- Tommy had such an engaging spirit. Everybody loved Tommy. And Tommy loved everybody. In fact, he always said so. 'I love everybody, man!' He greeted complete strangers as though he'd known them for years. Tommy was indeed, EVERYBODY’S brother.
In a special segment of THE PLAYGROUND, Eddie asked a few special friends to share their thoughts and memories of the late ..... and definitely great TOMMY DEBARGE! Check out an awesome conversation and somewhat of a family reunion on THE PLAYGROUND .... as always WHERE THE PLAYERS PLAY. And as you all know, our brother Tommy was definitely a player!
Rest, Tommy DeBarge (1957 - 2021).

I remember in Akron in the early 70s they had bands play in the gym on Friday nights.one night after the show was over I went up to the Congos & started playing & this guy came up to me & said, you're pretty good, how old are you etc. come to find out, after he was gone, that guy was Phillip Ingram. I wish we could have kept talking. I'm from Akron Ohio. Still there.Have always been so proud of Phillip, James Ingram & switch.😊
Awesome!! Love Switch G & Lisa-Lisa LoveJamzOnTheRadio see you on Oakland Yoshi's next month.
So good! I played guitar in a band we called Two and the Family with Bobby (keys, vocals), Bunny (vocals), Tommy (bass, vocals), Andre (drums, vocals), Stanley Hood (sax) and Michael Walker (sax). We used to rehearse at the DeBarge family house - on Giddings. We all came up paying the GR clubs Track II Lounge, the Limelight, the Yacht Club, even the Ferris Hotel.
Woo Weeeee, the Limelight on Division was a rough club back in the day. I grew up in the 70's and 80's.
Lucky Man
This is a wonderful tribute to Tommy Debarge..blessings 🙏
First, Rest In peace, Tommy. I'm late but love this tribute. Second, you guys are the best!! Forever Legends!
My Switch story. I remembered my mom and I were at the record store. I was in the 5th grade when I saw your first album cover. I said, "Mama, looooook." They, all are fine!" And she brought the album. Lol. Then we listen to the album and said, and they can "SING."
Please come to Pittsburgh.
Again, thanks for sharing the love for your fellow brother.
I need a SWITCH movie.
Great interview. May Tommy rest until Revelations 21-3-4 is a reality 🙏🏿🙏
Great convo! I'm still watching old videos of you guys on RUclips and Unsung. I can't get enough. Peace and Love Gentlemen. ❤
Damn, this was a great tribute to listen to. R.I.P. To Tommy, Bobby, and also to your brother Philip, James Ingrahm.. Listening to this brought back so many memories from my military career. Switch was the band I loved listening to. Bobby's and Tommy's infectious vocals blending with Philip's on so many songs were captivating, to say the least. So, thank you, Greg, Eddie, Jodie, Philip and newest member, Akil, for your stories and the memories you left us as SWITCH..❤💐👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾👌🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Love you Tommy Debarge 🎸🎸
Great program Eddie
Tommy's son Andrew can play a mean guitar 🎸also.
And if you ever do a tribute show with El DeBarge honoring Bobby DeBarge and James Ingram, you should conclude it with Quincy Jones classic “The Secret Garden.” Greg would sing the Barry White part, Akil, who is a great edition, could perform the Al B Sure! Role, Phillip can do the James Ingram role and of course El would reprise his role. This would be a historic collaboration given the fact that Barry White put together White Heat which gave birth to Switch which gave birth to DeBarge and Quincy Jones discovered James Ingram.
Man I’d love to see that Live Concert in Memphis with the Barkays. My Great Grandmother bought my tickets. I had to be probably 12 or 13 years old my first ever concert. I’ll never forget Tommy & Bobby doing Ad libs echoing each other. It’s was so amazing to watch because I didn’t know Tommy sang and he sound just like Bobby!❤❤❤❤❤
I learned something tonight, some of those notes I thought was bobby was, actuallyTommy, wowwww
A wonderful show and especially for our Brother Tommy DeBarge Resting In Peace in Heaven. Thank you!
