  • Sailing solo at night in my trailer Sailor - Copland Harrier 20. A 40 Nm upwind sail along the east coast of England in the North Sea from Woodbridge to Southwold. It was wind against tide so a little choppy. I had to get out to sea past all the fishing nets before it got dark. It was a good little adventure and great to spend some time alone a few miles offshore.

Gets a thums up from me. As a trailer sailing owner too, made me want to get back out in my boat (17ft Eage 525), many thanks for this, great real video :)

That’s great to hear! Nice little trailer sailer you have, if this video made just one person want to get out in their boat then I’m totally happy I made it. Let me know how it goes😀⛵️

Hi Ollie. Must've missed this video. From my limited experience doing a night offshore cruise I personally would get organised with warm snacks readily available in vacuum flasks but I would go with lots of small snacks eaten regularly rather than a meal. I guess I would favour those energy bars with plenty of hot drinks. For this reason I've got one of those big-arsed pump-action Thermos things which caterers use & can hold enough hot water to get you through the night. My best bit of kit for a night crossing is a one-piece dry-suit "dainties". It's a fleece onesie which keeps you toasty-warm however it can get problematical if you need to take a cheeky unscheduled dump Last thing, like you, I do not hang about down below in the cabin - in & out - or if going down for a kip - foulies & wellies off in one fluid movement & straight into the sleeping bag. It can't be long before your Belgian trip. I hope the weather is kind to you guys. Chin-chin Rej

Hey Rej, thanks for all the advice, I hear you- I will definitely get more organised, yes we’ve just completed our Belgium trip which was epic. We got hammered by 30 knot gusts which made for a rather uncomfortable and wet trip especially on the way there. I’ve uploaded a couple of short clips but it’s gonna take me a while to edit down the full vid. Was a great adventure. I could have done with your comment before we left! Snacks, hot drinks and keeping dry were all a major challenge.

@@boatedout Yep! That sound just like a similar epic trip I had which taught me a few good lessons. Looking forward to watching the video when you eventually release it. Chin-chin Rej

I love this. Really good. Your converting me back to a solid trailer sailer instead of a keeler. Great to be able to keep it on a trailer st home, but still good enough to cheeply coastal cruise. I like the auto helm and furling headsail

Thanks for the comment, yes for me it’s the best of both worlds, I find 20 feet is a good mid size that offers good all rounding. The lifting keel is brilliant. It’s quite funny actually as I’m sat here right now in a twin keeler 30 footer, aground!waiting for the tide to come in again. Wouldn’t have happened in Elise! The auto helm is just brilliant, having it connected to steer to a wind angle works really well upwind. And the furling headsail is a must have. I have every thing lead back to cockpit, I can even fly the symmetric spinnaker and do all the pole work from the cockpit. So I never need to go up on deck. Much safer. What boat do you have? And what would you go for as a trailer sailer?

I usd to have a monarch 17. Looking at buying an old tasman 20, a bigger version of the monarch, and giving a good going over fitting out more strongly and for just me and my son, not a family of four. Im in southern NZ

I’m considering doing the channel soon from Brightlingsea. The good thing about crossing from Essex is it’s usually a beam reach both ways!

Awesome! It’s a great trip, I did Southwold to Oostende in my
20 footer, can’t wait to do it again. A beam reach both ways would be ideal, unfortunately the weather this year never presented a decent window of opportunity. I would always have been waiting for fair winds for the return trip. What boat do you have? ⛵️

@@boatedout i felt the same, once the boat was prepped I couldn’t find a weather window.
I have a prelude 19 so similar to yours but with fewer gadgets!
How did you find the wakes in the TSS? When i’ve gone behind some of the tilbury traffic on my way to Ramsgate it was almost 2m which was… uncomfortable!

Very frustrating, I was also loaded up ready to go, life raft, fuel…..but the forecast was building the other side. I would have had 28knots as it was getting dark on my own, so I bailed.
I didn’t have AIS last year when I crossed, which was a bit tricky, found myself struggling to get a gap between the tankers, not sure if you saw but I did a vid on it. It was my first vid so take it easy on me!😁 I didn’t get that close to the tankers to be fair, so didn’t really notice the wake. 2m’s that’s decent! I’d highly recommend AIS though. It would be an awesome trip In your prelude! I loved the feeling of being out there in a small boat. Obviously smaller boats have been much further but was definitely my most memorable trip. Where were you planning to go to? As for gadgets, I couldn’t help myself. Probably the best function apart from AIS is the steer to wind mode. I’ve sailed miles without needing to trim the sails. 😁⛵️

I have a trailer sailer, but I need to buy navigation equipment for it . I don't think it has been sailed on the sea, something I wish to do in the near future. I live in Birmingham so need to trail it to the sea on weeks off.

You can set yourself up quite cheap with a tablet and the navionics boating app, or even on your phone. The app is like £40 or some thing. You might want to consider keeping the boat at a club as normally not expensive, then launch for the days you are there. Rather than all the towing. But sounds exciting. Best of luck! ⛵️

better check your wiring, thinking something made it pop

When I removed the fuse it was a 7amp and should be a 12 amp. So putting it down to a surge when the tiller pilot came off and went full lock. I completely rewired the boat earlier this year so was surprised I’d not fitted the correct fuse😬
