208: PNSO "Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis" (Chongzuo 2022) Review

  • Erratum: In response to a question from a viewer, let me clarify that "Sinopliosaurus weiyuanensis" is still considered a plesiosaur. It is only "Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis" that is considered nomen dubium. I should have been specific, as what I said implied the entire genus Sinopliosaurus is invalid. It is not.
    Indeed, Sinopliosaurus weiyuanensis having been named first, its use takes precedence, and the genus should in fact be considered a plesiosaur for now. In that light, "Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis" should not even be considered nomen dubium, but completely invalid altogether.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Today we have another controversial offering from PNSO, the “Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis”.
    Based on some teeth, and following a very convoluted path from plesiosaur to spinosaurid, this very interesting dinosaur is as yet still nomen dubium. Nonetheless, PNSO has decided to honour it with its usually amazing rendition of detail, sculpt and paint, resulting in a beautiful spinosaurid that I have not seen since PNSO’s very own Spinosaurus.
    The aesthetics are beautiful, and whether you want to consider it a Suchomimus, Siamosaurus, or even just “Sinopliosaurus”, this is a model that is worthy of consideration, even as a symbol of the convoluted paths our dinosaurs sometimes take from bonebed to book.

    I really appreciate you reviewing this model and all the in depth info on spinosaurids. I do think it is a beautiful model still despite being highly speculative and I think it looks nicely next to the 2020 Spinosaurus. That said I do hope for a proper Suchomimus and/or Baryonyx from them some day, as well as a larger version of the 2020 Spinosaurus.

      You're most welcome and I'm always happy when people are interested in the science parts as well! I do make little corrections and amendments in the description box, and there is one that I included in this as well.
      I really haven't paid as much to theropods, especially spinosaurids compared to sauropods and ceratopsians, but they are really pretty incredible despite superficially similar bauplans. I really hope we'll get a more complete spinosaurid some day, which will help us fill a lot of the gaps in our knowledge. Imagine how different the spinosaurids might look in ten years' time. Already people are starting to reconstruct Spinosaurus as a biped again!
      Who knows what PNSO might do with it when they finally get round to a fuller 1:35 Spinosaurus. I'm sure it will be spectacular!

    You managed to get this review out on my birthday :) this is a really interesting figure for me because spinosaurids are my favorite… but I agree with the fragmentary nature of the family being annoying…I’m usually more picky with my PNSO figures and their accuracy, for example I passed on there iguanodon due to the controversial skull shape…but despite all the problems with this figure I can’t help but really like it despite its very odd bottom teeth…it’s a figure I’m going to need to think about and probably rewatch this review many times for before I pull the trigger on getting it but we’ll see what happens… either way great video as always keep up the good work :)

      @ Oscar Valdes Thank you! Indeed, in some ways, this dinosaurs is more 'acceptable' than Iguanodon, simply because we know so much about the latter with so many fossils, that our idea of what an Iguanodon _should_ look like is going to be quite close to reality. So when we don't get that, it's a bit more egregious than something outrightly speculative, but still conforming to generally agreed features of the group bauplan.
      Happy birthday to you! I hope you got yourself something good! 😉😉

It's sad when a hobby or interest actually causes more unhappiness and consternation. And considering what's happening on the larger stage of the world today, I wish that more collectors were united in a common love of dinosaurs on the macro level, and not find something to argue about on the micro level like lips and feathers.

    Siamosaurus does have postcranial elements, for now anyways. The Khok Kruat skeleton, SM-KK 14, representa some vertebra, ribs, parts of the pelvis, a finger and some other bits, important thing here is that if the interpretation from the paper describing them is correct the dip in the "sail" PNSO depicts is highly unlikely, as far as we can tell.

    I love PNSO figures, so I won't complain. But I really can't wait to see 'The Story of Creating Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus' video by ZHAO Chuang. This Sinopliosaurus is 100% more complicated than Nanotyrannus it seems 😕As I once said, PNSO loves to lay their hands on obscure and questionable species yet their figures justify the effort they put in. This figure is just amazing no doubt about that. Love the sculpt and the pose. But I have a few opinions and suggestions to make.
    First I'd love to see the upper jaw and the lower jaw painted in one color. This two-tone color scheme makes its face a bit artificial. Then the first thing I noticed are those claws. I also would love to see some bigger claws. Then I seriously want to see some webbed hands and feet. If it's not accurate in hands, I definitely would love to see webbed feet. Then the main point I'd like to talk about is the color scheme. This is literally 'Domingo The Carnotaurus's and 'Perez The Machairoceratop's' color schemes and if we are to consider Sinopliosaurus as a spinosaurid I think I'd prefer a much different color scheme. So I'd suggest more greenish and grayish colors with no strips. Maybe a few strips here and there but not like a terrestrial predator like Carnotaurus. Because spinosaurids mostly ate fish and I think they are not ferocious like T-rexes and other terrestrial predators. And I think most of these spinosaurids spend their time alone or with their partners. So for a muddy or river environment, this color scheme is a bit heavy I think.
    Please don't get me wrong my dear Sir, this is just my idea. When I see a figure I imagine its whole life cycle so this is just my imagination. Either way, I love this figure, no doubt about that. And as you said I'll take it as a Siamosaurus for the moment until they find more fossil evidence. As always I enjoyed this long and informative video so much❤. Please keep up the good work and wish you all the best, my dear Sir.

