    Beyond the undisputed beauty of the model, in my opinion the best tyrannosaurid of the PNSO for the quality of the details, for the dynamic pose, I am really fascinated by the scientific part of the video, I really appreciated the explanation of how paleontologists determined a new species of tyrannosaurus from the few fossil remains of the skull found.
    Congratulations indeed for the great job you do in these videos.
    I hope the Zuchengtyrannus model will be available on aliexpress worldwide soon, I absolutely want it in my collection :)

      Thank you Massimiliano for being interested in the science part, which is a passion of mine that I hope more people can enjoy😁😁. It really does help you appreciate and understand the actual model better. I know quite a few people tend to dismiss genera based on a single bone as invalid, but thought it was a good idea to explain this one. Whether or not one is convinced, at least with the ZT they can decide if they want it. I suspect that it is so good that it will sway people to get it regardless of how they feel about ZT itself. 😊
      Last I heard, the ZT is available now on Amazon. Should be hittting PNSO's Aliexpress store soon if it hasn't already!

      This really has to be one of PNSO's best tyrannosaurids already. The only thing they could do to make it perfect would be to improve their paint apps to the quality of the 2020 Wilson. I have no doubt that an update is somewhere in our future though. Imagine how awesome that would be! 😁

    Another amazing and valuable review as always. Those scales and the skin details look so amazing. And of cause the color scheme. Even though the color scheme is a bit overused now, I think this is the best color pattern we can ask for. With Torvosaurus and Tarbosaurus we got the gray color scheme and I really can't imagine Zhuchengtyrannus in the color Gray. And especially, thank you so much for posting those articles. They are going to be an interesting read for me. Thank you so much, my dear sir. Please keep up the good work, Wish you all the best ❤

I'm sure they would do it justice!

      Fossil completeness has become more flexible for me in recent years. As I got more serious about learning about dinosaurs, I quickly realised that I had to increase my tolerance limits or else I would never buy more than half the dinosaurs out there! 😁 I'm guessing you absolutely LOVE Mercuriceratops 🤣

  • @thomasmonroe7947
    @thomasmonroe7947 2 года назад +1

    This is, absolutely, a fine looking animal.
    At least as far as the conjectural visual artistry on PNSO’s part due to very limited fossil material to work with.
    Having said that, this will be joining a family/pack diorama with Andrea.
    Not knocking Wilson off his pedestal, restless scale sculpt and all, just saying Lu Xiong really does complement her better.
    I like the idea of taking the striping down to, essentially, only the tail.
    Thank goodness for PNSO but I’m going to need a second job!
    I have a cast of a Tyrannosaurus maxilla that I bought from Mary Odano’s Valley Anatomical company years ago and found myself using it for secondary reference as you provided the very welcome in depth analysis of what’s where and how it makes a difference as juxtaposing one tyrannosaurid from another.
    Still the best done reviews going.
    Thank you for taking the time and effort to do them.

    • @DinosDragons

      I've had to work many extra hours and take on more freelance assignments for this hobby! PNSO definitely doesn't make it easy, with the frequency of offerings. I sometimes think if like most companies, they just had a few stinkers in each yearly crop, we could all take a break financially.
      I'm really delighted that you have the interest to look at the anatomy! It was very hard to find sources for this, especially relating to dinosaurs, and because so many of the landmarks aren't even named in common dinosaur textbooks. The Dinosauria is a very good source if you can find one cheap.
      I love sharing about the science and anatomy behind the dinosaur models, which is why I decided to include that in my videos even if it would take longer to make and most people really just want to see the model. I appreciate all my viewers, but some like yourself who take an extra interest in the extra material really bring me extra good cheer and delight. Thank you! 😁

