- This month's theme is Ape-ril... all ape movies! ...and we're bananas about it! Tony and James are reviewing Monkey Shines, in our two different Cinemassacre Video locations just to be safe!
In the film, a quadriplegic man has a trained monkey help him with his paralysis, until the little monkey begins to develop feelings, and rage, against its new master. Athlete Allan (Jason Beghe) becomes quadriplegic after a horrific traffic accident. His friend Geoffrey (John Pankow), who is conducting experiments with monkeys, offers Allan a well-trained monkey named Ella to keep him company and raise his spirits. But the initially healthy bond, which even enables Allan to form a romantic relationship with Melanie (Kate McNeil), gradually disintegrates once Ella begins to channel Allan's underlying rage and takes it out on his loved ones.
It's "Ape-ril" all April at Cinemassacre Video!!!

Hey! I’m a fan! Greetings from Illinois!
Video worked out pretty well gj guys
james like this if you like BIG RIGS
No Planet of The Apes, any of the sequels, nor remakes. -_- how
Anyone else remember the movie Project X, the movie about the military using monkeys to see the results of nuclear weapons on pilots in the airforce?
I got to meet Romero when I was in film school, I figured everyone always talks about the dead movies with him. I told my favorite of movie of his was actually Martin and he was so happy to talk about it; said it was he's favorite too. Held up everyone else wanting to talk with him, man that made all the money spent worth it he could not have been more awesome and heart felt.
Honestly Cinnemassacre has become the top escapism you can get right now. Hours and hours and hours of content, doing God's work over there boys!
This movie was spoofed in the show Malcolm in the Middle. Lois' coworker Craig hires a monkey to care for him after he is injured and confined to a wheelchair.
Then the monkey starts kicking his ass
Omg I vividly remember that growing up and it messed with me and I never knew what it was from, holy shit
I still remember the fear craig had toward that monkey and i think malcolms dad tried to help him and the monkey stared kicking his ass too
I never seen this movie, but as they're explaining the plot, I thought "wait, wasn't that a Malcolm in the Middle episode?"
wow forgot about that thanks for reminding me
The Nerd once used that "You're slime, you're filth, etc." quote, and I since then I wondered where it was from.
What episode was it from anyone know?
It's from the Bible Games 3 episode. He says it when he's chasing the monkeys around in the Noah's Ark game
When I was a little kid I Thought Monkey Shine was about a killer monkey doll because of the VHS box cover lol
Same, honestly. I remember seeing it in the video store and thinking that.
(also, if you want a killer monkey doll story, check out The Monkey in the collection Skeleton Crew by Stephen King)
Me too. I was very disappointed when i found out it wasnt.
Same here thought it may be related to stephen king book skeleton crew too. Same kind of monkey picture.
Me too lol
Same here. Seeing clips of it in this video, I realize its not at all like what I thought it would be.
James should stay on that monitor from now on and just be like a Zordon.
i like how he chose an old flickering monitor, it's so james.
while mike's chillin on the ipad, a good dynamic.
Or Holly from Red Dwarf.
I just flicked on the tv as I read this comment and the power rangers movie reboot is on. Freaky.
holy shit, you right lol
@@aliensanonymous5063 I need 3 movie reviewers with attitude.
There is an excellent three-hour interview with the star of this film, Jason beghe, talking about getting sucked into Scientology and then getting out. as far as I know he is the only person ever to receive a refund from Scientology.
"Human blood... God save us!"
*Suddenly random monkey kills him with a single punch*
i yi yi
*Ape
Seeing James on the monitor reminds me of the computer Holly from Red Dwarf.
Alright dudes, what's going down in groove town
Damn I love that show. Holly is great.
"Everybody's dead, Dave"
Are you abseloutely sure, sir? It does mean changing the bulb.
Male Holly or Female Holly?
The bobble head in front of Tony is the weird guy from Office Space but it looks just like the my pillow guy.
Even in quarantine instead of using Skype or Zoom he uses an old computer monitor to video chat. 😅😅
TheWildGacha 1390 I’m betting he used his modern pc. Then just got an HDMI to VGA adapter
Because James is Spiderman (a dumpster diver)
@@somedudefromapharmacy many people still rock old win XP machines. I still have a Conroe PC and an AGP gpu (Radeon 1900 hd)
@@somedudefromapharmacy It honestly doesn't require engineering knowledge. It's just a MtM cable with an HDMI hookup on one side and a VGA hookup on the other.
"Monkey"
- Bowser
Boss?! What'd they do to you?!
“And now I’m gonna make a monkey out of you, plumber.”

@EbberDeeMills ^
All of this makes me sad. A group of friends that meets up regularly, cant. Shit I have like 2 friends and barely see them. Yet they still make light and have fun. Kudos to you guys. Thank you for making me smile during this shit.
