It's a Blob VS. Blob showdown at "Cinemassacre Video 2" today. The Blob (1958) was a drive-in favorite, this sci-fi classic follows teenagers Steve (Steven McQueen) and his best girl, Jane (Aneta Corseaut), as they try to protect their hometown from a gelatinous alien life form that engulfs everything it touches. 30 years later, in 1988, a remake was created. In that film, in a tiny California town, high school students discover a strange, gelatinous substance that melts the flesh of any living creatures in its path. So basically the same thing, just expanded. Get it? Expanded? Like THE BLOB???!

I love when James talks about classic horror films, he's always so much more animated when he's talking about something he's passionate about
It’s kinda funny too, because I and many others were introduced to him through the persona of the Nerd, so while we associate his face with a rage-filled gamer in his game room, being cartoonishly angry at games and swearing profusely. Turns out in real life he’s just a really cool dude.
I wonder how he is when talking about animated classics, does he appear static?

I'm with James, why do so many Hollywood films seem to hate cats, to the point that they act like no one has them as beloved pets? Alien is like the only horror movie I can think of where not only does the cat survive, Ripely actually went out of her way to save him like the dad went back in the house of Amityville Horror to save the dog.
When's Rob Zombie finally going to come on and talk Golden age horror shit with James?
I think Zombie is history. He's not doing anything anymore.
@@shitmandood He's still doing stuff, but he's doing it kind of like Kevin Smith, just straight up independent releases, direct to digital with maybe a limited theatrical release. He just came out with a sequel to the Devil's Rejects, 3 from Hell.

Co-written by Frank Darabont
And has awesome practical effects.
Jeff DeMunn played the Sheriff, and I think he has starred in everything that Darabont has done.

80s blob is a perfect remake, just like the thing and the Fly. The 80s solved the horror film.
Agreed. Exactly what I thought. The 80's is where horror and practical effects really started to gain traction.
The original Fly is an entirely different beast, more of a difference between them and the blobs. I personally prefer the original.
80s was such an amazing decade for film
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers had a good remake.
It had 2 good remakes and a bad one.
thepermman Yup. Let’s not forget the 90’s one.... and what was the other one?
Oh I meant the one with Donald Sutherland! The 90s one on a military base was alright. And the 00s one with Nicole Kidman was alright too.. not super, but had nice scenes.

I love both versions of The Blob for different reasons. I like the 50's version for its cheesy appeal, groovy theme song, and Steve McQueen's performance.
I love the 88 version for its awesome gory and creature effects, its subversion of expectations, and Shawne Smith's performance.

@@JLKnoxville sorry. Autocorrect messed it up.
They really did a good job on remakes back in the 70s and 80s. The blob, the thing, little shop of horrors and that amazing invasion of the body snatchers all did a great job. These days a lot of the remakes don’t do it for me
@OtherWorlds AllWorlds I absolutely disagree with that assessment.
The Crazies in the 2010 was awesome.
@OtherWorlds AllWorlds preeeety sure he meant modern hollywood remakes... conan, robocop, ghostbusters 2016, ninja turtles, hellboy, child's play, total recall.....star wars. live action lion king. modern remakes and reboots suffer greatly. hollywood suffers greatly.
could the monster known as hollywood remake a passing version / reboot the blob today?
@Otherworlds AllWorlds To quote Joe Bob Briggs, "there are a lot more filmmakers out there today thanks to the internet, but that's just led to a lot more crap being made."

I have to admit I was floored by the '88 version having a kid graphically eaten alive...
I know, right?
The blob 1958 vs the blob 1988 vs justin silverman 2019
I will always have a soft spot for the original 1958 Blob. As a kid in the 1970's, I would see The Blob on television and get so scared that I would turn off the TV. Took a few broadcasts for me to see the whole film. The fact that the Blob could slide under doors and through air vents was plenty scary.
The Blob ‘88 was filmed in my hometown of Abbeville, Louisiana. Funny enough is the actors went eat at my grandparents restaurant and they have some great stories about it. I can confirm that we do not have Blobfest here. I would definitely love to go.
I noticed you have All Dogs Go to Heaven and Rock-a-Doodle. I hope those are discussed in a future episode.
Cats cant dance
Rock a Doodle could be fun, though I feel like they'd need to cover a few, since a lot of Don Bluth stuff is not great, unfortunately
Oh my god, a Rob Zombie Blob would be TERRIBLE!
the guy with the beard is the worst. doesn't contrast others well. interjects like a child would.
Don't think I don't see that Heavyweights VHS down there. You gotta review it sometime.
I remember when I was 7 years old visiting relatives in Malaysia in 1990 (I live in the UK) waiting for a train in the seating area of a train station. I kid you not, they had the blob (1988) showing on the telly. This was in the middle of the day! I remember thinking: what the hell am I watching here! 😁
I mean the 50s movie was a classic, but you just can't beat the practical effects from the 80s one
I've always been preferential to the classics but i can appreciate good remakes.
Alright, if we're gonna talk about classic 50s Sci-fi Horror, Attack of the 50 foot woman has the best poster of them all.....the movie itself is absolute garbage....the 90s remake slightly better garbage....then came Attack of the 60 foot Centerfold. Someone needs to remake Attack of the 50 foot woman as like legit sci-fi horror.
James likes the 50s Thing more than Carpenter. Lmao
He prefers good acting, writing and direction to overblown special effects. roflmao.
@@KRhetor The Carpenter film also has good writing, acting, and direction.
Imagine that. Someone has an opinion that's not the same as yours. Lmao.
Both films are classics and each have made an immense amount of impact on the science fiction and horror genres. If nothing else, you must at least admit the historical value of the 1951 Thing. It did so much to jumpstart the sci-fi genre in film.
I miss the old set, it looked a lot better :(
Is his old set still in place and just not being used anymore? Anyone know? Or was it torn down for this new set?
Ok so Mike Matei, Tony needs to play Katamari Damaci!
awesome game
I met a woman who was a teacher in my middle school who said she was there when they came up with the idea for the blob. For shooting certain lighting effects the crew would shine a spotlight through gelatin. She was on a movie set one day and some of the gel spilled onto the ground and it moved across the floor in such a way that it slid over and moved around objects like papers and books and rejoined with itself on the other side. Effects artists and producers saw this and thought it would be cool if there was a formless monster that could move like that.
I live in Louisiana, and I'ma start a Blobfest next year now...
Filmed in my hometown of Abbeville, LA.. Got to see them film the theater scene from a distance.. I was 5 🤣
Did you just call me... Blob?
How can you forget about the movie "The Stuff" that movie was also great.
The stuff had a great premise but made to much mistakes. Its tonally a mess...
The ending of the 80s blob is something that stuck in my mind for years. I'd honestly love to see a straight sequel with the jar with th blob getting broken open. Or let loose.
I hate to say this and not sound cliche. It has to be done with practical effects with little or subtle CGI.
@@sydneystroud4397 It can be CGI too, both Practical and CGI Effects are fantastic! CGI is hard to make along with Practical, it takes a very long time and is hard work to make both. CGI is just another tool to help make films just like Practical Effects. It's time to stop the "hate" for CGI, if people really love film as much as they say they do, then they should love and appreciate CGI just as much as Practical.
Gotta say, this was the best stage setup for a rental episode yet. It makes TOTAL sense to be behind the counter!
I have not seen the original, I love the 80's one.
The 50s version is charming, but the 80s version is the definitive Blob, imo.
The Blob (1988) is WAY better than the 50s Blob
I'd be curious to know if there's a story behind Kieran's facial scar