      @@DinosDragons I actually own both the original and updated copy of The Dinosauria. Along with Don Glut’s Dinosaurs:The Encyclopedia and it’s 7 supplements, these are my preferred reading along with the more current Indiana Press offerings as well as certain tomes that have appeared in your videos, The Sauropod Dinosaurs being one of them.
      Over the past 15-20 years, there have been so many excellent releases of printed material, it’s almost as hard to keep up with it all as it is PNSO releases.
      Jokes aside, this is a great time to be one who sees dinosaurs as a subject coming into its own.
      When I first learned of Thomas Holtz teaching an actual class at the University of Maryland on Dinosaur Science, I was blown away.
      And that seems so long ago.
      I’m hoping that the science, interest and, especially, the figures, continues to maintain momentum.
      Fun stuff.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад

      @@thomasmonroe7947 Don Glut's Encyclopedia is one that I never got. When it came out I couldn't afford it financially, and when I was it was already quite a few years out of date. The Dinosauria is my go to book but it's obviously old now. I wrote to Dr Weishampel and he did say they were working on a new edition, but couldn't confirm anything. I suppose the pandemic doesn't do anyone's plans any favours as well.
      I loved Dr Holtz's encyclopedia but in a flash it's 14 years already. I did write to ask him if there were plans for another years ago, but he was rather short about it so I assumed it's not something he was actively pursuing.
      I'm always excited to ask viewers into this for recommendations. What's the latest book on dinosaurs/ prehistoric fauna along more academic lines you have? With the speed of publications the way I keep up to date is with journal articles, but I'd sure like one thick book capturing _most_ of the current information and science in one place for a main reference! 😁

      @thomasmonroe7947 2 года назад

      @@DinosDragons There are so many great , in depth, books but, as you pointed out, they can get dated fairly quickly. Doesn’t devalue the information, necessarily.
      Glut’s work had the benefit of being added to in a supplemental fashion that ended after supplement 7.
      Still my favorite series of books.
      It’s been a couple of years since anything has caught my eye but, for tomes of more science oriented interest, ‘The Hadrosaurs’ from David Eberth, is good.
      ‘New Perspectives on Horned Dinosaurs’ from Ryan Chinnery-Allgeier and Eberth, is another.
      It’s as compelling a hunt to find the great books as much as great figural representations.
      If you’d like a copy of Glut’s first initial tome, I actually have more than one copy you are most welcome to, gratis.

    Finally! I was waiting on bated breath for this review. Yet again, a fantastic look at a fantastic model. And thank you for explaining the autapomorphies that distinguish Zhuchengtyrannus. I've tried long and hard to understand how this taxon is different from Tarbosaurus and Tyrannosaurus, but with all the complicated terminology involved (and my own lack of perseverance), to little avail, so to have such a clear explanation is a blessing! Thank you!
    As for the model itself, well it's a PNSO model, I think that says enough. This is in the Goldilocks zone in terms of muscle; the Tyrannosaurus was a bit too lean, and the Tarbosaurus was absolutely juiced (compared to the rex, I just wish the rex was muscled like the Tarbosaurus, I liked the bulk on the Tarbosaurus). The Zhuchengtyrannus looks perfect though. I was hoping they'd make a Zhuchengtyrannus, but after they made their Tarbosaurus, that hope was a bit sated. More recently, I'd been hoping for an Albertosaurus, like you, but I was still excited to see this, and I am gonna buy it ASAP. I also hope they make a Xiongguanlong, the only other model is by CollectA, when they were still making Nicki Minaj-esque theropod models.
    Stay safe, and Happy Valentine's!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад +1

      You're most welcome! I'm extremely fascinated by anatomy. It does take some perserverance as the descriptions in the papers are often bone dry. Not to mention some of the features on bones aren't so easy to identify without a really good model to follow along 😊.
      I thought it would be a good idea to try to explain some of it. Especially as there is plenty of scepticism regarding naming of something from such sparse remains. But it took me a while to understand that while T rex looked like Tarbosaurus they really were different, and that relates often to the minutiae of anatomy. As you can see the ZT might well look the same as T Rex if one was chasing you!
      Xiongguanlong would be an excellent choice for PNSO! It actually has decent fossil remains, would go well with the longirostrine Qianzhousaurus, is a primitive tyrannosaur, and it's Chinese (so PNSO shoudl easily have acccess to the fossils).
      PS: Every now and again a viewer will write something I wish I'd thought to say myself. "Goldilocks zone" is a great phrase to use!

