- brs.li/chloraminesro We continue our series on reverse osmosis basics with talking about chloramines. In this episode, we explain what chloramines are and how they are used to treat water and the simple solution to remove these from your water for both drinking and reef purposes.
Chloramine is Chlorine with the addition of ammonia. Chloramines have been used to disinfect municipal water systems for almost 100 years. With new regulations, chloramines have been used more and more by cities. The EPA now estimates that 1 in 5 cities is using chloramines to treat water.
Luckily, it is easy to remove these chloramines from your tap water and not add that additional ammonia to your reef tank. With the addition of catalytic activate carbon and special carbon blocks like the ChlorPlus from Pentek. These can be added to already existing RO systems or purchased as a completely new system.

That's a very good response. Especially when combined with the comments below about the life of the block and how to increase it. Answered my concerns and I agree that you're better safe than sorry. I guess it's worth changing the first carbon stage to a canister and upgrade to these carbon blocks at the next switch. You're certainly correct that the cost increase is minimal.
Very well done and helpful video. Thank you.
Great info, thanks!
Information that I have seen around reef keeping forums indicates that a good quality RO will remove the Chloramine as well as Chlorine. My RO/DI doesn't show traces of Amonia but not sure how minute they would be anyway. As I understand it, you run the risk of less DI life but the cartridges that you have on BRS only indicate that they'll remove Chloramine for 2,500 gallons in the smaller canisters. Too rich for me to keep replacing them.
You guys are taking all my money! Just got the BRS 6 Stage Chloramines DELUXE RO/DI System..2 kessil led a360 .. goose necks .. mp40 .. Lol . This hobby is getting expensive ..
Could we not just use a standard carbon block then add a small amount of Prime to our mixing tank prior to adding salt?
I LOVE my BRS RO/DI 6stage Deluxe unit :) :)
lol absolutely :)
BRS should start shipping to Australia... Totally untapped market here.
+BulkReefSupplyCom God knows we need some quality product. It's hard to even get decent basic gear like salt mix, testers, RODI, and additives. I can understand about the electrical gear though.
People say you can buy on eBay, but how do you know if you are getting the real item.
Id like a company, that I know and can trust.. See what I did there.
I wish I would have seen this video last week lol. I upgraded to the clorameans and added a canister to my 4 Stage but I added it to the end of the chain making me do some research hosing when I just could have added it to the front of the chain (I know silly) but there was no instructions on where to place my new filters. Maybe some instructions on the clorameans Page? Thanks to BRS tech support for helping me figure it all out. Also added the 150gpd upgrade at the same time to my 75gpd.
I have your 5 stage ro/di drinking water system with the 150 gal upgrade on it. What do you recommend I change/add?
+BulkReefSupplyCom I'm not a 'reefer,' though it seems like a delightful hobby, but here looking for a system to treat for chloramine in the water I drink from the city's water supply. Which of your RO/DI systems would be best for that purpose?
Is the BRS 5 Stage Water Saver PLUS RO/DI System - 150GPD I purchased from you able to remove chloramines? Is the chloramine in tap water a new discovery?
B
Can these be used for drinking water also?
They do fit most standards 10" x 2.5" inch filter canisters.
@bulkreefsupplycom will there be an update video on the tank you guys setup for your how to setup videos?
What do you recommend if you are not on city water and on a well?
Thank you so much, I guess I'll have to start checking my actual water pressure. I'm very excited about the possibilities here.
