I just had ro say thank you, when I got back into fishing a few years back it was you that inspired me. My wife loved coming out in the canoe and enjoying watching . We enjoyed the conversations and beautiful views we got to see together. She passed away last June and I couldn't bring myself to go out fishing alone. This spring started watching your videos again recently and I am inspired again to get back out there! People may not see the two of us fishing together, but I know she is there and hey if I am on my kayak( yes you inspired that too) LOL They won't hear me talking to her and thinking I am the crazy guy .(sometimes you need to say the quiet part out loud) haha Thank you for teaching me to fish again
Aries, I'm sorry to hear about your wife. I'm glad that my videos could help you continue to fish. If you go back a few years in my video you will meet Ryan, He was basically my boy. The best angler I've ever known. I tried hard to help him get off of drugs but in the end he was gone. I talk to him every day that I'm on the water.
@@Flukemaster I remember that video often, my wife and I were so sad to hear of his loss and so proud how you stepped up to try and help. I could talk for hours on this subject so I think I'll just send my love and any luck I can spare and hope you win another tournament this year!!
Great lesson. Man, you covered it in thorough detail, from gear to demo of techniques on the water. Excellent video tutorial. Glad to see you back 🎣👊🏼😎
Gene... just wanted to drop a line to tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I gave up bass fishing about 20 years ago when I moved west, concentrating solely on fly fishing for trout and steelhead. I actually guided for several years on some of the best trout streams the west has to offer. I returned to the east about ten years ago to my home in Virginia. I now live about 3 hours from any good trout fishing. This makes it difficult to fish very often for the species I most enjoy. To me, there is nothing more fun than sight fishing, stalking g and presenting a tiny fly, on a size 20 hook, to a big fish. Fortunately, I do live within easy reach of several excellent smallmouth rivers, and the area has many ponds and small lakes. The area is perfect for kayak fishing and I plan to purchase my first within the next few months. Before I moved, I sold ALL of my gear, but for my fly gear. I am now starting (slowly) to rebuild my spinning and baitcasting arsenal. What I have learned from the multitude of videos on YT is that bass fishing has changed tremendously in the time I've been away. Wacky rigs, Ned rigs, dropshots... I'd never heard these terms before a few weeks ago. So, I've been pouring over youtube trying to learn as much as I can. But, of all the channels, yours is the one I keep coming back to... and the only one I've subscribed to. Thanks for making these; please don't stop!
Great video. I do a lot of what you taught here but I still learned something new. Having a fluke on while fishing any other soft plastic is a good idea. If you get hit with either one and miss the fish you can try throwing the other. It works often.
Good video- I fell in love with fluke fishing several years ago at the KBF NC on Guntersville when I got a top 100 using them. I fish them A LOT slower than you do though. I work mine off the bottom a lot- and I usually use a 1/16 oz bullet weight-either screw lock or pegged with a cat whisker. I missed a lot on the EWG hooks and started using straight shanks- the EWG hooks you use look like they have a wider bite than the ones I used with the hook point in line with the eye- the hook needs to set up higher than the eye-otherwise it slips right through their lips without grabbing flesh.
First bait I fell in love with was a Slug go. Phenomenal bait. Then the culprit jerk worm, then I found the super fluke and caffeine shad which is what I throw now. I use the caffeine shad in deeper water because it's heavier and falls faster without adding weight. They're just so versatile. When I started 30 years ago, all I threw was a soft jerk bait, and a frog my first couple years.
The slug go is still my number one soft jerk bait.. It never stopped catching fish and can be waited with a whole nail to get it to sink faster. Where some guys just fish a fluke shallow I like to fish a slug go shallow and deep.. The next best would probably Be the caffeine shad.. I keep waiting for someone to come out with a fluke style bait with A longer throat so I can add more weight.an example of when an old bait becomes new again for those who have never fished it.Deadly every where I've fished it. I've got a lifetime supply so it's OK with me if no one fishes it and it goes extinct.
I learned about the fluke by going thru the boat ramp @ Lake Santa Fe…. I Lund a watermelon green Fluke w/ a 4/0 Texas rig hook,,, Looks like your rig’s Brother…. Blistered The fish down in Keystone Hgt’s. Stellar Bait,,!!! Thanks much Gene… 🌎🇺🇸🗽
These are great tips for everyone that doesn't use flukes often because your spit on and the jerk jerk pause is my favorite cadence by far, the color i get the best bites with is a albino shad powerbait and a limegreen with blueish top yum.. The zoom fluke is by far the best in white and a shad color for me. Thanks gene your the man im glad your back ive missed you all winter brother
.,.Gene you have the largest dang set of hands on the internet lol dam it boi ! Lol,, anyhow,,I really appreciate you and your methods of teaching us what you know and your personality is off the charts,,you keep smiling and talking and for me that makes your show so much better than the other RUclipsrs,,so from this Indiana bass fisherman DON'T STOP!!!
First time fishing a fluke today and I noticed my braid was twisting A LOT. I thought I rigged it wrong! Sooooo glad I found this vid. Putting a barrel on tonight!
