We're stuck indoors for at least a few weeks.
If we're healthy enough to be bored, we've got an opportunity: get a head start on the drums.
This week's video is "how to stop sounding like a beginner", but that's a misnomer.
At every point up to the present, I could use the material in this video. After graduating from music school, when I was playing professionally, throughout my teaching arc. The basics never get less important.
But what are the basics?
Maybe it's stick control and coordination exercises. And if you've got years to inch your way up the skill ladder, those resources are great.
But what if we used the quarantine as a "forcing function"? What if we "parkinsoned" ourselves?
(Parkinson's law states that a task will swell in size and complexity to fill the time you allot to it.)
Short deadlines focus the mind. If you've got only 90 days to set fire to your "beginner" ships, and chart a new course, you now no longer have the luxury of focusing on the trivial many things. You have to choose the highest-leverage few.
I've been like a broken record about this, but I believe those few are playing clean (or kit control), feel (which includes time), and improvisation.
Those are the "necessary and sufficient" skills of "high level drummers".
They're necessary, because you don't find any greats without them.
They're sufficient because they're the only skills greats have in common.
(Try telling me Will Champion and Tony Royster play the same type of solo. Or that either of them isn't great.)
Great - so we focus on those 3 things. But how?
Well...video.
Please enjoy:) Видеоклипы
This would be a hell of a lot better of you didnt put all the cutscenes in there where you demonstrate how awful some guys sound and how great others are.
It helped me understand what he was talking about
For sure helped me out better understand wut exactly he was talking bout.. although on a lot of ‘em, i couldnt tell much a difference between the two- aweful/professional soundin clips...
LoL
@@Brandonweisinger Same. I didn't think the clips that were to sound "wrong", seemed that bad haha
@@Brandonweisinger there's maybe one beginner clip that I could not tell belonged in the beginner section. If you actually want to stop sounding like a beginner you need to tell the difference.
I don't agree..i loved those the best cause its self debasing comedy...kept it entertaining and we learn!
"We've only got 90 days tops." Oh, the good ol' days.

In 40 years of playing in dozens of bands!!
No one has EVER asked me to play more/busier!! No band member, engineer or producer!!
No one has ever asked me to play a solo!!
Plenty of engineers and producers have asked me to play less!! Dozens of times I've been asked to leave ghost notes out, even though I play them well!!
If you want to get the gig as a drummer!! The drummer I'd aim to be as good as is.................Ringo Starr!!
There is a very good reason why he is Gregg Bissonete's hero!!
He is the epitome of "musical!!" drumming!!
I really feel for new, younger drummers. Who get to watch all these perfectly eq'd drums, played by monster technical drummers on you tube and feel they have to be able to do the same!!
They don't!! Just grab a few Beatles albums and play along!!
word ♥
in my opinion, the beatles are not a good example of the drums. i have nothing against them, its just that they are so simple that if you stick to playing them, you wont know how to improve. I would just say keep practicing to any music you like!
@@PEP. Of course drummers should study all the greats, and aim to become as technically proficient as possible. Indeed some styles of music. Prog Rock, Jazz etc require extremely high levels of technique. My comment was mainly aimed at young/new drummers who I feel should get together with other musicians and make music as soon as possible and not feel they need to be some monster drummer to do so.
I do get where you're coming from tho.
Thanks for the comment.
well said
I love playing drums and I hate the Beatles. Most over-rated band ever.
In short: Beginner thinks "I hope this note goes here" and pro thinks "I'm putting this note here whether it wants to or not". Confidence.
I'm always entertained by these drum instruction videos where the teacher tries to play like a beginner. They can't do it! So to all you beginners out there, relish in the fact that no pro level drummer can play like you!
David O I’m happy?
It's almost like you can hear the muscle tension in the beginner clips.
And the rigid arm swings
there's also that waaaaay too loose feeling. not saying i'm not a beginner in some regards
You can even feel it physically
Incorrect muscle tension is a killer just as an over-tightened fan belt wears things out.
Muscle tension is what i feel when i hear the name coldplay. Even more so with ed sheeren. Thats a muscle spasm that cant be controlled!
