Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in Part 2 of this 4-part series: Keyboardist extraordinaire Larry Dunn helped transform Earth, Wind and Fire into one of the all-time most successful R&B bands, with sales of more than 100 million albums worldwide, and in all 32 gold and platinum/multiplatinum singles and albums. EWF also collected six Grammys out of 13 nominations, four American Music Awards, a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Grammys' Lifetime Achievement Award, among other industry honors.
In addition to playing organ, synthesizer, piano and clavinet, Dunn served as the band's musical director. As one of the key people behind the scene, much of the group's musical success can be attributed to him. He also rehearsed EWF for live stage performances and wrote many of the musical segues and medleys. He had major creative influence in such classics as "Shining Star," "Spirit," "Be Ever Wonderful," "Runnin'," "See The Light," "Let Me Talk," "And Love Goes On," "Jupiter," and other melodies that continue to live on in the hearts of fans and popular music lovers.
Dunn's other production and performance credits include the Emotions, Level 42, Ronnie Laws, George Duke, Lenny White, Paulinho Da Costa, Foley, Ramsey Lewis, Caldera, Hubert Laws, Stanley Turrentine, Dianne Reeves, Brian Culbertson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stanley Clarke and Deniece Williams. Since 1988, Dunn and his wife Luisa have been involved with production projects, writing music for Japanese television commercials, film and studio work.
He released his first solo album in 1996 called Lover's Silhouette and in 2008 released N2 the Journey, which includes involvement of many of the high profile artists just mentioned. Dunn also continues to perform and maintain a busy schedule.
In this comprehensive series recorded from his home L.A. studio, he covers every aspect of his career. Later on he demonstrates some famous melodies on his keyboard and has wife and musical companion Luisa join in. This is a can't-miss journey with a modern funk-R&B-pop giant.

56. Saw EW&F three times. If anyone else have been to their concerts. The MESSAGE that they conveyed showed. Mix crowd predominatly white. Shouldn't matter. What an expierence. The music and lyrics were UNIVERSAL.
I got to meet Mr. Dunn, after a phenomenal performance at Catalina Jazz in Hollywood. He was warm and affable, indulging my friend and I at length. When we posed for a picture, he tickled my neck so I was smiling in the photo. Truly an amazing talent and a real, down to Earth human.
Best songs IMO Larry is really featured.

Now that's awesome!!!❤
Man, I could listen to Larry Dunn talk all day....
Larry’s synth solo on feeling blue is a classic!
Yes, I love “feeling blue”, !!!
Larry Dunn is the greatest synthesizer piano player on the planet!!! 🎹 He is truly a Genius!
Larry is a great keyboardist, but it’s his wit and down to earthiness I admire… and foremost his love of God…
Larry Dunn's chords on Devotion. Simple but powerful.
ken newton Exactly..... That song gives me goose bumps every time I hear it! Very inspirational!
Y’all did wonderful and I still listen to Earth Wind and Fire and I have nothing but the upmost respect for y’all. Amen 🙏
Larry Dunn is one musician I tried to get his synth sounds.... To me, he's one the best keyboard players and producers I admire..... May God bless him .....
LARRY DUNN IS THE BADDEST KEYBOARDIST OF ALL TIME AND I LOVE HIS MUSIC AND WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS IN THE COMING YEARS ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@chiquitalove9944 Billy Beck of the Ohio Players ain't no joke either. Like em both.
That Minimoog solo on Feelin' Blue is one of my all-time fave synth performances. Just the best...
Hearing 'Evil' on a transistor radio under my bed covers one night in the early 70's was my introduction to EW&F..i think it was the kalimba that made the tune so distintive
The epitamy of Legacy EWF....Rock on Larry Dunn with yo bad self!
Yessir! That's the Way of the World is easily one of the greatest and most important albums of ALL TIME!!!
Faces is an amazing album, they have so much amazing albums lol
Great interview! I really enjoyed listening to my favorite member of the band Larry Dunn.❤❤❤❤
It is so nice to hear him talk about his Mini Moog programming. Wish he could share that programming.

Love Earth Wind and Fire
I was about. 7 when open your eyes came out but and my sister finally just let me have her album cause I had it so much. When that's the ways of the world came out I played shinning star sometimes about 30 times in a row. Always thought Larry Dunn had the coolest afro. And the gratitude album; oh my God. EWF. What more can we say. Ever album never disappointed. Great interview.
I saw Earth Wind & Fire the first time that Capital Center never heard anything like it before live one of the few bands to come to Baltimore and give it their all we love them here
LARRY THANK YOU FOR BEING OPEN.
I'm still checking this interview out-2223. i'm sure i will continue to.
Larry 🎹🎹🎹
Man, this my dude, right here for sure. I would love to just sit down and chop it up one day with Larry. To this day I still listen to that "KILLER" organ solo on Zanzibar. No matter how down I am. Whenever I listen to Zanzibar I'm back up. Wow talk about Karma, I began this comment before Larry even began talking about his Zanzibar solo. And literally as I was typing he mentioned the Zanzibar solo. That song is literally like my insulin when I'm in a diabetic frame of mine. AMAZING Song
LARRY COWROTE KEEP YOUR HEAD TO THE SKY . FIRST TIME HEARING THIS . LARRY DIDNT GET THE CREDIT . FIRST TIME HEARING THIS .
Thank God Larry is such a great storyteller 'cause dude is a poor interviewer. But thank God he landed this interview. This is the next best thing to meeting Larry in a 4 hour delay at an airport. This the kind of conversation I imagine I would have with him in a situation like that. Ultimately, thank you Funkenstuff.
In what ways do you believe the interviewer could have done a better job?
@@FunknstuffNet None man, you did great. F^ck the haters.
@@bkkersey93 🤪🥰🤣😅☺️😆😁
@@FunknstuffNet You did great. This actually the most in depth interview I've seen with Larry Dunn regarding his career and EWF. Well done!!! He trusted you with him telling 50 years of history. It could have been anybody, but God chose you.
No horns and strings on masquerade. I know everything about the Fire's music
This is great, Man. I'm only a few minutes in on this clip.
I was just talking about the Spectrum with some older Cats in my band (in Philly). It's not even up anymore but I heard lots of stories about that place.
I would have asked him what was up with them clowning at the end of See The Light!!! lol
24:10 "Oh myyy"... heheheh That said a lot.
Every time I've seen Earth Wind & Fire live I would always look around at the at the audience every nationality together in one place they bought people together
Oh My GOD...How could you not ask him about those Synth parts in between the songs on "That's The Way Of The World?"....I was waiting on you to ask him about that.
Sorry about that
It's fine...But if you get the chance please ask him about that and where did he get the idea to do that?
Wow, what a work ethic:) for the love of music : musician and music director; writer! Rush to judgement regarding on mixed ethnicities : that’s terrible Larry :
I have EVERY EWF album and CD's every single one. I'm talking post "Salty Peppers". I'm talking before Phillip, Ralph, Larry, Fred, Andrew, Johnny, Roland I'm talking when Wade Flemings was in the band. Reese and Verdine were in that original version of course, and yes Larry, those are the songs from that first album you mentioned.
No Horns on Masscurade From Blewfoot....
I SEE WHY LARRY LEFT THE GROUP. HE WASN’T GETTING PAID FOR SONGS WRITTEN.
What?!?!? He should be the main one getting paid... Keyboard players are a rarity!!!!
