      @Nicky, again, tricky but not impossible, even with modern tech...just not that useful, since when are you going to get into melee with a tank outside of the Grim Darkness of the 41st millennium?
      If the batteries/fuel tank & internal combustion engine (the heaviest bits of a chainsaw) were moved to an external backpack or belt mount, you could probably fit a much lighter electric motor into the handle, with the main weight source then being gearing it to the desired power. If a single constant ratio is desired, a planetary gearbox is pretty light and reliable, but if you want to be able to throttle the speed vs power at will (with a thumb-operated slider switch?) there are some pretty light CVTs...they just have a lot of reliability issues and probably wear out too quickly for sustained combat use. Martial arts for such a weapon would need to emphasize protecting the cord, however, so it would be a band-aid solution until lighter batteries can be made.
      The angular momentum issues several commenters have mentioned could be mitigated by having a second chain in counter-rotation (if you don’t want to deal with the problems associated with cutting in either specific direction) or an internal gyroscope-like counterweight in the hilt (if you want the advantages of the single direction cutting, especially if reversible). Or have martial arts with movements that mimic the natural procession of the chainsword’s gyroscopic forces to deliver harder-to-block (but also easier to predict) blows.

      Well they theoretically can push or pull if it has a mechanism to pick the direction. Chainswords aren't the most common weapons in the Imperium, even the cheap gas (prometheum) powered ones so it would be an expensive to buy and fairly rare weapon. There's a reason why the Chainsword is the Melee staple that accompanies the Bolter in the hands of Space Marines and Battle Sisters as basic weapons and anything akin to those orgs use as standard would be vanishingly rare.

    Hi Shad! Kerry from Man at Arms here. As one of the few people on earth with a functional chainsword (sitting right here in the room with me), I can tell you that one of the main problems with the sword as it is most often shown is the blade guard. The blade must have curf (width of cut) beyond the guard or it cant cut any deeper then the blade is exposed. This is a major issue! Power armour or great strength can as you stated fix issues of how cumbersome it might be but the physical issue of that guard cant be over come without major changes to the way these swords are normally shown. In our video you will notice that the guard is removed when we are cutting hard objects.

    In the Caiphas Cain novels it actually goes through the main character running through practice drills for blocks, strikes, parries and riposts, and then using them in combat. The main character is not a Space Marine, but he is described as extremely athletic and fit.
    There is a scene where he is shown fighting an Ork Warboss, who is immensely stronger than him, has much greater reach, and is wearing power armor to boot, and armed with an even bigger chain weapon, where our hero is wearing a uniform. The first part of the fight has him dodging and parrying and thinking "Oh shit I'm going to die!" Then, after he's gotten a measure of his oponent he feigns running out of stamina. The warboss, being an orc, moves in for the kill, pressing their intersecting swords closer & closer, & leaning in to the hero, who he towers over. Whereupon, the protagonist shoves the pistol in his off hand through the Ork's vision slit, and into it's eye, and discharges it on full auto. I think it's a very good depiction of what that kind of combat would actually be like.

      This, much this. The Chainsword is specifically an anti-personnel weapon, used for killing fleshy, lightly armored things like Tyranid gaunts, Ork boyz, traitorous guardsmen, Eldar aspect warriors, etc etc. And on top of that, the roaring and screaming of the chainblade alone sends a message to the enemy in a universe where emotions can affect the world (Warp stuff and all that)
      Why not use more power weapons? Well, power weapons are **very** hard to craft, IIRC they're also a lost technology. And actually, factions like the Eldar that still have the tech *do* use power swords en-masse; only the Striking Scorpion aspect warriors use chainswords.
      Why not use bladed weapons with the same technologies and materials used in the chainsword? Well, by and large the things that you'll be hitting with it are highly resistant to simple cuts, I.E. Orks. Chainbladed weapons will apply *more* force outside of the wielder's swing: Even if the initial strike dosen't penetrate, the blades will start ripping at the armor, then the flesh underneath. This is especially important for the Adeptus Astartes, who suffer from impaired flexibility and maneuverability due to their hulking physique and power armor.
      So, if you can't arm your entire arm with power weapons and simple bladed swords are insufficient, you make chainswords.

