  • www.bulkreefsupply.com/ At one time or another, we have all experienced a power outage and the headaches associated with it. After dealing with the bigger emergencies, it is time to think about saving the investment of your saltwater tank in its inhabitants. Depending on the length of the power outage, your corals and fish can be without oxygen, temperature control and the basic life support systems for several hours or several days. This episode of BRStv explains what you can do and what equipment you may need to help prepare your saltwater aquarium in the event of a power outage.

I live in Florida, and in the last few years hurricanes have become more and more frequent, which never really bothered me to much, but 6 months ago I started a salt water tank. Within afew months, I had already bought 2 more and the first worry I had after spending thousands of dollars was what would I do now if we lost power for days like we have during previous hurricanes. My main thought was acquiring a generator, although that would help with air pumps and lighting, my most recent issue has been temperature. My tank already fluctuates between 74-82 when I have power and AC, and cooler seemed extreme. I'll definitely look into all of the options you stated. Thanks again for all that you do and knowledge you provide

I use a deep cycle battery with the auto on switch. But instead of a power head I use a saltwater bilge pump made for a boat. The pump goes in the sump and moves about 500 gph from the sump to the tank. That way the skimmer overflow insures breaking the water surface and the water is flowing through the fuge and macro algea in the sump. I used the biggest battery i could find (for a boat trolling motor) and a trickle charger to keep it at max charge. It will run for 30 to 40 hours.

Dear BRS team, I cannot say enough about how incredibly informative and thorough your education series on reef keeping is, by far the best out there. If I had to recommend some study material for a friend who whats to start reef keeping, this will definitely be it! And what I like most, you guys obviously care for and love your pets.
On a side note, I noticed you had a vega colour on the nano! any chance you could do a review of this little bear? that would be awesome, thanks!

Heck yea, Plan now. Something worth mentioning for the generator solution is that most generators have about a 2~4 run time before they need to be refueled. I hear there are some with bigger tanks, but puts in for a long sleepless night when you got to refuel that puppy every couple hours. Been there, no fun.
Saved my lunch money for a Generac stand by genny. Yea, expensive, but worth the piece of mind. Runs off Natural gas, and will automatically start 1 minute after power failure. :)

Had a 14 hour power outage and was ill prepared. My only option was I took a car battery and hooked it up to an inverter with two outlets. Then I plugged the circulation pumps to it. That’s all I could do. Lost one anthias and the temperature dropped to 72 normally 79. The 9 other fish survived.

72 isnt bad, corals can live in 72 for a long time.. only reason you lost one would have been ph most likely

We had a 10 hour power outage not from a natural disaster but maitenance on power lines only option I had was to ad prime in the tank no deaths though so I guess it worked

get the generator hands down even if you take your tank(s) out of consideration it still is a good investment. Food that can be lost in a outage or even pipes busting in the cold.

Get to know other reef keepers in your area. If you don't trust anyone in your reef club perhaps a reliable aquarium maintenance company.(hint/plug if your in DE, MD, PA or NJ call us;)
Seriously last night we responded to an emergency call from an aquarium keeper who left his tank to visit the beach with his family. He left his house thermostat high, humidity tripped a GFCI, & he lost half his fish. Would have lost more & his wall to wall SPS had he not called us quickly to get things running.