      No worries at all Rajitha! I am happy that we all have our own ways of looking at these things, and sharing our ideas in a friendly enthusiastic way can only bring us all closer together. I see some of the acrimonious remarks and emotional arguments and it's sad that something we all love should divide us. Seems like people always find something to subdivide themselves with. That's one reason I stopped going to any forums years ago. From dinosaur models to MMA to Transformers it's all the same. (Though I still lurk on the Chinese forums from time to time to see any advance news on PNSO haha) Always feel free to share your views here! 😁
      Colour scheme is something I actually don't usually have strong feelings about myself. As long as the animal looks good and is well-painted, I know what I like and what I don't. I never noticed the similarity with Carnotaurus. As long as PNSO starts to vary even stripes if they insist on it, I am happy with it. I'm sure they know by now already what many collectors feel about this. The Chinese collectors definitely aren't shy about expressing their views! 🤣

    its one amazing figure that i consider to buy, when it first came out and saw sinopliosaurus in the name i didnt feel anything since i didnt know anything about this animal but i searched and saw the pliosaur thing going on...as siamosaurus i feel this figure works because it doesnt have a lot of material and so you can easily speculate a bit bigger size than the actual material if of course we dont see adult characteristics (which btw im curious does it have any?)
    i think its clever that pnso used characteristics of different spinosaurids as we saw in your baryonyx and suchomimus and this figure comparison at least it proves that their speculation about the rest of the body is not randomly made but still was researched even the notch it has above the hips makes sense because i did find that siamosaurus is believed to be closely related to icthyovenator who has it in a greater extent than this figure
    usually im scared to buy animals with such little material and its the reason i dont have zuchenghtyrannus yet but compared to this zuchenghtyrannus is nothing lol....but after all there are tons of fragmentary spinosaurids so i believe it will always fit somewhere so not only im confident buying this but also buying the zuchenghtyrannus i was scared to buy for accuracy reasons

      @player21099 Год назад

      Only 4 teeth were found in synopliosaurus, and zhuchengtirannus has 2 large pieces of jaw, so the difference is not fundamental, but as a percentage of the skeleton, 2 pieces of jaw are more than 4 teeth. Spinosaurids differed more from each other than tyrannosaurids, so Synopliosaurus may have a more speculative reconstruction, as well as 2 flaws on the head - the eye is just a point, and in the area of the jaws, which the author pointed out. And Synopliosaurus may not have existed.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Год назад +1

      @Fire Gator
      I believe that the tyrannosaurids we've found so far who that the bauplan is so uniform that save for a few proportional differences, you probably wouldn't go too far wrong speculating on Zhuchengtyrannus by having it pretty much based on that same bauplan.
      As @ Руслан Ситников says, spinosaurids on the other hand, have shown to be so varied in the fragments we _do_ have, that that one would be more likely to be a crapshoot. If accuracy is important and you are playing the odds, then between the ZT and this I would probably vote for the ZT being closer to any actual fossil newly uncovered in future 😁

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Год назад

      @Руслан Ситников
      Absoutely right, spinosaurids differed more widely than tyrannosaurids. In addition, the other consideration is that the actual autapomorphies identified in ZT are a lot more definite and credible, while the teeth for Sinopliosaurus _fusuiensis_ are so generic as to be next to useless for erecting a new genus ☹.
      Also oops I did not emphasize in the video enough, but I've updated my decription box with an error I made at a point. I didn't mean to say that Sinopliosaurus wasn't valid, I should have emphasized in full that "Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis" is nomen dubium. Sinopliosaurus as the name stands, refers to a plesiosaur of some sort.

