Much simpler this way! Thanks! Seems like Pete didn’t get angry until Minnie showed up. She only corrected him since he said “1000” but she was right that he meant “1500”. It’s a lot of work to get along.
3m says the same thing about the perfect it rubbing compound. When you really only need the pefect it 3 if you finish with 3000. I use 2000 by hand then 3000 and an orbital polisher. Once i used an orbital polisher properly i will never go back to rotary buffer. Great video brother.
Thanks to you and Minnie for taking the time and effort to create the videos. I have learned a ton and have had fun doing it. It is great when I can laugh and learn at the same time. Semper Fi, USMC.
hey Pete ( My Friend Pete ) Thanks for another great video. I am looking for a short throw DA sander after watching your video with no luck. what is the model of the one you are using in the video?
I’ve saw people use a hundred steps to get the same results you got because 3m said they had to, common sense goes a long way in life, keep em coming, learning some shit from your videos
Pete love you tutorials you teach us so much and I really have learned the proper way of restoring my wife's dads car who sadly passed away last year I'm watching you from Ireland can't wait to see more of your videos thanks pete for spending your time showing me and other people your knowledge
Great vid. Best of both worlds. Doing it right while saving money. I came across your page little over a year ago and gave me insight and knowledge to start my on restore of my 65 c10. Keep up the great work on these vids. I'm definitely taken notes
Great video Pete. I was a bodyman for twenty years and quit in 1996. I can't count the hours I spent buffing in the old days. It sure would of been nice to have those pads. As an ex bodyman I love your videos. You do things things the old school way but are smart enough to try something new like those pads. Keep up the good work!
I've been in the body work business for over 30 yrs, buffing cars the old fashioned way, found out about this 3000 DA system 2 yrs ago.Wish I knew about this 15 yrs ago.
I wetsanded my freshly painted clearcoat with a da sander 2000 grit. I made sure the pad and the paint was very clean, but still i get pigtails in the clearcoat after i sanded it. How come?
I'm in the same boat with pigtails still showing up after dry and not so much after wet but still there using finishing film discs! With trizact I didn't get any. I am now going back over my car trying these mirka abralon assuming they're like trizact just a lot cheaper and I'm going to try damp sanding with 8mm orbit orbital! 🤞🤞I'll try and give feed back here and or if you found the trick by all means share buddy haha! A friend of Pete's is a friend of mine! 😅😎🤘
@@1982mattd I found a sollution against the pigtails. Have a microfiber at hand, and dry sand for maybe 10 seconds, then put the microfiber towel agains the sanding disc while running the machine to clean the disc. Then wipe of the panel with the same microfiber towel and repeat the process
Great video. Back in the day, cutting the finish 2K coat with a sponge pad and cutting compound reduced the gloss of the final coat. The finish was better when you bumped up the pressure on the gun and painted the panel where it was flat without orange peel and just left it. Swirl marks were avoided by using a cutting compound without any Ammonia. Technology has come a long way.
Ive used those wool pads after 3000 sanding it seems I still get swirling that pops up down the road that I have to correct with a foam pad. Maybe im using the wrong wool pad or being to aggressive with it when im buffing. Looks great Pete!!!!
Hey Pete. Lots of respect from me. Question. You say plain clean water when sanding but lots of other people uses a few drops of dish soap in the water. Would you recomend that or not? Does it contaminate the surface. Love your videos. I have learned alot.
John Christiansen having watched another video of Pete wet sanding and buffing..... if you put in washing liquid your paper just glades...... and doesnt grip meaning your doing it twice .... pete explained this in another vid
Hey Pete, What model # is that Hutchins sander? I'm looking to get a replacement. Thank you very much for your time in putting out awesome videos! (Diana, Texas.)
Hello Pete and Mini i enjoy your videos. i have a 1972 ss blue original paint car. how would you recomend polishing it,the paint is in great condition i just dont want to remove any paint if i dont have to. thank you
I would use a cleaning wax. It has very fine abrasive to remove any surface contamination. Use it like a wax, by hand. You may also consider a clay bar first if you can actually feel that the paint is not smooth. Clay bars do not remove paint. The cleaning wax will make the paint surface clean and somewhat protected. If you do those 2 steps you may consider a sealant to protect the finish. There are lots of choices. I have used Mirror Glaze 21 Synthetic Sealant. It is a good product to use after the 2 previous steps. Pete is the man!!!
Damn my friend Pete!!!! What a tip cause I've always went in steps .just because it said to. I trust in what you say. I've noticed that when I bitch and holler. The job is better but my wife left me. Damn wish I would've learned that sooner . I mean I sure miss her
Question Hard to find "short Throw sanders " when I google. but see some mentioned as 5 mm throw, What make sander do you use so I can see what the throw is/ Thx
Great tutorial but like Minnie said you did say use 1500 not 1000 then onto 3000.... you said it in the beginning when talking about the sanding pad with the holes in it. Either way you do really nice work and am a subscriber
What do you recommend I do IF my vehicle has all the windows and engine in it? Should I just tape them off or what? And how many times do you go over with the buffer?
Yes, tape them off with a quality automotive refinish masking tape and masking paper if you do not want to disassemble your vehicle. You go over the panel as many times as it takes to remove the 3000 grit haze. Probably 2 times. Then clean the panel with a clean cloth and water. Look it over. If you are satisfied then you are done! On dark colors a blue 3M foam pad and Microfinishing polish will take the finish to the next level of deep shine. Pete is the man!!!
Hey Sir, do you think I should use a single stage paint or could I do a base and clear coat on a semi truck. I have never painted a vehicle before and plan on doing truck in sections. Painting will be completed outside in the yard. Watching your videos and trying to learn. Thanks for helpful shows.
I noticed that you didn't wash the GTO after polishing with the 3000 polishing pad and was wondering if there is a chance of getting fine scratches or is there no grit in the removed clear.
Pete do you find that the DA sanding leaves the finish slightly grainy versus the hand sanding? I'm talking about after it is buffed out using each method.
@@diyautoschool Pete, thanks for your response. I'm asking if you can notice a difference in the finish after the car is buffed out using the da finish method versus hand sanding with up to 2,000 or finer and then buffing. The cars that I have seen buffed out using the da method seem to have a slightly grainy texture in them versus the hand sanded ones. Thanks
@@jimk7882 Grainy texture of the paint is probably orange peel. If you do not use a hand block and the 1500 to flatten the clear it will have orange peel. The foam pad and DA with 1500 will follow the orange peel. The block with 1500 by hand will flatten it out. Then the 3000 on the DA is only used to remove the 1500 scratches, leaving a 1/3 polished/ buffed surface. The 3000 is part sanding and part buffing process.
The trouble with 3M products is you can't find anything bad to say about them. I've used their stuff for 30+ years and have never thought to myself that was crap, expensive yes but you sure get what you pay for.
The interface pad has a thick foam baking. That coupled with the foam of the actual 3000 pad reduces the pressure on the corners and edges. If to look back to the video when he is showing the difference in the fender and roof before buffing, you will notice the edges and sharp body lines have not been sanded with the 1500. The front fender top body line is a perfect example of his skill. Not sanded on the sharp edges. That leaves plenty of clear for the 3000 and buffer to work with.

What is the brand of the DA sander using for sanding with 3000 grit sand paper?
Great DIY, what brand polisher are you using to buff?
I've always wondered why they called it color sanding when you are sanding the clear coat. Is it a leftover from the days of single stage paint jobs?
Back in the 70-80's we'd call it Wet Sanding. LOL I've changed my terminology in the last few years. LOL