I personally only use the caffeine shad now after I tried it I feel like it's such a good quality and action to it. What I do is when I insert the hook I put the hook through the nose a little further so when I have it rigged the plastic covers my knot and the front of the wood I tend to catch pretty much no grass at all on it it just slips right through everything
Edit: ok, so just finished the video lol. Got a quick answer to my question I wrote while watching you fish the fluke. Still, a video about different leaders lengths and setups for different situations would be amazing. I’ve been afraid of a shorter leader, but I’m gonna give it a go. Thanks again and look forward to your future content. Also love my new 13 fishing origin f1 and blackout combo. Amazing setup. How long are the leaders on your baitcasters? This is something I’ve been trouble nailing down. Fg knot is amazing for line guides, but it’s not perfect. Hate when slows bait or when it does thump through the guides. Hope you reply or make a video on your leaders setup for different rigs and situations. Love the content and thanks for all the great tips and lessons.
I use Quantum smoke rod with micro line guides and Quantum smoke S3 baitcaster with Sufix siege mono 12lbs and 14lbs line. I bought 10lbs line. I bought weighted twist locks in 4/0 and 5/0 hooks plus unweighted twist hooks. I have regular EWG hooks. I am a riverbank fisherman here in Fredericton New Brunswick
How do you like those fate spinning rods? I’m currently looking into getting myself a few spinning set ups one will probably have a weightless fluke or wacky rig on it for the days I’m not on my game for throwing it on casting gear. Primarily I will be using them for bottom contact baits such as the ned, neko, shakey heads and possibly a little bit of drop shots. I don’t use spinning to often but when I do get around to using it I want them to be sensitive enough to still feel light bites and not spend a ton on them due to the small amount of use. Thanks for the videos love the content you put out!
Why do you prefer eye of hook to be out of Fluke? I've always preferred it buried inside to reduce buildup of grass/moss. Not saying you're wrong but just curious. Love to fish Flukes, all colors but white is favorite. Use them on chatterbaits also. Have had better luck removing skirt. One day at Bull Shoals caught over 5 keepers. Not that special but 5 keepers were each a different species. Largemouth, Smallmouth, Spotted, Crappie and a 22" Walleye. Have caught Whitebass, Stripers and one carp with this bait. Goodluck and keep your videos coming.
Man i pulled the fluke out last week. 1st time this year. We couldn't buy a bite. I don't know what possessed me to do it but I did. And had five fish in the boat within the hour.
Hey Gene I bought me a 13 fishing blackout rod and it is a 7"3 medium heavy fast what lures would that be good for my buddies are saying chatterbaits but I don't know
I have a white fluke tied up at all times..Fish busts some pads behind me..Boom chuck the fluke. Troll up to a new area??? Throw the fluke to see if they are home...A big part of my bass game is white fluke
Idk Gene,,you left a lot of fish in that pretty water you just showed us,,I think a shallow running crank bait or a Spinning lure would've caught some fish down through there,,good luck in your tournament buddy !!
Took two fluke style baits out this weekend after watching this video and I did pretty good. Didn't catch any big ones, but I did catch a lot of 1.0 to 2.0 pounders. Even managed to get a big crappie on a fluke. Something else added to the arsenal! Thank you for the tips!
I'm really surprised you don't use a caffeine shad.....similar to you I'm a fluke fanatic and I've found much better options over a zoom. Do you just suggest that for your viewers wallets or is that truly your go-to fluke? Some of the better ones that I prefer are the caffeine shad obviously, the bass assassin shad, Yamomoto D shad, shit I fish a weighted hook zako (regular tail not paddle) and fish it exactly like you're describing. same side to Side action except the slow roll looks a whole lot better in my opinion to a square body.
I just bought my fluke today no luck yet.I have a ugly stick fishing rod spinning rod I’ve had for ten years I’ve just got back into fishing this year I’ve caught 7bass in July nothing yet I’m August ugg

Also, I put the hook deep enough where the eye and the knot aren't exposed out the head. It does pop to the surface more but makes it very weedless.
What you using for leaders with fluke and for top bait please buddy?
Thanks
When the fishing is hard in the hot summer I use flukes at night and pile'em up!

are you always using white? or do you use other colors?
hey flukemaster....have you evr fished a fluke wacky rigged under a bobber??
There isn’t enough bite gap with the offset hook in my opinion
Zman 7 inch fluke is the best fluke..Best action. If anyone knows a better fluke let me know..I have tried them all I thought .Zoom, KVD, Berkeley etc
When fishing open water do you ever rig you fluke backwards and use the belly as a hook guard?
It's crazy for me to watch you cast/work a fluke with a baitcaster. Someday I'll pitch a finesse lure without birds nesting...
Fluke JR is light the Super Fluke is heavy both easy to cast on the right set up
Maybe its the brand of swivel I use, but I still get line twist.
Awesome video! Love the barrel swivel. What lb. test are you using for the main line and/or the leader?
Hey Jean (or Gene), do you ever fish anything besides bass?
What about nose hooking it with octopus hook?
Why not use a weighted hook ?
What did I win ?
Damn I wish I was in weather I could wear a coat happy memorial day weekend from wildwood New Jersey
Man I’ve been riggin these things upsidedown 😂
😂 same. I’ve been doing it that way for at least 10 years. It works for me though.