      @@DinosDragons Absolutely, with such little visual aid, it's a nightmare, especially if you don't know what to look for. This sure beats having 30 Chrome tabs open with each one being another anatomical term, much appreciated.
      Yup, good call. Though these are very similar animals, there are a number of pretty unique differences between them, so it's good to explain their differences. 🤣 Right you are, I won't be looking for the antorbital fossa or degree of binocular vision if I saw one. Not like I'd even have the time, unless it assumes I'm unappetizing, I'd be lunch before I could even say "look out, giant tyrannosaur that can't be distinguished further without a thorough look at its anatomy!".
      It sure is. Not to mention a pretty important transitional species in the tyrannosauroid family. And it'd nullify the need for another Xiongguanlong ever again.
      😅 What can I say? I heard the term as a youngling describing Earth's place in the Solar System, and it's stuck ever since.

      Unfortunately, it does seem that they may have switched to a different provider for their recent run. I actually really do like this one, but there is a general muddiness that I did not see last year. And I also note that there was a point last year where I stopped doing release image comparisons because they were getting so close. Hopefully PNSO can look into this. Quite a few people have commented about this on the Chinese forums and I know PNSO is definitely on them.

      @Knyght Errant I definitely agree with you. Interestingly the Pachyrhinosaurus is my favourite ceratopsian from them, even if it has the old more oversized scales. The paint job is really amazing. In fact I loved it so much that I recently ordered another one when there was a sale in China. Unfortunately, that was a new repaint version, and as you can imagine, inferior to that first one.
      As for the Parasaurolophus, that represents to me a period before this one where in-hand models were starting to match up very well with the release images. In fact I'd stopped doing comparisons at that time. They must have switched to a different provider for the paint work.

      As for an updated Wilson, PNSO is pretty closed mouth about it. My guess is that they have been working to improve many aspects of their process, so that when they do drop a new Wilson, it would be near perfect. I totally agree with your point on the sparcity of the fossil evidence on this particular model. As with almost any aspect of science, the greater the sample size, the more reliable the outcome of the study. Applying that to the reconstruction of dinosaurs, the more bones from different body regions available, the better the chances of making an accurate reconstruction of the whole body. Taking into account the lack of actual fossils of the limbs and torso of this species, as well as having proportions that are pretty close to T. rex, I would also just take this figure as a younger and better detailed version of Wilson 🙂

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад +1

      I couldn't agree more! I think this would do every well for most people as an updated T Rex. This isn't like Ceratopsians where you can just guess at the whole animal based on one fragment, because of all that cranial ornamentation. Tyrannosaurs are - for better or worse - some of the most boringly similar animals, but that's because it's a bauplan that's obviously worked over the ages for them!
      Similarly, I really couldn't be too excited with naming of Tyrannosaurus _imperator_ or _regalis_ because they would just look too similar, unless you mess with levels of 'gracileness' whatever that means.

      It's always a point of argument. There is no 100% strict cut off for how many characters you need over how many individuals to separate species and even genera. So it's always best to read the original paper and see if you agree or not. Looking at a lot of human skeletons, I wonder how many separate species some future alien civilisation finding our remains would nominate! 🤣

