The script had circulated around Hollywood for like 10 years and took many forms. At one point, Sylvester Stallone was attached to it. But anyway, the version that eventually hit the screen was almost nothing like the original script.
It was a totally different script. Screenplays go through several rewrites before it actually gets made

Janet Jackson wasn't the only person the Wachowski Brothers asked to be the main character in "The Matrix".
Will Smith was approach to play Neo in "The Matrix" that ultimately want to Keanu Reeves. But Will turned it down because he didn't get the script like he couldn't comprehend what the story was about and it was weird to him. Even Jada tried to convince him to do the role but he was like "Nah".
Will to this day said he kicks himself every time he sees the movie.
But can you imagine Will as Neo and Janet as Trinity?!?!
That would be interesting to see.
Furthermore, The Matrix was stolen from Sophia Stewart, a black woman and the Wachowski Brothers, (now both "women") stole the script from her. It wasn't the first major movie stolen from her. The entire main cast should've been black. Aside from Morpheus, the Oracle is the only black woman in the film and un-ironically resembles Sophia Stewart.
