April Dannette I think Jack Slater was making a joke about the actor laurence fishburne who played in matrix as Morpheus and now in the Tina Turner movie as Ike. In matrix they had to choose a path to take that being a pill in the matrix. The red pill symbolizes Knowledge, freedom, and the brutal truths of reality. The blue pill symbolizes Security, happiness and the blissful ignorance of illusion. Still this is a serious matter about domestic violence in a relationship so I understand why his comment would be upsetting. Our family just suffered the lost of a loved one from domestic violence in April of this year. So domestic violence is a serious matter. I guess he was trying to lighten the mood but it didn’t help.

I'm glad they chose Angela for the role of Tina because she is an amazing actress (Yale School of Drama) and watching the film when I was a kid made me appreciate acting and respect Tina Turner. Till this day Angela Bassett is one of my favorite actors. I wouldn't have wanted someone who looked "more" like Tina, but was a mediocre actor because then the movie wouldn't have gotten the accolades it deserved. Like it or love it, both Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne did an excellent job portraying their characters.

It was '93 & still a pretty racist achievement to fulfill in the 'A' listers society of Hollywood. Halle Berry made history as the very first black actor to ever win one and you see what she did & the risky lengths she took in Monster's Ball to get it. She may as well had been having real sex as explicit as she got with Billy Bob Thornton in that movies sex scene. There's a lot of black actors have definitely deserved to win one but never have or ever will. That's why I don't really pay attention to the Oscars & their standards, it's just a popularity game & win more than anything else.

1st of all: you cannot "steal" a genre. One genre will birth another genre. Music does what everything does: EVOLVE, ADVANCE. One branch will split after branch. Rock isn't just "one" genre; it can be split into many different subdivisions and eras. So yea, there's _classic rock_ too. Rock itself emerged from and with genres that existed before. You cannot "invent" something that is based on something else. Rock was created, discovered - but not "invented".
2nd: who "created/invented" the genre is actually irrelevant. It does not change the fact that white ppl are more into Rock than black folks. The same black folks that exclude themselves from the Rock bc they don't like the genre are the same who show interest in Rock when it comes to stupid questions like _who "inveted" Rock music?"