I love both versions but my favorite is the 1988 one
Heavyweights! Please do a review of Heavyweights! C'mon it's right in that freakin' showcase!
The 50s one is decent but I think the 80s one is far better. The 80s remake is legit scary, the 50s one just come off as kind of silly.
Strange! how you review "The Blob" on the same day weird meteorite like objects crash on the ground in Chile!!
jeez, Chile, hit by enough meteorites?
One review I'd be interested to see, and in the same vein of this one, would be a full comparison between the original Invaders From Mars and the '86 version since you mentioned it in passing. Great stuff as always, guys.
Great synopsis gentlemen!
If it's not too late, how about a review of "Night of the Creeps" or "Street Trash"
When I was four or five years old I found the 1988 version my father freshly recorded off the satellite. The movie was so damn intense I had to take breaks watching it. Afterwards I never wanted to go near Phone Booths or Garbage Disposals.
The 1988 remake is one of my favorite remake movies
I thought the remake was better because it had more character development for the leads, it had a tongue-in-cheek attitude about itself, it was entertaining, and the special effects are fantastic.
I gotta go with the 1958 original, maybe it's because I grew up in Chester County and thought it was the coolest thing ever that such a legendary movie was shot so close by
The guy on the left talks way too much
Steve McQueen was one of Bruce Lee's students. "That Steven McQueen - he's got the piss and vinegar..." - Lee.
I have yet to watch either one.
So did James just not want to film in his basement anymore?
Monster Madness is the best holiday tradition.
so sad. a remake of the blob every 30 years would have been cool
Stranger Things season 3 was clearly inspired by The Blob, with it's blob-like central villain. There's even a scene where the creature is in its blob form and squeezes through some vents.
"... squatting in Dr. Oaks' home."
Home would be in very loose quotation.
You guys need a shielded cable somewhere in your setup. You can hear interference every once in a while.
I love the original Blob. The 80's version was fun but it's not a classic like the Steve McQueen version.
There's a mean streak in the remake that really turns me off. Still better than Son of Blob.
Wait, what did I miss, Jurassic Park 3 is now better than Lost World? Sorry, no. A talking raptor is not "better" than a Speilberg film that was also adapted from the Crichton novel.
Great choices on movies. Your helping make the halloween season even more magical
Hey! I still have that Family Values 98 Tour VHS! Limp Bizkit, Orgy, Rammstein, Ice Cube and KoRn. Ahhh those angsty teenage years.
I love that there is a 1989 Batman “Bob” action figure hanging on the wall
I saw the 1980s “The Blob” when I was a kid and it scared the ever living shit out of me!
I personally prefer the 80s version. I just remember I was like 10 or 11, went into the local video rental store, recognizing the title and rented The Blob (I didn't see the original until about a year later). At the time it was the bloodiest movie I had ever seen. Still love it, also Kevin Dillon is fantastic. Love, Love, Love the remake!!
Kind of sad that The Blob remake isn’t as talked about as much as the other 80s horror remakes. I feel like the practical effects are on par with both The Fly and The Thing remakes, the new backstory for the monster is actually interesting and sort of creepy, and it has the balls to not only kill off a kid, but show it front and center to give you the stakes of the film.
how could they miss making a 2018 version of the Blob, it would have fit so well with the 30year time span
@ravelnavarro4358 watch better movies
My mom says she was creeped out by the 1958 version of the blob
@Deathcoldan well my mom was born in the 50s so i mean I've heard about this for years. She said she seen it in the drive in when she was young
I’m trying to focus on the video but keep laughing my ass off at the “Mac and Me” poster 😂😂😂😂