As the Orks were getting close a Guardsmen commander/Sergeant leaned over the defences on the lil hill and yelled ''BANG BANG, YOU'RE DEAD'' while pointing his empty gun at an Ork and the Ork's head exploded. I feel it's important to point out that with a lot of RUclips videos talking about martial applications of 40k technology (and I think you nail and understand that in the context of the universe these things actually do make more sense), they somewhat miss that a lot of the technology (if not all) that's used in the year 40k is actually developed in around 25k (which was pretty much the height of human technology achievements, it was god like technology and then all lost after the fall) and just rediscovered later in the year 30-40k. A lot of this technology wasn't originally actually meant to be used the way that it's used, Terminator armour for example was simply just a very rugged space suit in 25k but when rediscovered in 30k, because of the nature of the Imperium (and to be fair the nature of the galaxy that the Imperium has to survive in) it was repurposed into powered battle armour that's now worshiped, cherished and looked after the way we'd look after the Sistine Chapel). So when it comes to Chainswords it might look a little unwieldy but that's probably because it was originally used to be attached to a 20-25k robots arm to be used as a simple cutting tool, the Imperium just see it and think "ooooh think of what we could use that for!"

    Something I love about warhammer is that they have in lore addressed how, when being used by normal people, it is best to just use it as a very ornate club. I think because space marines are so strong it has the same idea, in that you just need to thwack someone with it to kill them, but the chainsaw part is just so that if an enemy doesn't die they are not going to be getting back up or attacking you after a hit.

  • @Funsox
    @Funsox 5 лет назад +308

    My father actually really badly injured himself with a chainsaw to the point that he has permanent nerve injury. He was actually in a few competitions in Australia for tree felling until then. A concept that he described to me leaps out at me here;
    By the time the pain had registered and that burning sensation had run up his arm, and then the amount of time it took to realize what was happening and release the trigger mechanism, he had already cut 2 inches deep into his own arm and the entire muscle of his forearm was basically just a piece of meat hanging off his arm. It also "gripped" onto the skin and flesh and became entangled with his skin and had to be torn off even after the blade had stopped moving. This is in the period of what was described to me as; "Less than a second's time". As soon as the blade touches skin, is just grips in and starts sawing, biting deeper and deeper. It doesn't just cut if you apply pressure, especially on flesh. It WANTS to dig deeper into flesh. It will grip, bite and tear and pull itself deeper into the cut. For this story in particular, he was 20m up a tree and another climber had to scale the tree with spikes and he had to stand on the guy's shoulders as they climbed back down with a lanyard because the wound was so severe that if he released pressure, it would spray blood. This is less than a second of blade contact with no downward pressure, in fact, the pressure was upward and was barely a graze. His arm was just pulled toward the cut as soon as contact was made because of the nature of skin.
    Another anecdotal story I heard involves clothing. Because clothing is so loose, when the blade catches clothing, it doesn't cut through for lack of resistance. Instead, it just grabs the clothing and pulls it. Whoever is wearing that clothing gets pulled in the same way. I briefly met a man who lost an arm because he was wearing a jumper (sweater) that was too loose and it got caught in the blade when he reached over to remove a small stick that had become jammed in the stabilizing spike. Because of the way his arm was being pulled, it wasn't possible to release the mechanism until it had broken his wrist and sawed half way through the bone of his arm, requiring amputation.
    These tools are specifically designed to tear through Australian Hardwood, some of the hardest wood on the planet. Things that don't have a pulpy structure or are specifically fibrous are damaged exponentially by these types of tools because of their tendency to "grip" materials that are soft or loose and fibrous. Even in your first real-world example, if you touched them for even a moment it wouldn't just go "ZZZT", it would immediately bite in to any clothing or flesh and they couldn't pull away without tearing the flesh and skin that's been caught in the blades off their own body in the process. In the standard reaction time of a human being, about .5 of a second, the cut could easily be an inch deep or more. A fairly average chainsaw blade travels at about 2500 surface feet per second, around 60 miles per hour or 100 kilometers per hour. Depending on the location, it would be an immediate mortal blow because your opponent would tear the wound open trying to get away from the saw and just immediately bleed out if they didn't hold the wound closed, leaving themselves totally vulnerable.
    It's nasty, nasty shit. I nearly got PTSD just from looking at the horror in their faces as they recounted their tales alone. This stuff is extremely dangerous and extremely damaging without even considering magic metals that defy the crystalline structure of metals being physically incapable of forming the cementite/pearlite structure needed for it's integrity by lacking sufficient molecules and physics itself because the Fairy King said "Magic". I have a qualification in metallurgy and magic metal annoys me nearly as much as studded leather armour annoys you because I understand how metal works and what makes strong and hard metals strong or hard.

