  • The Worcester Steam Express. LMS jubilee 45596 Bahamas was booked to work the trip from Norwich to Worcester Shrub Hill and back, but was replaced with Ian Riley’s Black 5 44871 due to the mk2 stock needing an air braked loco.
    An early start would allow me to get to Melton Mowbray for the opening shots. This was a gamble as I had a feeling the locals would come out in force but it wasn’t too bad in the end. The train , working 1Z79 and now running 18 minutes behind schedule would mean the stopper behind it wouldn’t get me into Birmingham New Street in time to get the Hereford train as far as Droitwich Spa. Luckily I was able to quickly change and make it to Droitwich with enough time to get to a foot crossing in Ladywood Droitwich. With little time to set both cameras up I ended up submerged in mud on the way to the crossing but still with enough time to catch 44871 on the last leg to Worcester.
    Now with the mayhem out the way it was a steady commute to Vigo Bridge on the notorious 1 in 37.7 Lickey Incline. It was obvious the diesel was going to be giving it a shove with 11 coaches on the back, but the majority of the work was produced by the Black 5. The black smoke a clear indication that the fireman was working hard on the 2 mile climb to Blackwell.
    Another great day out with good company at Vigo. ‪@LiamsLocos‬ ‪@crunchynutsteamfilms5043‬ ‪@GreatBritishRailways1‬ ‪@James_Trains‬ ‪@JakeBSteam‬

    I caught that tour myself twice at the junction of stoke works
    And this is the third time I get to see 44871 but it’s also the first time I get to see a steam hauled tour to come to the junction for this year

    Hard work for the fireman!

    Most steam-hauled trains used to get a banker up the Lickey, so it should not be a surprise the diesel was giving some help.
    Personally, I think they should help, just a little, more often to help preserve these 80+ year old locos.

    I was on the train but you couldn't hear much inside an aircon Mk2 so it's good to hear and see it from outside, rounds off the experience! Well done for your efforts in trekking around to get the shots!

    Very good Luke , certainly going well with plenty of assistance from the 47 but that’s to be expected up that bank .

      After all a Black 5 with anything approaching that load would have been banked in steam days. Thanks in general to the community of steam railway video posters for helping us see these occasions from the comfort of our own homes, and for your respect and support of each other.

      Pointless having mainline certified locos - you can stick any loco on the front, some oily rags in the smokebox and push it round with a derv

      @@iankemp1131it was too heavily loaded for the 5 on its own. Jubilees were limited to 5/6 coaches without support as otherwise they'd stall and get stuck

      Banked to save water as there were no watering points between Gloucester and Leicester. It is also as stated well over the limit for a 5, these are prized heritage assets, no point in flogging them to death unnecessarily

    Good to see you at the Lickey Incline again, was surprised how many were there for the return considering it was me and 1 other gentleman there outwards. See you the 14th, I've just been given the timings of it leaving Cheltenham 😊

    Diesel working quite hard at the back but incredible steam train footage, especially the first shot. Looked like they did in the last years of steam. unlike so many preserved steam runs that have engines in brighter liveries that no one can remember.

    hi there. why don't the clowns put a banker loco at the rear or is the 47 assisting ?

    A pox on the ugly diesel on the back. 44871 sounding good!

    • @PolishThatHandle346
      @PolishThatHandle346 5 месяцев назад +1

      Without the diesel the loco wouldn't have got up the bank. Steam loco was all first valve - was all for show. Pretty sure 9600 has lost her cert now but that would be the best candidate to see a proper Lickey banker charge.

    Just out of interest, how is communication between the steam engine and the diesel banker work? I mean are controls handled by two-radio verbal communication or is there a direct wired link between the steam drivers controls and the diesel loco at the rear. How does it work?

      Do you think it would have been sensible to send a solo class 5 up 1 in 37 with 11 coaches? LSL always have a diesel on the back too

  • @PolishThatHandle346
    @PolishThatHandle346 5 месяцев назад

    Bit far fetched to suggest 44871 was working hard up the Lickey - probably worked harder shunting coaching stock and felt like it was all first valve 'for show' exhaust more than anyrhing. The 47 was clearly pushing the consist and doing the bulk of the work which was far too heavy for the 5 on its own anyway. Pushing diesels seems to be a fairly consistent occurrence with WCR tours

      The lickey incline is a continuous climb of 1 in 37.7 for 2 miles. The train was stopped at stoke works junction to wait for a unit to proceed ahead of it. The black exhaust wasn’t ’for show’ it’s a sign of the coal igniting and that the fireman is working hard to keep the steam up. The feather of steam at the safety valves shows the loco had plenty of steam too. The 47 was indeed giving the train a good push.
