love hearing this concept teased out. i've kind of been doing this naturally to add vocab, but not as deliberately as you're describing. the recent videos have been excellent!

Great idea, I find I do this. Another one is to trade 8s or 16s with yourself, going between chops and a groove. The “chops” is basically the “matrix”, but the new lick can either be at the beginning of the 16, the middle, or the end. And I’ll do a set of “I’m making the beginning of the 16 the lick I want to introduce and improvising the rest” and I’ll do that for a while. Then switch to having the lick be in the “middle” of the 16 and improvising start and end, then having the lick be at the “end”

U know a teachers are good when they all say the same thing .. and say .. keep it simple .. start simple .. and work around those simple things.. and slowly. U realise .. everything is just a variant of that simple .. it's just that .. the real teachers say .. it's just SIMPLE .. while others say .. it's actually a complicated concept which is an off shoot of this idea that started of as an impossible... Buah..blah..yeesh .. boo.. haa..yush..sheesh..boom..hack..buah..blah..puke puke puke...and u go .. 😮..huh..😢.. oh that's so so so😮..
Ur a true teacher ...bless u Nate

I just practice a pattern over and over and over, until I can do it almost by accident. I also find that practicing many things each day vs. a few thing but for longer, seems more effective, giving my brain a 24 hour cycle to catch up.