      I think shad missed one important point here that you touched on. Chainswords would be brutal to morale. If you just saw your buddy ripped to shreds with a chainsaw you mite just run fkr your life training and commisar be damned.
      Even the issue with the swords. A battery powered chainsaw is scary light all things considered. You have to dodge it though unless you have a piece of something thick chunkey tough and hard to put between you and it. Ive used bandsaws to cut through 1 inch steel plate ... a chain saw will cut through armor eventually if u had diamond teeth .... anything behind that armor better fight like hell to get that blade off because its dead ktherwise

    • @mattrickard3716
      @mattrickard3716 5 лет назад +23

      God level response.
      My only contribution was going to be that just as a sword gets stuck because of it's inability to push the material being cut out of the way, so too can a chainsaw get stuck (and they frequently do) if the bar gets pinched by the two halves of whatever you happen to be cutting as it starts losing structural integrity, because you have cut half way through it for instance.
      The design of the chainsword seems to overcome this to some degree due to the limited depth of penetration which precludes the bar of the sword from coming in contact with the object being cut. Between the size of the teeth on the chainsword (much greater depth of cut than real chainsaw teeth) and the evidence gleaned from your testimony, perhaps it would be a more effective weapon than first appearances or even the Man at Arms model would suggest, even without magic metal?

    Lop your hand off at the wrist, ideally because it went bad
    Attach chainsaw
    GROOVY
    note most effective against demon possessed zombies... aka deadites

      Downsides: To heavy for normies, sprays you with enemies guts AND armor, pulls you and the enemy closer together/throws the enemy away from you.
      The only real downside is the weight issue, but that just makes it a weapon exclusive to elite troops. Oh, and the whole armor particles ripping your legs apart if you don't wear armor thing.

    chainswords slide off armour plates in the novels, generally they aim for the flexible softer joints, the motion for attacking an opponent will most likely be a slash like a katana rather than a chopping motion like some swords which would rely on the momentum of the strike to aid the chainsword teeth to catch and dig into the material

      Which is realistic. You need to get purchase on something to saw it and since chainswords have mediocre armor penetration the teeth are obviously only scratching Ceramite at best. Therefore the most efficient places to slash are soft areas and joints. Even plated joints are better since the armor plates will deflect into the joint so you can still grind down more efficiently.

    Another thing about chainswords is also that you hear them revving in the media. So the wielder may have some control over the chain actually running. They could disengage the blade while parrying and such. They may even be able to simply engage a gear to reverse the spin of the blade.

    So we are questioning the perfection of the glorious chainsword, gifted to you mere mortals by the Omnissiah without any reverence to the machine spirit? TECHNO-HERESY!!!

    • @Oops-All-Ghosts
      @Oops-All-Ghosts 5 лет назад +10

      The chainsword is not perfect. How could it be? It is a physical object. The Omnissiah's light illuminates all things, and by it we see the many glories of the universe, but only by their shadows do we see them--crude, imperfect things, which we strive to replicate by devising new tools to watch the shadows, and perhaps to catch a glimpse of the shapes that cast them. How could the chainsword be perfect, when the hands that craft it are human?
      Never forget: the truth of the quest for knowledge is that it _is_ a quest. Learn to see the quest in everything--in every step you take, in every grain of sand in the air, in every flickering shadow on the wall. _That_ is how you will come to recognize the Omnissiah. In the myriad souls of the world, all bound together, as cogs in a grand, impossible machine.
      (Don't mind me; go about your business, citizen.)