Haha man I'm super nervous to see a video completely roasting me at the drums, but I definitely deserve it! I saw another video of yours where you talked about the connection between limbs as being one of the biggest components of sounding less terrible. That's been a super helpful approach! That is, when I'm not trying and failing miserably to play Tigran's music.
Ah dang, the crossover I never expected. I love you man
Keep improving man. Love your vids

Hey 80/20 Drummer! I'm an aspiring Metal Drummer but I love your channel! I just did my first legit studio recording with other musicians (all way more experienced and talented than me) And used a lot of the stuff you taught in your videos about not worrying so much and it helped me playing and my ability to keep time.
Your channel is awesome!
Here at 7:00 you can see a man who has played the drums right for so long that he literally cannot play it wrong
I was thinking the same thing , I was like holy shit that actually sounds good
I've been playing for 43 years. There's always something to learn/re-learn/expand upon. This video is months' worth of lunches to consume and apply.
lol 7:00 is an excellent moment. The reaction is so genuine
I just read an interview in the last Tape Op with Patrick Carney where he said that when Dan Auerbach came over to record the first Black Keys record, the drummer didn't show up so Patrick just ended up playing the drums on it even though he wasn't even a drummer lol. Within a year they got picked up by Fat Possum Records and were touring professionally. Perfect example of someone who learned exactly what they needed to sound good (and quickly).
These lessons have helped me in my career as a municipal water system operator and of course - with the ladies.
drummers get chicks? maybe I should quit guitar and learn drums?

Thank you! Came down here just to ask for the Kashmir clip. You know what the people want.
Lmao you featured charles cornell
that is a great cover, however it seems like modern drummers covering it play only one bass quarter note when Bonham mostly played two 16th notes at the first of every measure. To me it sounds far more aggressive.
6:59 When you try to do it wrong but your body doesnt let you get out of the pocket.
Dynamic - Timing - Consistence. If you got this, you're definitely a good drummer.
A lot of what you're telling here can also be heard from the mouth of Benny Greb in his latest DVD, The Art and Science of Groove, and you're legit giving this content out for free. More power to you, Nate!
a guitar player who has an old drummer soul inside of him appreciated this video!
I made a bad move and decided to change the heads on my snare during this self-imposed house arrest. And while changing the heads, two of the tension rod casings broke. It was a cheap snare so I can't complain, however I'm going to complain because I don't have a working snare drum anymore.
Sean LaMontagne 😢😢
Now that is a sad story. Make a happy one out of it. Take your time to decide on what kind of snare sound you want and find out what snare you want.
I replaced my snare wires, and the snare strap on one of the sides broke, had to put it first and it is now firmly held by duck tape, not gonna lie, it sounds decent
Tons of people getting rid of gear on craigslist right now, strike while the iron is hot!
Lots of gr8 sales always @ musician's friend or event (urk!) guitar center - You're gonna want to ask yourself: " wood? steel? brass? piccolo? deep? medium?" PDP, Mapex and even Yamaha all have great (and cheap!) entry-level snare drums for sale. You can also (buyer beware!) find gr8 deals on ebay, but watch seller reviews!
Love the section at 19:05.. five times.. Very reminiscent of my favorite drumming in the world.. Southern India.. Those drummers can subdivide subdivisions on incredible levels.. and the pulse never changes (it just feels that way).. Thanks as always
Dude, I literally started learning the drums last month but this video gave me confidence to progress with my studies! Thanks!
When this dude drums and looks at the camera I can see the kids in his basement through the eyes.
Your videos has helped me a ton with my rhythm guitar chops. Well, my musicality in general.
Using Patrick Carney as an example for a non-beginner drummer is just fantastic! He does have a unique sound, shit loads of groove and is good in studio; But he's really all over the place in tempo. Just adding that Black Keys are my favourite band and I want too sound like them one day.
6:59 that lowfy beat thouuuu
Solon infinity honestly he starts in on that and I’m like this lowkey slaps brah
6:57 Haha. The amount of times I have walked myself into that same trap when teaching.
my teacher, when i was taking lessons, would do the same thing, always said it's harder to play bad when you've been playing right for so long
This is damn useful for ANY instrument.
The key to all of this is LISTENING.
Beginners can play alone, pros can play together.
And that one tip about putting the metronome between beats - holy hell that's going to change my life!
