- Brought to you by Funknstuff.net and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in Episode 72 (Part 1 of 2; see Part 2 here • "TRUTH IN RHYTHM" - Da... ): Singer-guitarist-composer-producer Mic Murphy and keyboardist-composer-producer David Frank, collectively are known as The System -- one of the most successful electronic pop-funk acts of the 1980s. Having met each other in the early 1980s while working for the disco/funk band Kleeer, Frank and Murphy first collaborated on a track called “It’s Passion,” which took off on radio and in clubs within weeks of its 1982 release. The subsequent 1983 debut album called Sweat included the title hit, “I Won’t Let Go” and the R&B smash “You Are in My System.” Robert Palmer’s cover of the song became a mainstream rock hit. The duo’s sparse, hypnotic sound was quite innovative at the time, blending soul, funk, New Wave, pop and electronic music sensibilities.
The System would go on to release a total of five albums in the 1980s, collecting seven top 25 R&B hits between 1983 and 1989. Among those cuts were “Pleasure Seekers,” “This Is for You,” “Nighttime Lover,” “Midnight Special,” the theme song to Eddie Murphy’s hit comedy “Coming to America” and the No. 1 R&B and top 5 pop sensation “Don’t Disturb This Groove.” Throughout that decade the duo also composed, produced and performed on an all-star roster of other artists’ works, including those of Mtume, Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, Scritti Politti, Angela Bofill, Billy Idol, Billy Squier, Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald and Nona Hendryx. After a hiatus during the 1990s, The System returned in 2000 with arguably their funkiest album yet in ESP. After another protracted absence, Frank and Murphy delivered their most recent album in 2013, System Overload, which found them returning more to their original sound.
In this deep dive interview, the guys spill the beans on The System’s entire story, including the albums, tracks, performances, challenges, successes, creativity, fun, fulfillment and new music. Like many, theirs is a tale of years of groundwork and hard work being laid before they became what appeared to be an overnight sensation. They join TRUTH IN RHYTHM from their respective home studios on the left and right coasts. No need to break a sweat, just sit back and enjoy -- and stick around for a little keyboard noodling before it’s all said and done. Turn on to The System!

Don't disturb this groove in my opinion is in the top 100 best pop rock songs of all time never gets old sounds fresh every time.
Fantasic song and production/groove!.
One of my forever favs. For that song to stand head and soldiers amongst my way deep eclectic "crates" of music speaks volumes
One of the best
Remember, I am called saving money for a rainy day today, The System, Inc. Thank you for your song called The Sky is called the limit of the year.
Congratulations 🎉👏....
Keep up the good work too!❤
Don't disturb this groove is unreal!!. That groove and song!.
True masterpiece
You are in my system is an awesome song and it was and still is unique with a creative sound musically and vocally.
There's nothing out there that can compare to it.
Especially when it first dropped. It's one of those seminal, branching out songs in terms of the style and flavor of music at that time. So good that the sound was emulated
Only a few people can say they had a true masterpiece in Don't Disturb! Milestone of anyone young in late 80s. That sound reminds me of what Heaven might sound like.
Don’t Disturb this Groove is my all time favorite song
Definitely one of my favs. Whenever I hear it, I am instantly transported. It is an essential song in the soundtrack of my youth
These guys should be in The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
DEFINITELY !!!!!!
The system were a underated music band they change the game in the music industry.the syncope baselines and chords building were from another level.
They was jamming and I still listen to them to this day.
Just found this now. Wow, thank you!!! This group is the blueprint, the creators/conduits of a sound, the influencers on songwriting, two who became “Greats”, legends, still with us today. So grateful for this interview!🙏

Pleasure seekers was my introduction to this group. Loved their sound and mic Murphy's style back in the 80s
These two dudes are probably one of my all-time favorite groups. They're still so inspiring! Can't wait for the new stuff.
One of your best interviews...You asked the right questions and knew when to get out of the way...Like a funk point guard.
I LOVE THE SYSTEM!
80's Synth funk pioneers
I love them so much. "It's passion" is pure bliss.
Promises can break !!!? Pure Fire 🔥
UNSUNG!!!!!
Good Lord, they are just so naturally respectful of one another!

