50007+50049. Mega Struggle & Thrash up Lickey Incline. The Christmas White Rose Express.

  • I think this was the slowest passenger train I have ever seen coming up the Lickey Incline, but it was a great sight to see.
The problems seam to have started with a late departure from Gloucester, one guy told us when we was waiting for the railtour that 50049 was not in the best of heath, so that could of been the reason why they struggled up the incline as I think 50007 was doing most of the work.
I only had seconds getting the shot at Water Orton, and I didn't think I would get there in time.

A great video. I was on the tour and can confirm that the Lickey was an absolute stagger. However the 50s performed superbly for the rest of the tour. There are a team of expert fitters from the Class 50 Alliance on board who keep these wonderful machines running for us all to enjoy. Thanks for posting.

Also, I’m not there, you were, but just listening to them it doesn’t sound as loud as I remember them being when they used to pull out of Exeter St Davids - single engine with say 10 behind - heading up towards Tiverton.

Excellent video, I was at Gloucester this morning, and believe that the issue up until that point was the generator van cutting out and the train losing the electrical supply. Certainly before the 50's were coupled on, the ETH cables were plugged in between the 2 loco's, and then onto the stock. If one loco was hauling 13 plus a dead loco, and supplying ETH it would explain why the climb of the Lickey became such a stagger

That was a heavy train. I remember the Royal Scot steam hauled with 12 coaches back in the 60s out of Preston and would have been assisted over Shap and Beatock. When the 50s were moved to be coupled up at Preston later the premium trains were double headed with the Class 50s; at the time the Railway Magazine commented that Beatock was easily climbed with the pair at Notch 4. The Lickey aint Beatock though?

In various early 1970s back numbers of railway magazines, there are timing logs from the likes of Cecil J Allen which recorded some brilliant [and not so brilliant] journeys. As Weaver-Glasgow modernisation got under way the double-fifties were diagrammed to take over said "premium trains" at Crewe, then indeed subsequently at Preston once the overheads were energised as far as there. My father travelled from Watford to Carlisle on business once during that era [1973 IIRC]; he was under the impression that the same "lecky" was powering the train and was astonished when he alighted to find diesels on the front. Shap and Beattock are a breeze compared to Lickey!

@@antman09ful1 A special video that one and I used to live not far from there, and that's probably the slowest I've seen too. At one time the section from Bromsgrove to Blackwell had an intermediate colour light signal just south of Pikes Pool Lane bridge, so that a second train could enter the section once the first train had cleared the intermediate signal. @@antman09ful1 You give a somewhat typical reaction here. Every viewer of your video will see a different number on this loco than what you mention. It therefore seems only logical to me to respond to this.
Your reaction comes across as rather bizarre as if everyone should know exactly what the numbers on this locomotive are like. Perhaps you should realize that not everyone dives into this matter as deeply as you apparently do. And by the way, that's not really necessary either, you could just get a bit more realistic!

    • @antman09ful1

Another number this loco has carried is 50014 but it will still have 50007 on the other side.
