If the film started with Aurora walking up, meeting Jim, falling in love, then finding out he woke her up, it would have been an amazing twist. I loved it regardless, just saying.
We could have the last half be a horror movie, with jim being huge freak from the event of him spending a year alone, that he wanted more of her and will get what he want.
For me, the ending ruined the whole film. I actually loved Jim's point of view and how it was shown that his decision wasn't rash and could even be understandable, although it was really disappointing how easily the movie moved over Aurora's point of view. But what if the ending had went like this: Chris Pratt dies a hero, Aurora is left alone on the ship and we'd skip ahead a year, maybe a montage. At first she'd almost be doing alright, swimming, running, writing and whatnot, she'd miss Jim and talk of him with the bartender. Getting more and more lonely she'd started to go a bit mad, one day she's going through Jim's drawers sniffing his clothes, crying for her loneliness, crying for him, she then finds the pod manual, she throws it away screaming she'd never take someone's life like hers was taken. Finally she'd end up in the same place Jim was; about to jump off the ship. Similarly to Jim, she'd run back to the pods, and then someone would catch her eye, the movie would then end her staring at that someone and we'd know she is going to do what Jim did. This would keep the question, should we understand the drowning man drowning another, unanswered or further explored. I thought the philosophical question, would you wish someone on a deserted island with you, was the most interesting part of the movie which the ending disregarded completely...
People would see that twist coming a mile away, though, since he'd be the only other character in the film. And then people would complain it was too obvious
Or her killing him, out of self defense or rage, and finding herself in his position and wavering on the brink of opening up someone else's pod for company.
@@christianpersson2137 I had the same thought when watching the movie. Jim as a psychopath who wakes up whoever he fancies, and always ends up killing her when she rejects him or learns the truth. Aurora finds a body or two, or better still, empty hibernation pods (Jim threw his victims into space) and Jim has to come up with a crazy story. Aurora wants to believe him because she loves him, but remains suspicious. She starts to investigate, maybe the android guy says something that contradicts Jim's story... That would have been a great movie! I mean, it's been done before, but never IN SPACE!
Or if Jennifer eventually kills a deranged Chris. Shes alone for a year, going down the same path as Chris, and eventually, faces the same loneliness, and the movie ends with her about to open another pod.
This would of been such a great horror film. Imagine at the bar scene Arthur says to Aurora "You're my favourite one he's woken up". Pretends everything is fine with Jim. Then realises like 100 of the pods near hers are empty. Then discovers the bodies in the cargohold. Jim actually has been awake for like 5 years and has gone insane turned serial killer waking people up one by one only to eventually kill them.
I've seen this movie twice and while watching this video I got *chills* when he said, "Yes, I woke you up." Like damn. Awesome editing, bro! This movie would have been a lot better if it had been a psychological thriller/horror movie sort of like The Shining meets space travel.
I saw today a deleted scene where she finds the hibernation pod manual in his sock drawer. A little more terrifying than seeing it on a table in this shot.
I liked this film but the film from Jennifer Lawrence's point of view makes it so much better. A better reason for the ships malfunctioning would have been good. Maybe Chris Pratt does it secretly for some reason or that barman is secretly evil.
"barman is secretly evil" problem: alcohol was just prohibited on homestead 2 and all boozenaut models are to be recycled solution: redirect ship and keep ship population at a sustainable level - passengers will continue to order drinks for millenia
I mean, at one point, sooner or later, one of them must die before the other; being it of old age or illness. So regardless of the ending scene where the rest of the passengers wake up to find out that some couple had their lifetime spent on-board the ship, either Aurora or Jim have actually spent the last part of life alone in misery after losing their life long and only partner / social being. Oh, poor Arthur for having to deal with this shit.
Such a wasted potential! This could've been a very interesting sci-fi horror/thriller film, but it just turned out to be just your typical vapid "love" story only with sci-fi backdrops.
Here’s the best version imo: -Starts with her waking up, them falling in love, her finding out the truth, and then shows some of the scenes of him contemplating waking her up -then goes on to have the same dramatic thing with the spaceship failing and him saving them and then her saving his life and her forgiving him -THEN it’s showing them living happily ever after -EXCEPT -interspersed we see a flashback montage of all the girls he’s woken up before 🙃
While I do agree the movie should've been from her perspective, I think it had more potential as a psychological thriller/drama than a horror movie. Chris is just not treathening enough :D
A part of message of this movie for me is the evolution of jack torrance's mind in shining, also the barman dressed the same as the ghost shining bar. Only important difference that his nightmare becomes a wonderful dream thanks to her.
I'm sure this version of the script was considered but rejected because they wanted the story to be lighter and family friendly and the Chris Pratt Jim character to be likeable. But the recut would have made a much more compelling story. And the Jim character could still be redeemed at the end.
I agree. they had to do re-shoots before it was released trying to fix the plot problems from the audience response and feedback. Had they just given up the idea that Chris’s character needed to be likable and go with what would actually work, it would’ve been a much more bankable and well liked Film
I would have liked it if the ship woke both of them up and they realize they have limited resources and Katniss Everdeen wins the hunger games again but has to kill Peeta 2.0 in order to survive.
Just like the original ending but extended a little bit. Not much later they have a Child, Jim refused to let his child died of old age alone, reasoning if waking up every crew member onboard (Fishburn's character revealed that there is a crew) then someone must know how to fix the cryo-pods. Aurora thinks it's a little bit unethical since she was a victim of this, but her child must come first. So they wake up a whole crew at the same time. Jim's hunch was correct, someone on that crew did know how to fix the pods and they did, even Jim's cryopod that got damaged. As everybody went back to sleep again, this time Jim and Aurora face another dilemma, there is an extra passenger, their child and there isn't enough cryopods. Jim decided to give up his cryopod for his son and stay alone on the ship and die of old age, but this time he choose to do so. At the very end, after everybody went back to sleep, Jim was alone on the ship, again.... Aurora walks in and choose to stay with him. I think this way Jim atones for waking up Aurora and made a sacrifice for his child, and Aurora also made a sacrifice as mother and for love to Jim (after all wasnt this what Aurora's friend wishes her to find? someone that loves her?)
Try this for size: Starts with her waking up, goes through all the stuff leading to romance, she finds out he woke her up, Fishburne wakes up and ship begins to fail, shows them how to fix and gives access code and bracelet, they fix ship but Jim dies, Aurora goes through what Jim did and makes her own fateful decision. Ends with the crew and passengers awakening but they are in the middle of the journey. She used her access to wake them all up early as Jim did to her.
I agree this movie should be recut from her perspective it's a much better less predictable movie more suspense I agree I've been thinking about this myself this is a much better recut
The beginning could be the same with the astetoids on the ship and a malfunctioned pod, but the instead of Jim waking up its Aurora. And then when you figure it out they show the year that’s Jim was alone.
Everyone talks about how cool it would be for a men to be a psycho, would have been even better having aurora be a psycho and making him regret his decision . Like : pad girl number 456 dies . Aurora : you kind of look at her for more than 3 seconds .
I think the movie had a lot of wasted potential. However the twist of Chris Pratt waking JLaw's character up would be kind of predictible. I'm quite sure everyone would have guessed the twist since the beginning, in my opinion.
