a wider diameter than the roller on my Tru Cut. If you have any tips I'd be interested in hearing.
      As far as groomers go, I don't think I'd get a lot of benefit from one. I cut at .625" so I probably wouldn't see a ton of benefit. I'd also be more likely to scalp because the mower essentially becomes a touch longer which won't play nice with uneven turf. For me that's more of a tool for actual golf greens. I don't see myself adding one.
      Thanks for watching the content man. I really appreciate it.

    • @LG-cz4hb
      @LG-cz4hb 4 года назад +1

      I agree with you. I think groomers are better suited for for golf applications.
      Regarding different roller types, here is a link to Toro's site that goes through the differences of the different roller types: www.toroadvantage.com/greens-mowers/get-greensmower-right-accessories/
      I'm still new to all of this, so I'm still learning about the different roller types myself. The number of accessories that can be purchased for these machines is insane (and somewhat overwhelming for the average homeowner).

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

    I went straight from a rotary to a GM 1000 and I have no regrets on skipping over the residential models. Everything about these mowers is just perfect. Have you considered installing the clip kit? It adjusts the frequency of clippings by adding torque and slowing the reel down a bit. It gives a better quality of cut if you’re cutting 0.5 inches or higher. That and the 8 blade reel together is supposed to be the sweet spot for mowing at a fairway height. That’s what I’d like to do eventually. Supposedly it’s not too hard to install but you have to order it from Toro and it’s about $400

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      Hi Dangerlawn. I haven't considered installing the clip kit. My actual cutting HOC is close to half inch with the bench height being set to .625. The mower already cuts so well, I'm not really seeing a need to mess with it. I don't see myself doing the groomer either. The GM 1600 is definitely a game changer. Serious step up in improving the quality of cut. It's cool that you went straight from a rotary to a greensmaster. You weren't messing around 👍😎

      James Hudson they are a lot like cars in that you pay a premium for something with low miles, all the maintenance done, and a warranty.
      They can be had at auction in as-is/where-is condition for $200 or less even. And like cars, if you have the ability to work on it and correct any issues, it may be worth that chance. If you are looking for something to just mow with, you’re better off buying from a used equipment dealer like Ron did.
      Units that are less than 10 years old and have had any issues corrected by a professional, typically retail for $1000-$2500. In exceptional cosmetic condition, super low hours, again, expect to pay a premium. I have seen “like new” units (recent models) from various brands go for $5-6k.

    • @RonHenry

      Yes it does. A 14 blade reel is really best suited for the higher mowing frequency associated with lower cutting heights. That reel designed for mowing greens (< .25").