And as for why the protagonist gets more evil, it's because he's using his lower brain, also known as his primate instincts
and telepathy to monkeeeeyss...! the government doesn't want you to knooow!
Oh, is that why he has fucking fangs?
That's clever, I hadn't thought of it that way
You should do a Quarantino Week where you review Quentin Tarantino movies for one week.
The crt monitor 👍
📺👍
For some reason I remember this being a Steven King movie, based on one of his books. Thanks for showing us this, James.
20:10 Stephen Root also one of the best characters in News Radio. RIP Phil Heartman
6:41 - "Why don't they ever bring back or remake good shows, like 'BJ and the Bear.' Now there's a concept I can't get enough of - a man and his monkey."
I love mall rats
fun fact malcom in the middle did an episode that was a parody of this movie where craig feldspar was in a wheel chair and hired a monkey to take care of him and it tried to kill him.
That is the only episode of that show I have seen lol , just randomly.
@@adgato75 I highly recommend the series. Its great
I was a kid in the 90s and really wanted a pet monkey. So my dad rented this movie and at the end asked me, "so do you want a monkey now?" Classic horror as far as I am concerned.
The best part was when he killed the monkey with his bare teeth
Agreed
Grosvner Mcaffrey It wouldn’t have been as affective if they hadn’t switched between those different shots so we could see the grisly deed from different angles.
Update: Monkey Shines is still on Amazon prime. $3.99 to rent, $14.99 to buy
I know it's so stupid, don't they realize they could charge $19.99 for a crappy low budget movie? I'm guessing they're not good at economics or math. 🤔
Murderous George!! "Monkey see , Monkey kills." (My title of the movie)
this was one of the movie covers that always spooked me as a kid :P
Me too, but I was never brave enough to rent it.
I remember seeing the box art for this movie, and Child's Play 2 as a kid at video stores, they definitely stuck out. The cover of this one is a bit misleading though lol.
@@benharrison5816 me too, this and the child's play ones really got me!
Tony is a pair of spectacles away from being Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon from Jumanji.
This is the most creative version of the quarantine-collaboration that I've seen. Kudos. Love it.
The humans in the movie are apes. Monkey Shines still counts.
This movie scared the crap out of me as a kid. Technically I wasn't supposed to rent it but my grandmother didn't know that.
Scariest cover of a VHS ever.
Reminds me of the Malcom in the middle episode, where Craig is temporarily crippled and gets a helped monkey who tries to kill him...didn’t realise Malcolm in the middle played such strong homage to such a little known film hahaha
This movie scared the hell out of me as a kid, and I wasn't easily scared. I cheered for Jason and Freddy, but this is some heavy psychological horror and felt like it could really happen.
You cheered for Freddy, the child murdering pedophile?
Monkey shines is an awesome movie
I loved this movie. Tom Savini did the effects.
Savini is the Master of Horror Effects
Hey guys I know this is too early but next month should Monster MAYhem.
Alex Lujan yes!! And if he goes over tall man from phantasm, or toxie, swamp thing, or chud and the list goes on my friend
I don't care how great Steven Root's career gets. To me, he'll always be the crazy boss Jimmy James from NewsRadio.
wasn't there a dream sequence where the monkey comes out of his body during surgery?
the final jumpscare
indeed, it's sick!
This movie has symbolic undertones regarding primal desire and addiction. I.e. having a monkey on yr back. He finally emancipates himself by killing the monkey.
This poster was in every video rental store in the early 90's
Watched a non-zombie George Romero film called “Knightriders,” starring a young Ed Harris. No murdering monkeys, sadly.
Thanks for keeping up through this pandemic, your guys content helps get me through. Love James' on the ancient monitor!!!
Can we get a Train to Busan review? Amazing zombie movie.
Thank you for still putting good content out with the extra challenges you must face doing so. It helps us keep going through this difficult time. I must acknowledge the extra work with editing as you're in different rooms etc
Wait, is the Shine in "Monkey Shine" a reference to "The Shining" because of psychic powers?
to me the movie was more Misery than Shining.
Yes, that's exactly what it's meant to convey, it's the whole crux of the movie
Monkeyshines was a common phrase in the past
That's what I thought too. The guy had The Shines.
@@Josep_Hernandez_Lujan loved that films as a kid. Harvey Keitel was great😂
Donkey Kong gives this review a 10/10
Monkey Shines underrated film!
I live in Chicago, and if I ever see Jason Beghe at a networking event I now know the perfect conversation starter.
It is amazing that you can hear James echo 'all the way from where Tony is'. Lol
Its one of my favorite movies I discovered on accident when Blockbuster was still a thing.
That actor, when he was going off on the monkey, he had some *very* impressive teeth.☺
The Monkey Shines tape literally riding on the back of King Kong. Good attention to detail, James.
The spoof episode they did for this on Malcolm in the Middle was great.
