I guess Chris gets lumped into the grunge category of vocalists, but his voice is just pure soul. That rough, soaring bluesy quality really comes through on this tune.
The cello responds to Chris's lyric with descending phrases and somber tones that emphasize the emotion in the vocal. He does it with subtlety and discretion, always complimenting and never getting in the way. Listen to the one lonely note that he plucks after Chris sings the word "backyard."
I had the privilege of seeing Chris Cornell about 3 or 4 months before his death in Charleston SC. It was just him and a phenomenal cello player from N.Carolina. His singing was flawless and soulful. Favorite singer.
I missed this show by one day. I had to go out to Arizona for work and couldn't get home a day early. I was SO MAD and then.. Sigh. I would have loved to see that show
I hear ya, I live in MN and me and my buddy were gonna go see him in IA, but life happened and we couldn't get there, we figured we would catch him the next time around... 😔😔😔
I saw him the beginning of that tour July 2016 with my daughter! Hands down the best concert ever. And the cello player was there also. Cried through that concert. Tears of joy
Honestly its hard for me to even hear the instruments past his vocals. I honestly get choked up listening to this and realizing Chris is no longer with us. Such a sad loss. Gone but never forgotten.
Saw him with Soundgarden at Carolina Rebellion 2 weeks before he died. Never thought I'd ever get a chance to see him live and I finally did and it was an amazing show. Of all the celebrity deaths over the years his was the only one that really got to me. Just seeing him before I think was a big reason why but it makes that show for me that much more special and memorable. RIP Chris Cornell 😢 🙏 💔
Aloha from Seattle! I've long lived in the Seattle area (ala Chris Cornell), although I'm originally from Ireland (ala Sinead O'Conner). So, you can imagine this song hits home for me. Gorgeous version of a timeless classic. So much heart. From Prince, to Sinead, to Cornell. Beautiful song.
As you and your viewers know, this song was written by PRINCE who was a big fan of Chris (among many artists). Prince has said he wrote the song on guitar but the label didn't want him releasing an acoustic version. They didn't think it would be marketable. Prince wanted O'Connor to release it because of her voice. But he continued to find a Rock band that could release a quality acoustic cover. No doubt Chris achieved that.
The first time I heard Chris I was 16 and the song was Soundgarden's "Jesus Christ Pose". Instantly in love and proceeded to collect anything I could to do with the band. Cd's, t-shirts, stickers, posters, etc. They helped me immensely through my emerging bipolar that started as suicidal depression. I'm so thankful that teenage me had no way of knowing how he died...
RIP Chris Cornell. RIP Prince. If I remember correctly Prince wrote this about his housekeeper that had to move away to take care of a sick family member and he turned it into a love song.
I had many "idols" throughout my life: Cohen, Prince, Bowie, Chester, Buckley, Staley... But Chris... When he died, a part of my youth went with him. How it hurts to hear your voice these days. A handsome, talented guy, with a beautiful family, gave in to a cursed disease that plagues our century, very sad :(
It's always struck me how little Chris's expressions and body expose any emotion at all but how much the sound that comes out is so incredibly emotional. It's like his body has given up all it's feeling and let the voice expose all of it.
Celebrity/musician deaths generally don’t have much effect on me, but his destroyed me. Chris was hands down one of the best singers, musicians and songwriters of all time.
Chills... chicken skin ... maybe a tear... and AM still here this man RIP was a bless for rock and roll, a voice that can eco for the infinite of space-time and beyond!
This performance makes me tear up every time i see/hear it. As a fellow singer, Chris had a huge influence on me. Whether he's rockin out and hitting those powerful high notes, or doing something mellow like this, he was always in control of his voice. "Celebrity" deaths have never been a concern of mine, but his passing was rough for me.
RIP Chris. I was literally a week away from getting to see him at Rocklahoma. They did an amazing tribute to him with a spotlight of stool and a microphone in the middle of the stage while playing this song. They had clips of him playing on the jumbotrons. It was an amazing moment to be a part of.
Man I had tickets to Rock on the Range and he died the day we were set to leave, never got that chance to see him play! I miss that man and never met him
The thing I like the most about people, vocal coaches, musicians...etc reacting to Chris's "nothing compares to you" is that you don't see them pausing for at least two minutes and they all are on the verge of crying like a baby.... Yeah that's how great the mighty Chris was, a Vocal God. If only you knew how much you are missed
I still love "I am the highway ", but having Chris singing a Prince song.... too bad they never shared a stage. Maybe the are now. Chris and Audioslave kept me going when a girl I loved and a family member had both taken their own lives and for a few months my stone stoic face had the addition of tears ever present welling up over my eyes. To make it worse I had to keep the girl I loved, one had accused the other of actually killing her. I knew both and I have known killers in my life. It was drunken jealousy that was threatening another's life. So I got a plan together and kept trouble from both of their grasps by playing the deputies to protect them from themselves. I would go home every night and listen to Chris and I understand more now than ever. He showed true and open passion with his voice and he could pull off any style of vocals he chose.

There are two lines in the lyrics that for whatever reason puts a lump in my throat. Like a bird without a song - I can put my arm around any girl I choose, but it just reminds me of you. Those lines get me every time

RIP Chris Cornell. You're right this was a heavy one to start with he was definitely a voice of our lifetime being able to sing in every octave but having very much the presents of being very generous on stage and realizing that the other musicians out of the musicianship he felt to honor them was something in him.
such a timeless track. Prince once again proving his ability to write an absolutely timeless, barrier-breaking song. I humbly request acoustic tracks by City and Colour. My fellow Canadian Dallas Green front-runs it, who is also known for his support vocals in the punk/metal group Alexisonfire from the early 2000s. City and Colour has a large catalogue already, but the singles from their first few albums are incredibly peared down acoustic hook-bombs, with unforgettably pure vocal performances. Try the song Save Your Scissors, or Comin' Home, or Sleeping Sickness. They are definitely emotional, with equal pull and push, burying and lifting

Wow, Chris was so great. I saw him live 2 weeks before he died in Charlotte, was a great show with Soundgarden, had no idea what was to come. And RIP to Prince too, it is so wild to realize you live in a world where he's gone too. Some powerful stuff
His voice is something else
Wow, Chris was so great. I saw him live 2 weeks before he died in Charlotte, was a great show with Soundgarden, had no idea what was to come. And RIP to Prince too, it is so wild to realize you live in a world where he's gone too. Both were great writers and creators, while Chris was also one of the world's greatest singers, Prince was one of the world's greatest (and underrated only by those who never saw him play) guitar players of all time. The world is diminished without these legends...
Suggestion for acoustic would be Sevendust's Wait, it is pretty powerful stuff too.
My generation. Man I cried when he died. I miss him so much. Now this song just makes me think he's singing it to us. SO tragic. RIP
Learned this version just now. Such a moving song no matter who does it.