Always great to see you using Steve Lyman clips. Been following him for almost 2 years and he just keeps blowing my mind. Super sick stuff he's doing
I love that I literally have no idea who any of these referenced drummers are.
I love that you brought up this simple beat for beginners to work on getting tight and consistent 6:28. 30 years ago, when I was giving lessons, this was one of the first things I taught a new drummer. Then when they had that tight and consistent, I would bring in my band mates and we'd play Living After Midnight with them In the music store, and they would light up. One kid was 4 or 5 and I found out through his brother years later he stayed with music and picked up different instruments as well. It can't all be rudiments :)
That smile and reaction to the groove at 7:02 is literally the reason I have liked this video and subscribed. I don't even play drums, but I enjoy this no bull-crap way of teaching thoroughly.
Thanks for your videos, this is exactly what I needed. I'm 6 weeks into learning drums and this one was perfect.
Maaaaan, that Original Led Zeppelin tune versus the cover.... Jon Bonham was a beast!!!! You couldn't possibly sound any better.
Amazing video, thanks so much!
Thank you for your great vids Bro! You are growing on me I hit “like” before I even watch because I know it’s gonna “kick!”
So good man!! Thank you for your time in this channel, it's been helping me to learn to play better for the church!❤🙌☝️
There are a lot of lessons in this video that apply to a lot more than the drums alone. Many of these same principles can be adapted to other instruments (piano comes prominently to mind) and even other pursuits. Well done!
Thank you for all the contemplation about drumming. Helps expand the consciousness on our instrument! great content!
I was listening to "Deacon Blues" on my way to work and thinking how its so pocket and simple it is. Straight groove with some fills, serves the song and it is amazing.
Havent seen one of your videos in a minute. Your video and editin style is more high energy now. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for all the concepts, wisdom and huge amount of practice material presented here. A lot of people are probably missing all the nuances in your wise and humorous presentation. Love your channel and style! Highly recommendable over 21 minutes.... Adios!!!
I’m so happy Patrick Carney is the drummer you referenced. He’s the reason I’m starting.
Great principles! You've identified some things that are hard to pinpoint. It's really good to see where to focus energies.
Charles Cornell is an amazing player I love him. I love you too Nate huge fan of your channel. Keep up the good work and thank you!
The "stay at home situation" lasted longer than 90 days. It was supposed to be a " two week shutdown". Great video as always brother!

Great Video! Thank you. Definitely opened my brain a bit to technique I need to learn . Cool stuff thanks bro✌️
Loving this lesson dude.. u just scored ya a new fan, for sure! Thnks Bro.. this was JUST what I needed to see/learn (for yrs. now!)
😋👍🏼
His 'bad feel' is 'every drummer I've played bass guitar with'.
One thing, he doesn't say which although obvious, is worth a mention is, us drummers who play another instrument soon experience what they either do or don't want to hear the drummer do during any performance. Most of us want a solid tidy punchy beat with proper backbeats, and as few fills and ghost notes as possible. I soon learned to clean up my playing, when trying to groove with beginner type drummers. We learn just as much from the shonky players, when we're either watching them or gigging with them. Unconfident players hate space, and love a racket to hide away in. That applies to the whole ensemble.
Rowan. Best drum teacher on RUclips. You're the real deal, and a fantastic teacher (coming from a teacher myself). Atkinson. Thanks for all your videos, love you dude!
Rowan's laughing all the way to the bank. The joke's on us.
One of the insights I picked up over the years of recording engineering was that getting great drum sounds in the studio isn't about what drums or mics or room or processing you use necessarily, although they are all important, it starts with the player and exactly the idea you call kit control. Producing good sounds on the instrument is inherent to the individual drummer and can't really be separated from their skill at keeping time or performing their role in the music.
Thank you.
Getting into drumming agian. Bought an electric kit (I know it's a sin lol) this video gave me confidence again!
Omg Charles Cornell. Yes someone sees his greatness
This video is waaaay more helpful than I expected it to be, thanks man :)
Good lesson. One thing I take away from this video thought you might not actually be saying it, is that the best thing for a drummer to do is get to know their drums. Get the feel. Don't be afraid to experiment, but keep the time and rhythm. I've heard drumming that was more painful to my ears than screeching. You want to get up and get them off and take over. But to be good you need to know your drums and let yourself out on them. I hope I'm saying this right if anyone knows what I mean.