Facts
THANK You for this upload!💕
"The System" with their "YOU'RE IN MY SYSTEM" hit my ear drums HARD in 1983 - as did "DON'T DISTURB THIS GROOVE" and so many other tracks from this band...💖
I just ordered their cd's today (played their cassettes in my car back in the day, until they got curly - using my trusted Bic pen to fix them...), and I'll be groovin' to them until my last breath - and beyond...💃
Great memories from the 80's. David, a genius and Mic, my crush with the yearning, vulnerable voice.
Living legends!
I remember Kleer.
Keep Your Body Working comes to mind when I think of that group. You are dead if you dont move when that is played
We love you David!
I love these guy's music, I still play x periment, it still sounds incredible in 2019. David is an incredible musician and mic. Great interview
Awesome. Glad Dave referenced Kashif. I always wondered about a connection, since the system and Kashif often used the same personnel in sessions. E.g., background vocalists and percussion, and engineers. Etc... great interview. Can't wait for Part 2. Thanks
Of Course Kashif used Bashiri Johnson in the percussion chair most of the time
@@bmuhamad That was my original point. With their paths crossing so often, I was wondering why they never collaborated, as in Kashif & The System. Otherwise, yes, lots of studio personnel in common, not just the world-renowned Bashiri but a long list. Just read album credits...
When i was like 5 i remember singing don't disturb this groove at the top of my lil lungs lol..this is a fantastic interview sir
I just came across I Cant Take Losing You recently and I cant believe how good these guys are. I never heard of them, shocked at how skilled and talented they are.
If you can, listen to their album"The Pleasure Seekers."
Yes, I remember when funk was a dirty word, too. As a little prep girl in the early 80s, I whispered the word among my friends who also enjoyed funk. So nice to have found someone else who enjoys funk as much as I. Subscribed! Help bring it back!
I miss you today, ❤ My Smooches 💋...
Was a big fan of the system. I loved ‘baptise the beat’ one of my favourite tracks of that time. Two very interesting guys. Great stories, and obviously very talented.
Love the system...born in 92 and from Brooklyn, NYC. i dj from time to time at bars and always try to play a couple of their tracks. People are always asking me who is that. Thanks for the interview this is gold
One of my favorite group of all times nobody got beats and up tempo music like them and i didnt know they still made music recently cant wait to hear the new joints
This is my first time watching this and wow they aged so well and good to see them both doing well
ABSOLUTELY, " Don't Disturb This Groove, " by far, The Hot Rocker of it's time.... Play it now & watch the BEASTINESS of this tune return like it was the first time heard.
Excellent interview of a pioneering duo. Thanks so much!
I met Mic what a real cool cat.I saw Jack sass back in 78,in Queens NY.Kick azz group
Great interview!
Passion
Love, love, love Mic's voice!
Adore it❤
Thank you so much for this! I'm a big fan of them. I met the duo in Brooklyn, NY back in 2012. They are awesome dudes! Looking forward to more interviews.
I still play you guys music, xperiment album is an amazing album, David that white man has soul lol.
Thank you for featuring these underrated and great innovative producers and songwriters.
Paul Pesco and Kris Kellow were also great and part of their setup.
I hope they come back.
I am now a sub.
Great channel.
Don’t disturb this groove brought me here
Excellent interview as always.

So great.... very interesting interview.
They had a lot of hit baptized the beat was a masterpiece as well as you are in my system.
I play The System stuff on the radio a lot, people love it. I have a sealed original unopened copy of the 'Sweat' LP can't bear to open it!
Love the system too. Fell in love with that sound back in the early to mid 80s. They also had the cameo on beat street. Did they ever play at paradise garage or club zanzibar.
Kashif, The System, D Train, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were the kings of these fantastic era
Unfortunately Kashif is no longer with us.
@@1_South_Business_Services I know, it's sad, I love his productions (Melba Moore, Howard Johnson, Evelyn King, his own songs...), what an incredible sound at this time, and it still is
@@1_South_Business_Services what happened to him? Wow.
@@humanitiesprofessor1912 Kashif passed away suddenly. :'(
@@captainpawpawchannel True that!
The song You Are In My System, very classic I mean the opening from the snare and the synth beat, and the drum fills
After that it's Chaka Khan's This Is My Night
Then comes This is For You, Pleasure Seekers,
And yes you know it "Pay Attention, Are You Listenin'"
It's the 1987 top hit Don't Disturb This Groove or DDTG, then came Nighttime Lover from the same LP
Also the theme to 1988's Coming to America
Followed by 1989s Midnight Special
With a duo like System, their grooves were not to be disturbed
But to dance to
Most favorite group ❤🎉❤ 22:50
Rock And Roll me again tune from Beverly Hills cop. What a Spine Tingling tune.Fantastic Band!