So cool that Cinemassacre is able to adapt & work around this pandemic & still give us a show! Thank you!🥰
24:24 it happens a few times but Tony's Safari hat reflects perfectly on James head in the TV
I love you guys, your punny sense of humour, your insight, the chemistry and most of all sharing your love for movies. You've made me watch many movies that I haven't heard about before or was just skeptical of watching. You are great at what you're doing
As a kid i remember seeing that box almost every time my parents & I would go to one of the few video stores in my home town
Yo the scene where he is cursing out the monkey used to have me dying
I watched this film about 5 years ago thanks to James' Monster Madness review. I'm blown away to find out now it's based on a book - Move over Cujo and Slugs, I have a new batshit insane conversation starter in animal attack novels.
I remember watching this one late, late night wondering if I was dreaming this. watched it again and I.... STILL LOVE IT X-D
Is it bad that I think it's pretty cool that we're living through a deadly pandemic in our time?
Wow, april came quick
But did she come again? I'll be here all week!
Anyone else think this movie has a Stephen King feel to it? no just me?
I thought this was based on a King story
I've said it before and I'll say it again wasn't there an episode of Malcome in the Middle that parodied this movie with Craig and his Monkey.
fairly well edited given how you guys were working. thanks for keeping up with regular content (Kong-tent?) during the pandemic :)
Tony's primate family chart had me cracking up. He prepared for this.
Lol @ the guy that can taste random blood and know it's human blood.
Guy goes in for an interview:
"So, what skills do you have?"
"I have the ability to taste any blood I come across and tell what kind is it instantly."
"You're hired."
You actually made me want to watch this one.
I always remembered seeing the box on the shelves at the ideo store and I didnt want to see it but it was SO odd I always remembered it. I cant even imagine seeing this shit you all described as a kid. haha
It's gonna be Cinemassacres birthday in two days everyone
I remember seeing that box art at the video store when I was a child. Im very glad I didn't rent that!
Wait that figure was Milton from Office space I thought is was WWE's Paul Bearer or the My Pillow Guy, another George A Ramero not zombie related thats good(1973) The Crazies
Wait...but wasn't Paul Bearer also SvenGoolie? Still haven't forgiven him for betraying Undertaker for ManKind like some ~25 odd years ago...
I loved this movie back in the day, had it on VHS
This video was very well-cut for having to record it remotely like this. Nice work guys, thanks for keeping at it!
Thanks for carrying on with weekly videos during these times. Definitely helps morale.
lol monitors straight outta 1998
This movie is so underrated. Also review Phat Beach
"Ape"ril....COME ON, JAMES...it's Easter month so you gotta review movies with killer bunnies with sharp pointy teeth. !!n* :|
Y'all're dope. Stay healthy, clean them controllers 'n' remotes, and stay away from monkeys!!! Have you seen "Outbreak?" Or "Friends???"
Or 12 Monkeys....omg too soon? Maybe they had initially planned on it, but because the Corona Virus thing that came up pre-production maybe it would be too relevant for most people to feel comfortable with.
"The monkey gives him a reason for living for some reason, haha!" Wow. Never had a connection with another living being or what? That's a super strange reaction. I understand their love for each other perfectly, but then I always connected to pets stronger than any humans in my life.
been seeing alot of "Maggie" from "Northern Exposure" lately in these reviews. She was in CliffHanger" as well :D
I love Land of the Dead, Tony, watch your simian tongue (?)
I loved this movie for years. Used to freak me out man!
Love this film.
your guy's set design is comforting AF
holy shit, "pog: the game" my childhood, it lives
I was so high when i watched this i deadass figured the plotholes on my own like i just thought thats how the movie worked
I am so used to crude, screaming James that I was expecting him to snap at any second.
mighty joe young would be interesting
OMG. another one of those movies i saw when i was a kid and thought i made it up when i thought about it as an adult. awesome.
the highest kino movie of all time next week reviewed by one of my favorite channels!
Holy crap I forgot about Monkey Shines. I know what I'm watching tonight! Thanks guys!
I've notice "Fast Car & Beautiful Women" back there, when you gonna review it?
A month on the old car movies like "Vanishing Point" and "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" would actually be a great theme.
Oh god, I'm praying you'll review Link!!!
As silly as the premise is, I've always found this film severely depressing, especially the ending where he kills the monkey.
I loved monkey shines as a kid! Me and my buddy rented it during one of our monster movie marathons.
You guys should do a rental review of one of my favorite movies of all time: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.
Aw I can’t wait for Dunston checks in it’s stars Jason Alexander and Eric Lloyd Rupert Everett as Lord Rutledge and Paul Reubens peewee himself he’s in that movie he’s in it
Thank you for always being there James ❤️
I was not a huge fan of the new crew, but these new videos have really turned me around. You all know your stuff and are clearly talented in what you do.
Tony looks like someone making a fan parody of AVGN