Minnesota just issued it’s “shed in place” executive order.
Lol!
I tell you what, my governor best not ban drumming cuz the sound waves cause coronavirus to spread faster or some such chit
I've watched a number of drum lessons for beginners, and the only thing I've learned so far is the difference between a snare drum and bass drum.
I just graduated from high school. I am now teaching my band teacher how to play the drums and teach the upcoming percussionists how to play, through text. Its so difficult to do without being there. But this is helping me and making me sound smarter and better! Now I am a working drummer looking to get my name out there. I've played at Woodtick fest in Michigan for 2 years in a row, (was supposed to play this year but it cancelled😖) played at pubs and bar and grills with larger bands. I also write music and want to become the next band teacher of my school. I just realized I have been spitting my life at you guys 🤣. I love music and drums and band. I'm sorry 😶. But yeah it's helping my teacher.
The example you did between the hats kick and floor tom was very tasty. Thanks for the vid.
Wow. That was super-helpful. Thanks.
6:58 it's not wrong, it's drunk feel groove
I did a lot of studio work programming drums and keeping the feel of the band together is something I've explored in a fair amount of depth. The lazy thing would be to quantize all the parts. But the reality is that there is a region, an area of compromise, where the drums sound best and glues everything together. It's kind of the average of where everybody else is in relation to the beat.
Also, love the offbeat metronome exercises, great for straightening out subdivisions.
Hello Nate, sending greetings from the Czech Republic! Your videos have always a specific idea, style and taste. And, they are funny! That is what we need the most in these times. Keep it up! (I should not be saying "good job".... just remember Whiplash…)
I've yet to hear a well trained drummer be able to pull off sounding like a beginner. It's too hard to emulate inconsistency. Both in the timing, and in the attack....it's rough.
I think the drummer from The Strokes does a good job of this; riding the line of blending with the band while maintaining a hint a naive drumming. It won't work for all styles of music but really works in the garage band style. Meg from the White Stripes is another example, though her playing sounds quite a bit more naive; but on purpose
Yeah, after a point what you're doing is learning how not to play that way - you can't really go back. when I took lessons from Mike Heller sometimes he would have to like "simulate" a mistake.
Never thought about it, it's kinda true in all things, when an adult, or somewhat accomplished sketch artist tries to imitate a simple child's drawings, I can always tell .
06:58 that just sounded like the typical drunk beat that you hear everywhere now haha.
Awesome video as always! That tom beat sounds incredible!

I’ve been playing for 12 years but I think these are great tips to tighten and clean things up a bit.
6:35 I was expecting fortunate son to play 🤣
Thanks for the excellent vid, Nate. I have been in numerous ensembles over the years where we were playing "simultaneously", rather than locked in and tight with one another. Here is a "human metronome" idea. Stop the band during a rehearsal and suggest that the keyboard player and the sax player do two choruses together, slowly. Just the two of them. Politely suggest that they listen carefully to one another while they play and that they see if they can lock in with each other for these two choruses! Then suggest that you and the trumpet player do the same thing. Etc. only takes 10 minutes of rehearsal time. Instead of using your metronome, you can invite a bassist to your studio and practice locking in with each other. A lot of bands that are not TIGHT do not realize that they are merely playing simultaneously, with very little intention of listening to and trying to lock the heck in with one another!
Damn man - depending on your definition of "polite" that's some Terence Fletcher shit. (But I like it :P)
setting the metronome to every forth subdivision: I hate you, and I am now a subscriber. Thank god I have an electronic kit and won't subject the rest of my family to the horrors that will be me trying to get this right.
How to sound pro - play solidly and consistently on the beat, hopefully in the groove, have tight fills, and play dynamically and with an easy confidence that comes from playing correctly a lot. Nothing says pro like playing with confidence correctly - goes for any instrument!
Great video! Thanks and stay safe.
"Played so wrong that it's right" I love it
This video was just so damn funny and entertaining. Thanks for the inspiration to seize the moment in lockdown and emerge a better drummer.
