    I've been fishing this rig for 2 decades, only difference is... I use a belly-weighted hook on the main fluke. When jerking they behave almost the same, but on pauses the weighted fluke sinks deeper. If I catch fish on the weighted bait exclusively then I'll change both to weighted - if the light/top bait then I'll remove the weighted option. Usually they both produces. Great video Matt.

      @@stpbasss3773 The pros have been using this method for years, believe it or not. Generally referred to as the "Double Fluke Rig". I know Scott Martin has a video talking about it. He fishes his weightless, like most do. I normally fish mine with one weighted and one unweighted yet I keep a unweighted version on the deck in the fall for following up on topwater strikes that were missed. Deadly! This is also a nice winter bass bait.

    I used to watch Roland Martin and Bill dance back in the late 90s early 2000s. I learned so much from them. You are now my go to on RUclips. Very helpful pointer about switching up the rigging for the front and rear fluke; making the front swim straight while rear dives down 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

    Tactical,
    Been watching your vids for a longtime. Have helped me out so much. Went out last week, had fish blowing up all over throughout the day. Just so HARD to get a bite. The bait is so small. Threadfin and silversides no bigger than an inch. Fished a fluke and got two solid fish. Action all day just hard to get bit. Watched this video during the week and went back yesterday with the double fluke rig. BOYYYY, did it make a difference. Lost a handful, but got more than 5 times than the previous week and had multiple doubles. Fishing 5 Pound!!! (light line and downsizing everything a must, these fish are so smart, have had everything thrown at them all summer long) ... Plain and simple this rig will OUTFISH the single fluke when you have small bait and picky non-biting fish around you. Thanks again Tactical Bassin.

    Great video!! Been using the Donkey rog here on Table Rock for awhile with one modification because of the clear water needing lighter line.... use a #1, 1/0 or 2/0 circle hook and just nose hook the fluke. Much better hookup ratio on light line rather than using Texas rig EWG hook. Circle hooks are surprisingly rather weedless when used like this. On this light donkey mod, use 12# braid mainline and 10# mono drop lines on spinning reel. Can throw 3.5" double flukes w ease.

    That depth difference is key. I've also tried changing both the size and colour of the flukes. For smallmouth here up north, if the front is larger and higher than the back, the bites are about 50/50; but if the back fluke is larger and heavier, that percentage goes up to about 90/10 for the back. Smallmouth also tend to prefer the slightly darker and/or flashier/more glittery of the two if they're the same size and colour, including white/ghost. Just some interesting stuff I've discovered fishing the rig for 3 years on spinning gear.

      Can you use a boot tail fluke or just straight tail? Just wondering because I have some of both styles.

    • @proteusxavier9477
      @proteusxavier9477 4 года назад +1

      @@stpbasss3773 Great question! I've only ever used flat-tails since gliding is so important in a donkey rig, but my guess is that boot tails would stabilize the motion and significantly increase resistance making the syncronized fall look less natural. But you can always try one of each - just make the boot tail smaller for less resistance and see if it works!

    On the Louisiana Gulf coast we've been fishing a very similar rig for speckled trout and Redfish for decades. And yes, when they're schooling you'll catch two at a time; sometimes a Red and a speck. What we do is try two different lures, usually a plastic shrimp and a minnow, or two different colors. We always take note of which color or lure the fish are going for, and then just rig the second hook with that lure. When I saw this rig for bass a few years ago I just thought, now why didn't I think of that first. It works great! I also use the same technique for bass. I'll experiment with two different colors and sizes until they tell me what they want. I've even used this technique with two trick worms, mainly in the Summer and Spring swamp fishing down here, and they knock the fire out of it. Try it!

    Ok so I threw this today and I will say it looked amazing on retrieve however they wouldn't bite it. The bait they were blowing up on was literally like an inch to an inch and a half long. I had one two pounder look at it while swimming past it and didn't miss a beat in swimming. At this point we went back to the launch and got the spinning gear with 6lb test and found my dropshot worm bag with tiny flukes in it. We did this rig with the tiny flukes and caught two decent ones. This just shows how finicky they were. We used 1/O crappie hooks for the rig.

    1:44 - "Hmmm....maybe I should cast over by that surface feeding frenzy....." I love this rig. For single flukes I like to throw the KVD Caffeine Shad because of its weight/castability and its longer movements, for getting into more specific spots. For the double rig in more open water, I like the Zooms because as a pair they seem to flutter around more as they're lighter. Mini-chandelier rigs also work nice, but some may consider that 'cheating'. ;-)