Though the film took its story from Tina Turner's autobiography, I, Tina, it was determined to be only loosely based from the book, meaning certain events in the film were "fictionalized for dramatic purposes".[1] Examples of the fictionalized scenes include:
In the film, Tina's constant friend during the film, "Jackie" (played by Vanessa Bell Calloway), was put in the story. Tina Turner never had a friend named Jackie. The same friend is not only a member of The Ikettes but is also shown as the person who visits Tina in the hospital after her attempted suicide and later converts Tina to Nichiren Buddhism and chants "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" in front of the "Gohonzon". The "friend" apparently was a combination of friends from Turner's past, including members of the Ikettes and friends from her and Ike's entourage.
When Anna Mae Bullock sees Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm perform, Ike is shown as the front man. While the real-life Ike Turner was a band leader and organizer, he often had other performers, particularly male singers, fronting the band. Turner had stage fright. The original vocalist behind "Rocket 88", sung by Lawrence Fishburne as Ike in the movie, was Jackie Brenston.
During Anna Mae's first performance with Ike and the Kings of Rhythm, Ike is shown playing guitar. But Tina and Ike stated Tina sung after being given a microphone by the band's drummer and singing while Ike was playing piano during an intermission, rather than a live performance as indicated in the film though she later did front the band the night she began singing with them.
A reenactment shows Tina recording her first song, which is called "Tina's Wish", on the film's soundtrack. However, it's actually a re-recording Tina did of an old Ike and Tina song, "Make Me Over", from the Ike and Tina album, Nutbush City Limits, released in 1973. Tina's first recording (as "Little Ann") was actually singing background on one of Ike's songs, "Box Top".
During the scene where Ike and Tina are scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater in 1960, the bill has Martha and the Vandellas and Otis Redding as fellow headliners. In reality, Martha and the Vandellas hadn't formed yet, with several of them performing in another different vocal group called the Del-Phis, while Redding had yet to record his first single and was fronting several bands.
The film shows Tina giving birth to Ike's son who is named Craig but in reality, Craig Turner was Tina's child with another man, Raymond Hill. Ike and Tina did not have a child until 1960, when son Ronnie Turner was born and Ronnie would be their only child; Tina was pregnant with Ike's child in 1968 but allegedly had an abortion.
Like Vanessa Bell Calloway's character "Jackie", there was no "Fross", "Reggie" or "Spider" in Ike and Tina's private circle.
While Tina mentions that there were accounts of Ike being abusive to her, there was no incident where Ike pushed cake in Tina's face leading to a food fight in the diner. The reenactment is a dramatization of an incident Tina Turner herself accounted in her autobiography saying that while waiting for food, a waitress gave her cake. Though Tina said she hadn't ordered it, Ike told her to eat it.
In one scene, Tina calls her mother and tells her that she's heading over to her house in St. Louis to hide from Ike Turner. After Ike locates where Tina is, he berates her for trying to escape and makes it appear as if Ike had gotten word about what Tina was doing from her mother but in her memoirs, Tina Turner said that Ike knew where to seek her out.
When Ike and Tina are performing "Proud Mary", the timeline has it around 1968, with them opening for The Rolling Stones. Creedence Clearwater Revival's original version of "Proud Mary" was not released until January 1969, and Ike and Tina did not include the song in their act until 1970. Also, Ike and Tina opened for the Stones twice, in 1966 on their UK tour and in 1969 on their US tour.
The film alleges that Ike and Tina did not have a hit after "A Fool in Love" was released but, in truth, the duo had several hit singles between the release of "A Fool in Love" and "River Deep - Mountain High", including "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "I Idolize You", "Tra La La" and "Poor Fool".
The film's most infamous scene showcases "Ike" committing what looks like an act of rape on "Tina" after beating her up in the studio. Both Turners denied the rape scene reenacted in the film but Tina writes in her memoirs that after Ike would physically assault her, he would ask for sex stating Ike "instilled fear" in her.
In one scene, "Tina" is shown in a drugged state where her Ikettes noticed that she had attempted suicide, with the timeline being given as 1974. In real life, the incident occurred in 1969 before a show in Los Angeles and occurred shortly after Tina learned one of her friends and a member of the Ikettes was pregnant with Ike Turner's child.
When Tina Turner performs at the Ritz, the film has the timeline at 1983 and the host announces her arrival as her "debut solo performance", but Tina had first performed at the theater in 1981. Also proven to be inaccurate was Ike Turner's visit to the theater where he failed at silencing Tina with his gun. In truth, Ike Turner was never at the Ritz. In fact, Ike Turner had not been seen in public for years following his and Tina's divorce in 1978 and had remained in Los Angeles.
Though the film depicts Tina Turner as having addressed the courtroom to retain her stage name, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1996, she denies speaking up but said her lawyer had brought it up in court after Tina advised her lawyer to drop a potential financial support suit against Ike as their divorce court dragged on for a year.
The film states at the end that Private Dancer was Tina Turner's first solo album when it was actually her fifth solo album. Her previous four albums were Tina Turns the Country On!, Acid Queen, Rough, and Love Explosion. It also concluded that Ike Turner was still serving prison for drug possession; he had actually been released from jail after being granted parole in 1991.

Angela Bassett & Tina Turner's ancestors must've crossed paths somehow because (forget the hair & makeup) facially they look like sisters in that shot (6:40). Also, THANK GOD this movie was made in 1993 & not 2013. I don't even want to imagine someone like Beyonce being "in talks" to forcibly play this icon. This role belonged to Ms. Bassett & anytime I watch it, I come out feeling like I just conquered something.

Laurence and Angela were robbed of oscars . Laurence is so talented he can act and he sang ikes parts and I think his voice is better. it's too bad ike was such a head case wife beater bc he is credited with the first ever rock n roll song and he didn't get the propers he would have gotten if he wasn't such a monster to his wife. let's be honest white people stole rock n roll from black people which is a mix of the Blues and gospel. white people had the money and Polish to package it to the masses .