    It really seems like the paint jobs on PNSO figures are a little bit hit or miss on an individual case basis - some seem to have phenomenal paint jobs while others have some obvious sloppy elements to them - strange, but even so, they're WORLDS better than, say, Mattel's Jurassic World line for the money. I just wish they'd actually go a bit bigger - 1:20 or 1:15 scale I think would be better - 1:20 scale would mean that a T. Rex would be a bit over 2 feet or about 0.7 meters long, which is sizeable but not TOO overwhelmingly big like Mattel's Super Colossal Giganotosaurus which is about a meter long (3.28 feet), and even in the case of a 28 meter / 90'ish sauropod, you'd be looking at a 1.4 meter long animal at that scale which is BIG, but at least justifiable given that it's a sauropod.
    I think if they did that, it'd be worth the inevitable price increase because it would allow for EVEN MORE detail and more careful paint application whereas the 1:35 scale is small enough that slight mistakes can easily be made when working at such a small scale.
    Anyway, just a thought. I'd love a 1:20 scale line, and I feel it'd be perfect, but honestly the 1:35 scale also works for those who don't have a house (like myself) who move a lot and don't have space for so many big figures.
    BTW I'm guessing from your pronunciation of Zhuchengtyrannus that you are from southern China (specifically if I had to guess, somewhere in the region around HK), am I wrong? I say this because my wife is too and there's that softer pronunciation of the ZH and CH sounds ;)

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад

      Wow... that 1:20 scale T Rex is going to be huge, and possibly as a one off I could see them offering something like their Ceratosaurus. But besides all the real estate taken up, it would cost a bomb in both model and shipping. This means they need to return to hollow vinyl like with their old figures, something they do seem keen to do.
      Haha no I'm not from Southern China. My mother who taught us without any accent. I guess it would be the Chinese version of Received Pronunciation, trying to keep the accent quite neutral. But I _am_ pretty close to Hong Kong 😁
      Are you in China as well? That would make it easy and cheap for you to get these PNSOs! And if they did release a 1:20 some day, it would obviously cost you a lot less.
      By the way, did you see the release annoncement for a 1:10 bronze T Rex? If you happened to just have $10k lying around...

      Even though there's only a fragmentary find of the macula, you can still pretty much tel what the rest of the body would of looked like, by using other tyrannosaursids like rex. Since they have a similar macula. So it isn't so far fetched about the body, it may of looked similar to rex in proportions.

    • @firegator6853
      @firegator6853 2 года назад +1

      both are very realistic and very well represent different certain individuals in my opinion and i like them both a lot
      tarbosaurus manages to represent an old individual that really rules its territory, the fat on the belly and base of the tail i believe its a nice way to showcase how successful it is, in nature it's hard for animals to get fat especially ones that have competition but it never is impossible, there are pictures of lions that are well fed and also in the africa where competition is massive meanwhile tarbosaurus was the top predator of it's formation so i like to assume it just either used its power and managed to kill something big to eat or happened to find an already dead big meal and no one can steal it from it except other tarbosaurus
      zuchengtyrannus manages to capture a more slim individual that its been long time since it ate and now it looks for food in it's habitat it might also be younger than tarbosaurus in age as it's body looks more perfect in shape unlike tarbosaurus who seems to have more scars and have a bit of a more curve on the back something that old animals have due to stress on their spine in their lifetimes
      i already have tarbosaurus and i will 100% get this zuchengtyrannus i always loved this animal or at least the way people reconstruct it since its very fragmentary and pnso managed to give it a nice special look even if we lack the majority of its body

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад +2

      I mean, it's not as exciting, but within reasonable limits, one can postulate how an animal might have looked like thought comparative anatomy and phylogenetic bracketing. But while a bone can give you an _idea_ of the _general_ bauplan, it couldn't tell you all the details. For example, you might recognize Shunosaurus as definitely a sauropod. But if you didn't know it had a tail club you would have just reconsctructed it like a sauropod in general. The little, interesting, unique details will always be missed.

    Only thing that bother me is the very dark paint on the feature scales of the mouth, as well as lack of wash that tarbosaurus has. If you want me to show them just hit me up on Instagram, username is the same as here. Thank you! I think I've seen those photos, they are of an as yet undescribed tyrannosaurid that may or may not belong to Zhuchengtyrannus. Remember a while ago there was a bit of stink regarding Nanotyrannus and how PNSO was inexplicably including it? I believe it has to do with the fact that there are many in China who have reasons to consider its validity.

They have also gotten very expensive in comparison to previous releases.
