Yes, taxes on the lower classes are too high, and are too low on the rich. Vote for people who will fight to change that; that's how a democratic republic works. If you don't want to pay taxes, move to an uninhabited island (there's quite a few) & figure things out for yourself. But you won't, because then you won't have the infrastructure you're used to or the attention from the internet that you obviously crave.

@@petrosaguilar8916 Ukraine is a lot better than Russia, despite being pretty bad itself. Stopping a current dictator from acquiring more power & trying to succeed where Germany failed almost a century ago is important, I think.
Anyway, no, I don't agree with everything my taxes are spent on. Yes, citizens have the right to be upset and many should be.
But I'm not going to join a bunch of conspiracy theorists who think antisocial behavior & putting other citizens at risk makes them heroes.
Instead, I join protests. I vote (and voting does matter, though both parties are two sides of the same coin right now). I get involved in actual political action groups. I've even been arrested for participating in a peaceful protest (actually peaceful, not violent-sedition-at-the-capitol stuff), and I fought to get men's domestic abuse shelters built in Arkansas.
A handful of poor people refusing to pay state taxes & driving unlicensed while screeching wild reality-denying myths aren't going to fix things. At best, they'll make their tax protests lose credibility amongst all the other nuttery.
And, of course, the majority of SovCits are racist conservatives, the very people who caused the homelessness issue starting in the 80s, who famously overspend on pointless wars and bloated military, who keep raising taxes on the poor & lowering them for the rich, all while refusing any reforms that might actually solve some of these issues.
And on top of that, the most famous SovCits are narcissistic grifters who don't care about any of that, but just want to be able to take & do whatever they want without consequences.
To date, no SovCit has ever done anything to improve the lives of others, or done anything to actually address the problems you're talking about. What have YOU done to make any change for anyone but yourself?

I'm a lawyer, and while there are instances in which police are completely unjustified in their use of force, there are so many more where they are justified. Traffic stops are some of the most dangerous interactions officers face. A local 27-year-old Washington State Patrol officer was conducting a traffic stop and was hit by another intoxicated driver, not legally in our country, on the interstate and killed near my home recently. They have fear, too. That fear has to be restrained. Fleeing from a traffic stop, in which you had already taken far too long to stop and it had become a persuit, at ridiculous speeds and then reaching back in a vehicle when officers already have you out of it at gunpoint shows that these officers exercised extreme restraint and proves that your claim of being in fear for your life was totally unfounded. Your fear may be a factor in an interaction, but that fear has to be based on some objective facts specific to the interaction. Your fear of police because you saw news footage of George Floyd or Brianna Taylor, or any number of horrific interactions you weren't a party to, doesn't mean that the police pulling you over are going to harm you. There isn't a direct correlation or even a proximate correlation between those interactions and yours. And past interactions of yours don't hold much weight because they aren't predictive or even suggestive of outcomes in future interactions. Had you been shot in the back by this very officer or even any while unarmed and fleeing previously, it could be evidence of mental state, but that isn't the case. Unfounded fear, no matter how real it is to you (and I will give this last defendant the benefit of doubt because it doesn't matter if he's honest or not here) isn't a get out of jail free card.

I’m a retired civil trial attorney. This is almost the shortest deliberation I’ve ever heard. In 1997, I was a material defense witness in a domestic violence case where the jury was excused after a 1-1/2 day trial to deliberate and to order in lunch. Instead of taking the free lunch, the jurors told the bailiff to not bother ordering. The alleged victim, whose histrionic testimony added and altered testimony she’d given previously and was directly contradicted by their 13 year old son who’d been present, was so obviously perjurious that the prosecutor had to finally tell her to “shut up” in front of the jury or be sanctioned himself for suborning her perjury. The defense’s closing was that this had been a mutually combative end to a 25 year long marriage where testimony established she was the one who constantly slapped her husband and three sons throughout the marriage with the expectation she couldn’t be struck back, being a girl. After she hit him across the face while he wore glasses, the blow caused a small crack in his nose and his face to be sliced open by the lens, the defendant hit her back using his left hand (he was right handed), leaving a small mark on her face, deliberately deciding to stop taking her abuse. She called the cops and only he was arrested. The jurors took less than fourteen minutes to acquit him such that the not-victim returned to the courthouse after the lunch break to be informed by the bailiff of her soon to be ex husband’s acquittal. The defendant and I married three years later, had a son together, and were together until his death from a Sudden Heart Attack in 2015. He’d played football for Berkeley and never once lifted a hand against me or our son. The juries were fast, deliberate and correct in both this case and that of my beloved.

I appreciate his dedication to presenting his client’s case, but that has to be balanced by a dedication to presenting arguments for which there is a legal basis. There really isn’t a good faith argument that the defendants state of mind or intent is relevant regarding this license plate issue. That’s a strict liability crime, so where he got his plates, whether he thinks it’s legit, none of that matters. I’m a criminal defense attorney myself-sometimes you instruct the court on the legal basis for your client’s argument, and sometimes you instruct your client on the law. In this case, I would have done the latter.

First time in a while I’ve seen a prosecutor explicitly call out the flawed legal basis of the sovcit movement. Directly arguing that his underlying legal theories are unfounded rather than purely focusing on specifics of the case. Love it.

I used your code and left a nice review about you and how Ekster has always had your back and how that influenced my choice to go with them. I wanted high quality and was gonna spend for it. Thanks for the recommendation. I will have to let you know how it goes!