    • @DinosDragons

      I would say that in fact Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis itself doesn't exist at all so there's no accuracy to talk about. But the bony anatomy it borrows from its relatives are good representations. YESSSS was looking forward to this! And I was not in the least disappointed. This is an absolutely beautiful figure, the sculpt, paint and level of detail are gorgeous, and if taken as Fabbri's Suchomimus, the scale (1:35) would be just perfect.
    Would you however say that Fabbri's illustration of the Suchomimus skeletal is inaccurate or out of date? Because if the skeletal is accurate, I would actually consider purchasing this as a Suchomimus, given how well the figure matches the skeletal, even down to the pose.
    But regardless, this makes a beautiful Siamosaurus figure, and any fan of that species should absolutely purchase this model. Looking forward to what PNSO puts out next!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Год назад +1

      I'm not sure on what the artist in the Fabbri paper based his reconstructions on. Given the recency of the paper, I would expect Fabbri to correct the artist if he thought it looked off.
      On the other hand, I've noticed that in papers, sometimes two of an identical model are used for separate genuses more as a placeholder illustration. But when I compared the two, I could see that the artist did include subtle variations including the snout and other relative proportions. So I belive he did intend Suchomimus to be Suchomimus.
      Maybe I missed out the credit though. You might like to check out the paper. It's

We are learning all the time; indeed I often have experts who know more about something than I do point out an error or at least a reasonable disagreement, and I often highlight these in my descriptions box. Just on this one someone pointed out to me that I said something that was unclear and I had to clarify that in the description box 😝😝

    It is interesting model I usually get about all of the pnso dinosaurs almost but this one is a pass on my part be of the tail I prefer a more original tail then a aquatic one it looks like a mosasaur tail in a way 😺

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Год назад +1

      Spinosaurids are so poorly known that every fragmentary find with something interesting tends to be incoroporated across all discoveries. Who knows what the tail of this or any other spinosaur might look like in real life 🤣 But you can be happy knowing you've saved some money while the rest of us slowly edge nearer to bankruptcy. 😥😥

      @ Артемий Андриевский That's how I think of it. I can live with it being nameless as long as most of the anatomy conforms to what we know, especially given the beauty of this.

    I get the racket grant seekers excel at, renaming the same fossils over & over, but a figure maker getting in on the shady grift is an all new low.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Год назад

      Lol, well I wouldn't use the word "racket", but it's hard to find another word. I myself recently commented on certain researchers who are really draaaaggging out a certain fossil, milking it for all its worth to keep the papers coming out. That said, at least each paper is detailed.
      Now toy/model makers, I'm more inclined to be forgiving, since most of their audience is going to be children anyway, and compared to the available monstrosities out there, PNSO is miles above. Even this speculative spinosaurid has the characters we associate with the group. This certainly isn't one of PNSO's must-haves, but a splendid model nonetheless if you can just call it "spinosaurid sp" 😁

    • @ronniepatterson2827
      @ronniepatterson2827 Год назад

      Yeah, I dont claim to know much about how paleontology works these days, but when I see these never before seen species, all grand & majestic with full backstories on how long they lived, how they felt about sunsets etc. - all from a single toenail or tooth, im like wtf. Course they always have the benefit of the doubt should they find a second tooth, in which they can write even more papers disproving thier earlier papers lol rince & repeat with each new tooth they find. My issue is more with that, than what a toy maker makes tbh. Course with this new model, at least PNSO ditched the whole scientifically accurate angle they use as a marketing tool. Thank you for your response to my comment Sir.@@DinosDragons

      The more I look at this Spinothing, the more I like it. Especially the paint apps, "who I usually diss from time to time " heh heh. Plus, it being kinda generic styled, guarantees its just a matter of time till we unearth a 100% match of this. Its a win win lol

      I wonder how much of it is to do with balance as well, but in general theropod arms haven't been posed to creatively (but still realistically). I hope if they do a dinosaur which features purportedly more useful arms, like the therizinosaurs and Deinocheirus, will be posed to show them off!

      Because Bauffetaut stopped short of saying so, only willing to state that it was _"closely allied"_ to Siamosaurus. It's only other people who started to link the two together. As far as I know, "Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis" still stands.

    Given this model is based on such scant evidence I’m not entirely bothered by the artist’s speculations. Like history has shown, it is often Paleoartists who have accurately depicted prehistoric animals long before the science confirms. This may one prove once again that life imitates art. Wouldn’t that be a splendid coincidence ?

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Год назад +1

      Indeed! We never know! As far as I'm concerned, I could think of this as simply "spinosaurid sp."and still be very happy with it. The important thing really, is that I know what I have, and how much is real vs how much is reasonably speculative. If it's at least reasonably speculative and I like everything else about it, I would still be very happy to have it!
