    Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
    Featured in Part 3 of this 4-part series: Keyboardist extraordinaire Larry Dunn helped transform Earth, Wind and Fire into one of the all-time most successful R&B bands, with sales of more than 100 million albums worldwide, and in all 32 gold and platinum/multiplatinum singles and albums. EWF also collected six Grammys out of 13 nominations, four American Music Awards, a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Grammys' Lifetime Achievement Award, among other industry honors.
    In addition to playing organ, synthesizer, piano and clavinet, Dunn served as the band's musical director. As one of the key people behind the scene, much of the group's musical success can be attributed to him. He also rehearsed EWF for live stage performances and wrote many of the musical segues and medleys. He had major creative influence in such classics as "Shining Star," "Spirit," "Be Ever Wonderful," "Runnin'," "See The Light," "Let Me Talk," "And Love Goes On," "Jupiter," and other melodies that continue to live on in the hearts of fans and popular music lovers.
    Dunn's other production and performance credits include the Emotions, Level 42, Ronnie Laws, George Duke, Lenny White, Paulinho Da Costa, Foley, Ramsey Lewis, Caldera, Hubert Laws, Stanley Turrentine, Dianne Reeves, Brian Culbertson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stanley Clarke and Deniece Williams. Since 1988, Dunn and his wife Luisa have been involved with production projects, writing music for Japanese television commercials, film and studio work.
    He released his first solo album in 1996 called Lover's Silhouette and in 2008 released N2 the Journey, which includes involvement of many of the high profile artists just mentioned. Dunn also continues to perform and maintain a busy schedule.
    In this comprehensive series recorded from his home L.A. studio, he covers every aspect of his career. Later on he demonstrates some famous melodies on his keyboard and has wife and musical companion Luisa join in. This is a can't-miss journey with a modern funk-R&B-pop giant.

    Larry Dunn is essentially the nucleus of the primary EWF sound... He has an acute ear for blending the chords that established the groups sound.... So sad the creative differences encouraged departure from the group... either way he is an astute professional and a well disciplined musician.....
    keep doing what you do Larry Dunn....

    Back in 1987, when the late Maurice White decided to make the album "Touch the World", a certain number of members decided that the Earth Wind & Fire adventure was over for them and decided not to return : Larry Dunn was one them, along with the late guitarist Roland Bautista, Maurice's own brother Fred White (R.I.P.) and a couple of others ... However, from the early 1870s till 1983, the Earth, Wind & Fire sound owes a lot to his synthesizer's very specific sounds, recognizable at once

    Earth, Wind& Fire is the greatest band ever! As a little boy Michael Jackson would come to see them perform and personally I've seen them live 12 times! So much talent in one band, an embarrassment of riches! They're often referred to as the black Beatles which is supposed to be a compliment but, truth be told the Beatles couldn't couldn't hold a torch to EWF! I think Steve Harvey said it best, " the best band ever on God's green earth!

    I love Larry and his talent and contribution to the greatest band Earth, Wind@Fire. I wish though he would have traveled with the group that is now, especially since he is an original member, but I can understand the reason why he doesn’t. He touched on it a little. Thank you Mr Larry Dunn!!!

    • @pussyfunk-stopputtingthepu2652
      @pussyfunk-stopputtingthepu2652 Год назад +1

      Nope ... because the albums "Raise !" (1981), "Powerlight" (1982) and "Electric Universe" (1983) - hence after Al McKay's departure (and Roland Bautista's return) - were still decent ... So was "Touch the World" (1987) - in which Larry Dunn was absent - then, I think it was more due to the mood of each decade ... The first that really sucked for me was "Heritage" (from 1990), because it all was over, then; and I didn't care much about everything they did after that, personally

      To @lindawhaleyjohnson5492 : I couldn't agree with you more my sister. It is the kind of song that made me wish I could sing like our beloved brother Maurice White. It is a beautiful dedication to black women the world over that hasn't been matched since it was recorded. On the All n' All lp is a Brazilian interlude that I think should be played before "Be Ever Wonderful" begins. It is brief and acts as a beautiful entry to "Be Ever Wonderful" that is beautifully played by the talented Larry Dunn!

    I saw every EW&F tour from That's the Way of the World through Raise. The All N All tour they played Zanzibar with Al Mckay soloing on that red Gibson E335. Totally blew me away, played it note for note off the record. I'll never forget that. Larry had that mound of Keyboards and that computerish gadget with the flashing lights (similar to what behind him in this interview except ) in the back of the rig. Man that was an awesome show.
    One thing though I thought Verdine levitated on the All N All tour first. Also thought the tour when the cylinders came down was the Spirit tour. One other note If I remember correctly in the Hit Man book Maurice had that conversation with Clive Davis something to the effect of "I only have one music career and you're messing it up yada yada yada" . Haven't read that book since the mid 90s so I could be wrong.
    As far as keyboards producing and arranging Larry has had a big impact in my music since those early days. Still listening to Caldera, Lenny White, Level 42, Larry's production on Ronnie Law's Flame album was a masterpiece.
    Great interview!

    IMO..They lost me after the "Gratitude" album...EWF and Kool and the Gang in the late 1970s became to commercial and pop oriented for my tastes. The rawness, soulfulness and funkiness had left. When they both started using background dancers was the last straw for me..🤟🏾🎼🤟🏾

      @@FunknstuffNet I think " Spirit " disappointed me and I hadn't recovered when "All n All" came out next. Grant it the production was more polished than the previous albums, but the songs didn't touch me. BTW I remember in the early 70's when I witnessed EWF getting blown off the stage by Mandrill and other funk bands. But they persevered, got better live and created a huge following on the east coast.

    Couldn't disagree more. I AM is the pinnacle of EW&F and Maurice. The production, arrangements, horns, musicianship and sophistication is right up there, with the finest ever done.
    Besides the hits, In the stone, Let your feelings show, Wait, You and I are phenomenal songs.
    I Am to me is EW&F, Sargent Pepper's album.
    Faces is like I Am #2 with off the chart production, arrangements and sophistication.
    Yes, mid seventies EW&F definitely more hard core funk, but i LOVED the evolution to
    September and the I Am, Faces period.

    • @FunknstuffNet
      @FunknstuffNet  5 месяцев назад

      To each his own. I had never disliked EWF (or Emotions) hits until Boogie Wonderland and, to a lesser extent, After the Love Is Gone. On top of that, there was not a single funk banger approaching previous deep groove glory.

    • @robmorrison1043
      @robmorrison1043 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@FunknstuffNet I can understand Boogie Wonderland, if you view that as a disco track. I personally think Boogie Wonderland is more R&B than disco, but like a lot of great R&B ot got lumped into the whole disco backlash.
      I don't get the After the love is gone. It was one of the decades top R&B ballads. It had fantastic production, arrangement vocals and musicianship. The song was written by some of the most talented musicians around. David Foster, Jay Grayden and Bill Champlin.
      The vocals were perfection and it was a #1 world hit and won a grammy for R&B Record of the year and was nominated for song and record of the year. It is widely seen as one of the best crafted songs of its genre.

    • @FunknstuffNet

      It just does not resonate with me from a deep rhythmic soul perspective in the same way as prior classics like Reasons, Devotion, Can't Hide Love, All About Love, Imagination, Love's Holiday or I'll Write a Song for You.