Watching this again....I can't tell you how many times I have recounted some of the stories from this show when I talk about the incredible Tommy DeBarge. I still get choked up because I never got to tell him that I admired the man as much as the musician.
Oh my God. This story brings back memories. A good story. Loved it.
Switch has left a great legacy and their slow jams are some of the greatest in Motown history. I have always been a fan of the DeBarge Family and I have all the books. I considers Greg and Tommy’s books very insightful and enjoy them very much. Recently El DeBarge performed a tribute to Bobby DeBarge with Switch at the Globe Theater in L.A. Because of Covid I couldn’t go but it’s a great concept. Hopefully someone can do a pay per-view of concerts so we can enjoy from home the concert experience. Next time you all perform again you need to not only pay tribute to Bobby but the late great James Ingram as well, which is also apart of the Switch legacy. And by doing so you would attract a larger audience. I got my own playlist but I realize not a promoter.
I want to be in the dropbox..LOL God Bless you Great reminiscing and hearing your memories.. You contribution to music is legendary
!
Me too. lol Can I get a copy?
What an amazing tribute!💛💛💛💛💛🍒🍒🥰
It was a wonderful show! Thank you and your guests for sharing these moments and anecdotes with us. It means a great deal.
Beautiful interview thank you I shared it with these young bucks out here so they can see what is real music
Thanks for doing this great show on the late Tommy D. I wish more people would play “I Finally Found Somebody New,” co-written a co-sung by Tommy and Bobby. Thanks for info on Best Beat in Town. Also I always had a question if the famous guitar solo on “There’ll Never Be,” was actually Tommy or a Motown Session musician, playing.
Remember having the album before motown released it while living in grand rapids, see Melvin Clark on here also had a great time playing bass with him in the band hotpoint with the Honeycutts. R.i.p Tommy and Bobby
Thank you so very much! He deserves all the love just like like all of Switch!! Love you guys so much!! I listen to you EVERYDAY!! THANK YOU FOR BLESSING US WITH YOUR EXCELLENCE!!🥰❤❤❤💯
Thank You 🙏🏾
Tommy looked like he was the goofball of the group lol
I've looked everywhere to find the full performance of I Wanna Be With You and can't find it.
Thank you for this wonderful tribute to Tommy DeBarge. He was one of my favorite Switch members because I loved his style of bass playing.
I really love you guys given remembrance to such an amazing musician as Tommy Debarge. He was extraordinary in his ability. And that's not meaning to sound irresponsible for the musicianshiop that Switch brought us as a whole. You guys were phenomenal. The sound you gave us was unforgettable and remains relevant to date. Thank you for given us some insight to Tommy Debarge and his life as a member of Switch. Those memories are the most important to me as a fan.
RIP Tommy DeBarge. This was a great video. I read Tommy's book and everything that was said about his personality, I could visualize just from what I read in his book. Thank you
RUclips does too much. I was not reminded and missed the live session and I think many more did. I watched the replay and enjoyed it, but still will appreciate if youtube will Remind when it supposed to.
According to Tommy's book the former members of Switch treated him badly after the group broke up.
Williams is profiting off of the Debarge name..with his book
Yet he says Bobby wasn't the "hot spot" in Switch
Jealous dry hater
I hope you guys get together and do something similar for Bobby’s birthday. It’s great to see you all share these stories
Amazing discussion
I always thought bobby debarge sang that entire song I finally found someone or did they sing in parts
is their any footage of playing the bass?
Eddie looks like an older Xzibit lmaoo
Damn
Hahaha
Awesome show. Who was their accountant & manager? Would be great to hear about the numbers they did, where the money went?
I knew if then through some cousins in Pasadena, Ca.
New R n B group Wanmor signed on Mary J’s label has remade “I call your name”
Will we ever see the live show Greg mentioned? I know the band would shine through any poor quality.
Did Tommy ever lead a song
Marvin was @ Trulight!
