    Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
    Featured in Part 1 of this 4-part series (see Part 2 here • "TRUTH IN RHYTHM" - La... ): Keyboardist extraordinaire Larry Dunn helped transform Earth, Wind and Fire into one of the all-time most successful R&B bands, with sales of more than 100 million albums worldwide, and in all 32 gold and platinum/multiplatinum singles and albums. EWF also collected six Grammys out of 13 nominations, four American Music Awards, a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Grammys' Lifetime Achievement Award, among other industry honors.
    In addition to playing organ, synthesizer, piano and clavinet, Dunn served as the band's musical director. As one of the key people behind the scene, much of the group's musical success can be attributed to him. He also rehearsed EWF for live stage performances and wrote many of the musical segues and medleys. He had major creative influence in such classics as "Shining Star," "Spirit," "Be Ever Wonderful," "Runnin'," "See The Light," "Let Me Talk," "And Love Goes On," "Jupiter," and other melodies that continue to live on in the hearts of fans and popular music lovers.
    Dunn's other production and performance credits include the Emotions, Level 42, Ronnie Laws, George Duke, Lenny White, Paulinho Da Costa, Foley, Ramsey Lewis, Caldera, Hubert Laws, Stanley Turrentine, Dianne Reeves, Brian Culbertson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stanley Clarke and Deniece Williams. Since 1988, Dunn and his wife Luisa have been involved with production projects, writing music for Japanese television commercials, film and studio work.
    He released his first solo album in 1996 called Lover's Silhouette and in 2008 released N2 the Journey, which includes involvement of many of the high profile artists just mentioned. Dunn also continues to perform and maintain a busy schedule.
    In this comprehensive series recorded from his home L.A. studio, he covers every aspect of his career. Later on he demonstrates some famous melodies on his keyboard and has wife and musical companion Luisa join in. This is a can't-miss journey with a modern funk-R&B-pop giant.

      Brilliantbeing Maurice white was clearly the center of that universe. Dunn was a kid mentored by White. Without White, EWF would not have existed period. There were other events that caused the band to suffer.

    Thank you very much for your info and story Mr. Dunn. You inspired me to pursue music a long time ago....your work is completely magical, I always thought that you are completely different from every other keyboard /synthesizer player! The work you did with EWF just stands timeless....I never heard many of your sounds in other funk jazz bands....songs like jupiter and magic mind..... I guess that Maurice White used some unbelievable production skills and choices that didn't hurt either. The piano on Fantasy sounds so majestic bright and deep! Also....the group Free Life was a great spinoff....was that just Phillip Baileys' project? Or did you write on that also? Thank you very much for sharing this Brother!

    What was the reason leaving EWF?

    • @FunknstuffNet
      @FunknstuffNet  6 лет назад +8

      He did not believe in what they were doing anymore, it was not the same after Electric Universe.

    • @tonartification
      @tonartification 6 лет назад +5

      I agree with Larry. Electric Universe was the lowpoint, trying to imitate the zeitgeist. The spirit was gone. The Faces album was their last big release. Creatively speaking, the 70s was their decade, releasing one after one fantastic album. I had the opportunity to interview Maurice and Verdine, and 5 years ago also Ramsey Lewis. Most part of our talk was the 60s and 70s period. Especially Ramsey went back to the Chess years (the pre EWF days), when Maurice White used to play with everybody (lots of jazz guys too). Maurice* himself remembers the dates with Bunky Green and Sonny Stitt very well ... ;) - *Maurice interview from 2002