wow so unbelievable... this young man became old. I mean, it seems like yesterday. Can't believe it that he's a senior citizen now.
"Sing Jackson 5 song" He looks like a long lost brother. 😄
right !!! looking like Jermaine
God how I miss the 20th Century! FunK Maestros! David Frank, He sort of invented the idea 30 second note synthesizer w/ bass parts & drum parts, He's really the 1st Guy to use the sequencer & drum machine & took it to the nxt level, He inspired guys like Harold Faltermeyer, Paul Hardcastle, Jan Hammer Etc
I'm shocked that the boys did not mention the group The Art Of Noise as an inspiration in the synth world of music. They are the Gods of British industrial and pop synth music.
I have to say this I'm living in Tyler Texas it's like 1983 I'm missing the big city of Chicago I'm going to this record shop looking for some music and I go who is this left-handed phone you look at Michael Jackson cat on the album cover it was the system so I bought the cassette best thing I ever done in my life I love this band always have always will from a true funkster.
Just subscribed Scott, enjoyed your interviews!!, Have you ever considered interviewing the Jets and Nushooz and Sugar babes - known as Stacey & Kamiko?... I really would like to know what happened to these talents. Have you ever considered?..
Will follow up and see if you did any interviews with these groups I mentioned, maybe I have missed as well. Best Wishes!
Enjoying your work Scott.
Thanks, I am open to those guests if they can be tracked down and are interested. I have reached out to the Jets on Facebook and email without success. Update: Reached out to Nu Shooz, cannot find contacts for Sugar Babes.
Robert Palmer boosted You’re In My System, by taking it to a Dance Rock Hit, whereas The System version was “The Club Scene/ R&B/ Disquoteque Sound. But for whatever, it was Double Smash, and it ushered in a new way of hearing “newly released music publishing”( some have attempted, but didn’t have that type of success).
The Oberheim DSX, DMX and OBXa were called "The System". I wonder if they got their name from that?
Interesting supposition.
Electronic synthesizers one man band
This is a great interview. I actually had a chance to remix their work twice as well as promote one of the projects.
Also, I'm working on the "Where Are They Now?" video where it goes into detail of their work and this interview is amazing.
May I use this for the video? Credit will be given.
As long as attribution is very clear you may use it. But also let me know when it can be viewed. Good luck with the project.
@@FunknstuffNet No problem! Sometime later in the year it should be done and uploaded. I have to update some of my info and get some more images. But most definitely, you'll be the first to get notified.
thanks
My baby...
Oberheim OB-8, DSX, DMX, at that time was a Recording Studio(Pre Production Studio). Still in it’s form, Fat Ass, Big Bertha Butt, Get Yo’ Boogie On Down, Self Contained Music Factory. Make Use Of The “Old School”, because today’s Music is Ultra Light In The Ass!! It 👅’s!!
❤them
What's up Mic.
Beat Street brought me here😎
Baptize the beat ….🎉 37:27
That song is blazing hot
👍👍👍
Love
How is he now? Instagram inactive.
Dont forget... I wanna make You Feel Good
💎
Is it just me or does David Frank come across as kind of an abrasive personality in parts of this interview?
Not to me. I enjoyed him.
Not in the slightest.
Quite to the contrary actually.
Not at all....
Mic Could play Sammy Davis Jr. in a biopic.
DSX,DMX,OBXa
Magyarul?
Don't disturb this grove....
Mic looks so different now.
That happens the older you get.
He is still cute
