D.I.Y. AUTO SCHOOL what if the paint manufacturer suggest you to use 500 grit as final sand paper , should I use 320 or do what the paint manufacturer suggests ?
Its probably a dumb question but i've got construction marking paint could i use that as a guide coat? What grit should i use for a cheap old truck flat black paint job?
Pete, you have been the most helpful guy in teaching me bodywork. My 77 Trans Am is flawless including my stitched in quarter panel and I can look at it with pride knowing I did it all myself with your help. My next project is a 67 Mustang that will be a breeze. Thanks again for your videos and hard work. You Rock bro!
Was the trans am your first I’m doing my first truck just needa finish block sanding and then paint I learned a lot from Pete answered a lot of questions I was always overthinking
Man, this video was a godsend! I watched it while I was wet sanding a 61 Impala hood; had never done it any other way. I switched to your technique and it is so much better! Thanks!
Pete, you are seriously the best channel on here. I am restoring a 62 Galaxie Convertible and it needs serious sheet metal work. I don't know how many times i have thought to myself, "I bit off more than i can chew." Then I just go to my friend Pete and he says i can do it. Instead of using Chinese patch panels, I'm making them from a 2 door sedan that I drove home. The 2 door was T-boned and I have been lucky the damage and the rust on both cars in in different places. I am just finishing a patch I did on the rear corning by the tail light. I did a butt weld but I am wishing I had done a flange weld. Next time. Anyway, Thanks for all the help Pete. (I ordered a T-shirt yesterday.)
This video was much better than the others. Pete stayed focused on explaining things while staying on course with the agenda. And with out getting pissed about the haters. Great job and great video. Thanks
Man l love your channel helped me out a lot it's been 20yrs since I've done body work and your videos helped me get right back in the game! Restoring a 74 plum crazy purple duster for a friend and it needed so much body work, I used a dakota tail gate and an old Buick hood for all the patch panels and it's looking amazing thanks for the great easy to understand tutorials!
Pete that video was just so good it really answered my questions from other videos thank you so much. Understanding the grit equivalence between wet and dry sanding is so important and I understand it now thanks to you Pete. Best wishes from Australia.
Thanks to u IV been working on my dads first car 1969 chevelle every day he gave it to me when I was 15 now I’m 33 and berly getting her done thanks to u .u been a lot of help
Could not find a better video explaining wet and dry sanding and techniques. I needed to know what grits to use for dry sanding metal and body parts and I got my answers! Thanks!
Just wanted to say I really like your channel Pete and I extremely appreciate you taking the time to show us blue collar guys your trade so we can try to apply it to our own cars
Great tutorial, my friend Pete. That was excellent. After high build primer, I use 180, 220 and finally 400. Also, I clean my foam blocks with the air hose. Keep up the fantastic videos.
Thanks, we really like your videos. You explain even the simple stuff, but you keep it quick. You are very easy yo listen to and learn from. Thanks again!
Looking forward to seeing GTO finished...always enjoy your videos..I went to body school in 1971.. Our instructor was very good..he didn't like bondo he liked to use lead..he could use bondo he just didn't like it Back then the bondo wasn't really that good.. They make it better now...Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Pete.....again, as always.....thanks. You videos are a wealth of information --- that transpires over to about any other project I take on. Doing It Right or Don't Do It At All.....is a all American motto! Your videos should be required "mandatory watching" for the Clowns in Washington! Anyway, looking forward to upcoming videos from Moab......good luck & God Speed.
Hey Pete do you use long boards on your final sanding.Personally I use them both on blocking and final sanding as not to create waves using just short blocks....
I used to live in Utah. In Moab, you may not get all the humidity but you're DAMN sure going to get the heat! The high temp for Moab in July is ONE HUNDRED DEGREES! It's the desert of course :)
Thanks Pete that helps me stop the guessing whats to rough to leave scratches and to fine to stick also i've been using to much pressure . Get out of Dallas before the summer heat starts
When he says don’t directly use your hands and sand paper alone cause it will shown hand scratch prints And I have a flash back of literally earlier today doing that at school 😭
Perfect timing for this video Pete I’m getting ready for final prime and block. I had a discussion with a buddy at work about it just today I told him it seems like 320 for dry sanding is enough. Also great advice on the jams only need to take them to 180 .
Thanks D.I.Y. Auto School for the videos and tutorials. And thank you My Friend Pete for taking the time out of your busy schedule to show us the tricks of the trade. With the knowledge that I have learned from watching your videos I'm going to attempt to repair a bedside panel on my 2004 Dodge Dakota. I'm going to cut out the rust and weld in a patch panel. Can I ask your advice on something ? First I'm thinking about doing a flange weld on the panel, second I'm going to need to do this over a couple of weekends since this is my daily driver and I work 6 days a week and I was wondering if I could drill holes in the flange and temporarily hold it in place with rivets so that way I have my truck to drive. Or would that just mess everything up?
Little GTO you are looking fine.. 3 deuces and a 4 speed and a 389.. Lol. I use a hard block on the clear cause it gets it flatter like you said on the primer. I spent all week buffing one my god. Keep up the good work Pete.
So I'm painting a 97 Honda Civic I've had 2K urethane primer on it since April and now I'm wanting to go ahead and paint it. I figured I could block sand it with 320 or 400 but I don't know if I need to seal it after that or if I can just throw paint and clear on it? I'm still a student I practice on my own stuff and I'm still learning and he help is much appreciated thank you
Wow, I always wet sanded everything. No dust and you can sight the panel while it's wet. I guess the guide coat replaces that but is sure is nice to see that first set of reflections on a panel!
great tips! thanks i've been looking everywhere what grit to use to wet sand my primer for base... one question though does it matter if its plastic, i'm doin' an overhaul on it and repaint, primer is done just wondering if it still applies to plastic as well. thanks guys, cheers.
my grandfather used to paint cars years ago, dry sand 180-320 just like you explained!!! back then it was laquers and acrylic enamel!!!!!!! i thought that lesson was so neat, thats what i always did, thats how i was taught cause he hated sanding!! ha ha i guess i will stick to the grandfather clause!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey bratha grate job I have a question so I have a 1980 malibue Ive been building and the primer is kinda crappy and I wanna learn how to do it my self so the primer has been there for A year so do I sand it to the metal or wet sand the primer and re primer it ???
I have a question Pete should u paint over mild scale what ever hot roll steel is coated with? And what's the easiest way to remove that stuff if u have to remove it for painting? Can it just be scuffed and then painted?
pete- i did alot of body work and primed.. havent had a chance to paint it yet.. its been raining the last few days and my project car is outside.. what should i do??? sand down the primer- re prime - then paint?.. basically what im asking is - is my body work ruined due to it not being water proof?
I do live it at 400 after 320 hard blocks long as possible and finally blend any vacant scratch to smooth aut everything with only 3m red scotch pad ,but for high end show car 180 sounds very crazy for me even in door jam 🤐😬
Hey Pete question , you talk about doing door jams with basecoat mixed with clear coat as a single stage can i also do my dash like that I know I can't paint the car like that. 66 buick special? Jim
I, for the longest time, thought that wet sanding caused a smoother finish when compared to dry. For example I sanded my hood with 180 dry, 400 dry, then 600 wet... *eye roll* #themoreyouknow thanks Pete!
@d.i.y auto school. Hey Pete, if you see filler when blocking down at 180 grit, wouldn't you re spray the panel with some more 2K primer or just the spot i mean. Then block at 320 if the primer did the job covering the subtle low spots or high spots. Also if you see metal when blocking down a panel with 180 grit. Would it be ok to spray etch primer as as a spot cover then roughing up at 320 before spraying the 2K primer. Last, can you paint over putty? Does it have to be covered with 2k primer? or some type of surfacer? I didnt hear you cover that in the video.
Hello I would like to know how come my primer looks spotty no mather if I turn up or turn down .I have been painting my 2005 mustang since October of last year I am so darn tired lol my hands hurt and I've had so many paint jobs on my car but I just can't be fine with my out come so now went to bar metal and have already done the proxy primer and now have primer and it is still no good enough for me I need to learn something lol not sure if its the sand paper
Great video. Just a question isnt it harmful to sand with no gloves? Dont all those particles go through your skin and nose into your body? Must be pretty toxic. Just asking as an amateur.
he just said that 320 is paint ready. that should answer your question. you could go higher I hear if your spraying metallics. but i dont really dont see to much of a difference in 400 and 320. your just gonna have to make a decision. 600 seems to fine to me. but again if your spraying metallics maybe go 600 so the chips dont lay in the grooves weird.
@@6655nico have you painted alot with 800 grit? Lotta people say not to paint over 320. After I blocked my truck down at 320. It really was much work to skim over it with 500. Which is where i left it at. but its to cold for me to garage paint right now. So ill have to wait till Spring.

