151: PNSO Olorotitan (Ivan 2021) Review

  • We have another hadrosaur from PNSO, and this time, on two legs!
    This is the Russian lambeosaurines Olorotitan, the Titanic Swan. And that characteristic long neck and hatchet crest are faithfully recreated here by PNSO. Adding to its already impressive lineup of hadrosaurs, PNSO gives us a hadrosaur in a rearing pose this time, and I am absolutely loving the variety it gives my hadrosaurs.
    With remarkable scale detail and colour fades that are an absolute delight, this rearing Olorotitan is a hadrosaur must-have for hadrosaur fans!

    When I heard of the release of Ivan I was elated! I have Olorotitans in the opening chapter of my second book and this model is exactly how I envisaged them. This is one of the best models to be released in my opinion. I liked your comparison with the other lambeosaurs! And yes, PNSO do need to release an Edmontosaurus!

      I'm glad you like this one!
      PNSO is an example of how, by generating enough love and respect by giving quality, you can then start to expand into newer and less heard-of dinosaurs, and actually get people (and children!) to want to learn more beyond the standard crowd-pleasers!
      Although there has been an occasional lack of consistency in paint apps and people _are_ concerned about the rising prices, I think PNSO has really pulled ahead of many other companies because they produce models _most_ dinosaur lovers would appreciate.
      The other hadrosaurs, when I look at them again, really were an indication of things to come. Even now, when I look at the Lambeosaurus and the Corythosaurus, I feel their quality is right up there, and even the integument was already showing some of the higher levels PNSO would be able to reach.

      Thank you very much Rajitha!
      I never really wanted to make just straight toy reviews, as I want to also share my love of these amazing creatures. This isn't to the taste of most people, and if I were to skip the 'extras' my reviews could be shorter and probably a couple days earlier if I just did straight reviews. So I'm grateful to have viewers like you who do like my content, and kinds words like yours are very much appreciated!
      I hope to continue making more of these videos, and continue to add information and knowledge that would help more people appreciate these prehistoric creatures.
      I hope that you will one day get some PNSOs... I guess it's tougher for some places to get them... but really I know how much it would mean to have just one or two favourites! 😁

    Oh yeah! This will be my next PNSO purchase.
    It’s very well done and the pose is great.
    And, like others, I’d like to see the behemoth hadrosaurs like Edmontosaurus done in 1/35.
    The near sauropod sized hadrosaurs are/were just amazing.
    I think that doing sauropod or sauropod sized animals in 1/35 is very doable.
    Nanmu, even though it’s not accurate, managed it by making their Apatosaurus in two pieces easily fitted together with minimal effort and using hollow vinyl. It’s about 24 inches in length and still available from BigBadToyStore for right around $70.
    I like the solid figures..W-Dragons’
    huge Brachiosaurus a prime, large example...but I don’t mind very well rendered hollow figures such as the beautiful PNSO Ceratosaurus.
    I’m very glad PNSO continues to present well sculpted and highly accurate figures.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад

      I'm completely with you on the 1:35 sauropods! They used to have those hollow PVCs, and like you say, Nanmu has certainly shown it can be done, as well as W-Dragon.
      The 1:45 Mamenchisaurus would have been perfect for many sauropod/ dinosaur lovers _except_ for that small scale, so I hope PNSO can do a CBA and find a way to still give us awesome sauropod models. It is one thing to have them really nice and accurate, but for a sauropod when you remove the larger size, you remove one of the most iconic and impressive things about this magnificent group.
      As PNSO has shown with their Shantungosaurus, if they did the large behemoth-sized hadrosaurs to show the diversity of size and scale, it would really be impressive. I never learnt how big hadrosaurs could get till just a few years ago, and it would be amazing to have that conveyed in a 1:35 from PNSO someday!

    • @thomasmonroe7947
      @thomasmonroe7947 2 года назад

      These huge animals would have been something to see, for sure.
      Probably had few issues with predators if they managed to achieve maturity.
      I never saw hadrosaurs as being dull fodder for rampaging meat eaters. Like most non-avian dinosaurs, I found them all to be of interest.
      Even as a kid in the 60’s, I knew the manner in which they were portrayed, scientifically as well as in popular entertainment, was incorrect.
      Even then, not having a clue about the meaning of the word ‘physiology’, the “science” made no sense to me.
      Always glad to see another representation that breaths life into my favorite group of extinct animals.

    Pleased for another Hadrosaur from PNSO and will certainly purchase . Can’t help but notice the pes are absolutely dainty as with earlier models like the Lambeosaurus . Hopefully this will not affect the balance as with the others . From your review , the model appears to lack the detail offered to last year’s Parasaurolophus in regards to the limbs . Another point of contention is the twisting of the torso , which PNSO has repeated with all four . The Hadrosauridae featured ossified tendons along the spine which would result in a stiff and rigid body . Disappointed that PNSO has not afforded the attention to detail given to theropods .

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад

      Thank you very much for your comment. Very astute observation on the tail! Yes the trellis of ossified tendons would have interfered with the lateral range of motion of the tail. I do recall reading a paper on the histology of these tendons suggesting they would not have been completely stiff, so some lateral motion might have been possible (they seem to be very strong against hogging however so definitely I would say no droopy tails). However I couldn't find that paper now (possibly a 1996 paper if anyone knows).
      There is certainly more fine detail on the Parasaurolophus, although I put that down to it simply being bigger and therefore having a larger canvas to work with. Personally having them side by side, I don't find it irksome but of course, some people pick up these details more sensitively than I do.
      The almost spindly limbs has definitely been noted by many people and I daresay I wouldn't mind them a little bit thicker, especially the forelimbs. Stability-wise, you definitely have to use the stand. What I notice is that bipeds that balance on two legs are more sensitive to subtle changes in surface inclination or even the strength of my air-conditioner currents! And even if they are pretty stable, there's still the issue of warping if you are living in hot and humid climes.

      @ArawnsFire 2 года назад

      @@DinosDragons ; The pes of PNSO’s Nanotyrannus and Pachycephalosaurus are even smaller yet , are exquisitely sculpted and well proportioned . Perhaps someone else sculpted the these hadrosaurs because aside from the Parasaurolophus the other Hadros share similar sculpting styles .

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 года назад +1

      You mean your only concern is stability? I will say that on different surfaces, it won't stand on its own because most flat surfaces tend to have different inclines. For example on my study desk this stands but leans to the left, and on another table it won't stand at all. So the provided stand is definitely a must.
      Actually it is a must in any case since these dinosaurs tend to warp over time, especially in hot humid countries.

      That one is truly impressive, and at its size even the older style scalation doesn't look to out of place. However my problem was the stability. Mine does not stand at all. It actually is. But I think it has to be in order to keep to a 1:35 scale, which actually makes it nice to see the variety of shapes and sizes if your collection is mainly 1:35 too.

    What a beautiful, unexpected and surprising model from PNSO.
    Now the hadrosaurs herd is complete although I always hope PNSO will make a new Shantungosaurus.
    Great review as always!

      I would absolutely love a new Shantungosaurus! I didn't really like the colouration of the previous one and I gave it away to some children only too delighted to have them, but to have one done now with the modern level of sculpting of this monstrous hadrosaur (in the same 1:35 scale please!), would be really splendid!
