I think that's the most reasonable take of them all, idolising individuals isn't something I think is healthy either. Better to recognise the actions and events that are positive rather than just individuals (multiple reasons, some she already covered).

Big agree. It bugs me so much when someone says tearing down statues is 'erasing history' when thats literally the point of having statues in the first place, to erase the community and the people and glorify an individual
Honestly I find it crushing that many of you feel this way about individual figures. How is any of what you percieve about the nations statues unhealthy obsession. I'm finding it really difficult to reconsile all these comments. Just feels like in the decades to come, the statues will go, and it won't be enough and that symbols of stablity and home will be taken or changed and I'll be lost, without history or identity, and still I feel I'm unable to express how I feel.

Because they are a product of thier time, they didn't understand the concept of equality or humanity. But you have to recognize they advanced our society tremendously. And ofc you should idiolise people as you can learn from them and sculpt your personality of them.
@@tobyarnold4349 Pretty much every advancement comes at the expense of another, we don't use nuclear bombs because of what happened in japan, World war 2 literally drove so much technological advancement as you can see by how quickly everything changed between the 50's and 90's. It's just a sad reality that bad things usually lead to advancement and change. if those bad things never happened then we wouldn't know they're wrong

Robert Clive was certainly responsible for the 1770 Bengal famine, but Churchill was not responsible for the 1943 Bengal famine. There was certainly more that could have been done to help, but it was ultimately poor intel, greedy landowners and the Japanese occupation of Burma that caused the famine.

Statues are about marking the past, they’re history. Whether the statue is of a person who was good or bad the statue still has meaning for different reasons and reminds us of aspects of the past.
everyone really spoke well and its so interesting to take in different perspectives. but the man at the end really tugged on my heart strings! we can dwell on the past to an extent but like he said, the statues are symbolic and perhaps aren't always there to glorify. though, I think so many more beautiful murals and art should be displayed around areas of importance. so much to debate. and how great I'd love to know what people think of my city having a life-size bronze pig statue in its centre, to celebrate having markets for hundreds of years ahaha ☺🙏

Yes and no. It's right that morals were different at the time, but not everyone was, for instance, a slave trader - there were many wanting to abolish the slave trade who could equally have been memorialised. Thing is, it's the people with the money that put up the statues, and they're usually the ones with questionable morals... Also we can decide now that we've moved on from those ethics, why do statues need to be permanent? Couldn't public spaces be more like galleries where art/monuments are regularly updated?
Secondary question would be: whose moral's do we use to judge? Slave traders thought of slavery as normal but I don't think slaves viewed slavery with the same moral values. (I know you were just being rhetorical but lots of people ask the same question you did -and mean it)
Of course. The problem is there is an absence of morality, replaced by Machiavellian strategy, in contemporary judgement. Not only that, but they are fringe and minority opinions, wielded by institutions in a global power struggle. The lie is that there is morality underpinning it. There isn't.

Very inspiring. I have actively commented on people’s post that lay flowers at the feet of colonial figures’ statues to inform and explain the bad things they did and I always get slandered, sweared at and accused of being an extreme leftist which I would not say is the case. It is really important to inform and question why these statues still stand.
Just as a tip: Get yourself a certified FFP2/FFP3 mask (best from '3M', they are the most dense - no ad), which also protects yourself from COVID if it fits properly (no air flows past the side/top), because they filter the inhaled air and therefore also provide self-protection. Normal masks "only" protect the people in the environment and not yourself. 😕 Just in case you didn't know that yet 🙂
Of course asking a bunch of people who know nothing about history would result in them saying things like “oh I don’t care about statues”. Those statues are this countries history, whether you like it or not. They are part of the reason why all the third world people wanna leave their own countries and come here so badly. Plus if you’re going to use the slavery line, literally every other group of people in human history practiced slavery, however it was white people specifically British who stopped it first. We even did a worldwide blockade of slave ships in the late 18th century and throughout the 19th century in an attempt to stop it. Plus slavery had been outlawed in all British empire colonies by 1833, however slavery in Africa continues to this very day.

I often see people today with a sense of moral superiority over their ancestors, however the tragic fact is that we dont live in a world of black and white, there is a grey area with regard to blame and ethics. Theres no use in justifying a wrong decision, however it is important to see how and why it arose, and to think that your decision making is more justifiable than another persons without insight to the context of their decision making, or persons life is frankly naive. There is much more to perspective than is often given credit, and the same ethos that can cradle a persons whole thought process may be there hypocrisy. Im not British, but to see a people ready to tear down their history saddens me.

It's not that black and white. Without Winston Churchill for example england would be speaking German right now, he was the endurance England needed. Without Robert Clive England would have suffered severe looses during the Carnatic Wars and lost influence to France, which would have unforseeable consequences in the European powerstruggle. People argue it was not "just" Winston Churchill fighting the war, but then blame him for an entire famine the hypocrisy is astounding. This issue is far more complex than it's made out to be.

That little girl has a solid head on her tiny little shoulders. She gave such a mature, smart answer haha I wish more kids were on her level with not wanting to be famous. Here in the USA, almost every kid wants to be a RUclips star, or just famous for any reason whatsoever… it’s sad man, and it gives a depressing outlook on the future. Egypt has sarcophagus’ and they were all slave owners yet everyone seems to be okay with them in museums. Can’t pick which parts of history to use to justify bad actions today. Every race has been enslaved at some point in time..