Very good video Pete very concise and to the point!
Thanks for the tips. I just primed my hood lastnight is it normal to have a little primer residue when you rub your hand across it?
Keep those Tech Tips coming my Friend Pete!!!! Do you use the bigger blocks to sand when you can????
Pete i used a DA and an interface pad with 320 for my primer sanding. It turned out good. Is this a decent alternative?
I was thinking about using 400 dry
Straight too the point. Love the vids!
Thats Pete, I'm getting off my f#ucking arse and getting into painting my car, thanks for the tips and the motivation, much appreciated
Again Petes right, great video again Pete. Thanks mate.
Great presentation. Keep up the great videos Pete!
Thanks, you answered my question about type of sand paper prior to paint.

Stupid question: I just bought a 4 banger little race car with body damage. Should I bondo and try to pull dents to bondo or leave it alone ?
But you are correct Pete..the finer grit you go the less adhesion for the paint to stick...good job man..!!
Hey Pete, quick question: do ever find it necessary to throw a guide coat between 180 & 320?
Flannel Nemesis in my opinion guide coat ever step..... then youl know it's sanded
Thank you, this video helps out big time.

, thank you so much for this interesting video.
Why not use orbital sanders? Do they just take off too much? Leave streaks and gouges?
Thanks, Pete for the tips!
Great video-all of them. Can you post the equal grit dry to wet. I know you said it 59 times but I cant rember
i like
600 wet
400 dry hand or
320 DA
prevents any scratches showing through paint

Hi Pete... are you and Minnie still planning to move to Moab? Haven't seen anything lately? What's going on?
Fantastic video brother!
Can you please tell me where to get those rolls if sandpaper and the name, thank you love all your videos very very helpful
Search the term sanding file rolls at your favorite supplier. I use Smart brand, they are a good quality for the value line.
Great work Pete.
Can I use one of those white paper masks if I am sanding rusty metal?
love the energy
Did you finally move from texas yet?
Great tips!
And then after that 320 dry I think you use a sealer before base don't you Pete?
Great show!!
Thanks Pete, nice tech tips.
what if I sand through the primer on a body line?
Thanks Pete great video.
How long before you can basecoat?
thanks for the video and advice
