    After a bad storm this year where we lost power and I lost a bunch of corals, I got a permanent generator installed on the house not only for the tanks but also to keep the refrigerator and freezer running. Plus my wife almost lost her mind without internet and a place to charge her phone.

    I use APC Battery backups. Luckily in my neighborhood all lines are underground so we rarely have issues with power. If we do it's only for a few minutes. Even so the battery backup is for ease of mind, because even though it doesn't happen.... It doesn't mean it won't!

    I'm running a 1500watt inverter, there cleaner and quieter than a gen and kicks in when electric goes down in less than a second.

    I read some reviews on the vortec backup, that the battery goes to pot in 1 or 2 years. kind of expensive to be that short lived

    I have a eco tech vortech L1 and because if the recent hurricane that hit Florida supplies and power have been a major issue I do not have the battery back up from eco tech and I have been running a inverter from my car. The vortech pump will not turn on and neither will a few other accessories from the inverter. What can I do to keep my stock from dying I've been without power for 3 days any suggestions?

      I am sorry to hear about your struggles. Battery Powered Air Pumps can help keep the water oxygenated. At the moment we are out of stock but we do have some more on the way.

    I have a freshwater tank and In the winter the heater would be more important than the bubbler. What do i use for backup the heater

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  7 лет назад

      Heaters can use up energy quickly and therefore a single battery may not be worth the effort for more than a few hours. I would recommend a back up generator if you are in the situation where power loss and low temperatures can be problematic.

    *Save LOTS of money by getting a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) meant for computers. They're way cheaper, way more reliable, and can handle weeks without power even for a really large tank*
    You can plug everything into them too including LED lights. They draw such little power, it wont hurt the battery.

    I have vortech MP40QD and Gyre FX150 in 120 gallon display tank. If i only can buy 1 battery backup, which one u recommend? Vortech battery backup or Icecap battery backup? If i buy vortech, can i battery backup gyre together with vortech? If i buy icecap, can i battery backup vortech together gyre?

      @BulkReefSupply  8 лет назад +1

      +Vi Bibi Yes, you can run them both on the Ice Cap Battery Back-Up and I linked this below.

    Can any of these back up batteries connect to the aqamai kps?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  5 лет назад

      You can just plug the pump directly into a UPS battery back-up but it is not equipped with a battery port for use with an EcoTech Marine or Ice Cap brand battery.

    I have the battery back up connected to my m1, but when I do a test to make sure it turns on it don’t. Am I doing anything wrong?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  5 лет назад +1

      It is hard to diagnose with this information alone. The unit should automatically switch over to battery power when main power is lost.

    Are these compatible with AC pumps like Hydor Koralia?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  3 года назад

      Unfortunately, none of the battery backups are compatible with AC pumps.

    what about the filter media beneficial bacteria what's the best way to keep the filter media still good so I don't lose any beneficial bacteria

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  8 лет назад

      +Randon Testa Beneficial bacteria will need oxygenated water to stay alive as well. Anything in your tank should be fine with moving water. If you have separate filter that is offline for any extended period of time it is a good idea to clean it out thoroughly and let the bacteria "re-grow" inside the filter.

    what about heaters....they use a lot of power!

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  8 лет назад +1

      +Chris Wool If you have a power source that supplies enough power for your heater (generator) and powerheads together, it would be a good idea to keep your heater running as well.

    So water agitation can save the tank?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, moving water inside an aquarium improves gas exchange which then increases dissolved oxygen levels for the fish. Depleted oxygen levels is your biggest concern during a power outage when keeping an aquarium.

    Buy a generator with a digital inverter as its the only surefire way to avoid losing thousands of dollars of livestock.

  • @svtcontour

    most of these suggestions are useless. Dont buy any new gear like new pumps. Just get a decent sinewave battery backup which supplies 110v or 220V depending on where you live and supply backup power for your existing equipment (heaters may not apply due to the power they use). The amount of battery capacity in the battery backups (like ones from APC) and the wattage load of the tank will determine the run time during a failure. The battery backup will kick on automatically when needed and dont need anything switched. For long term backup - like anything more than a day, one may need to consider a generator.
