My favorite part of these types of videos is how they bring out all the know-it-all, ultimate construction, tough guys saying how everything this guy did was wrong. The very guys that made me leave the trades. Nothing wrong at all with how this guy trimmed the door. If it looks good at the end, you did it right. Period.
Kudos to you for putting the header up first. I've had arguments with carpenters who insist on putting the legs on first. This causes a "trap" situation where both header miters have to fit the legs perfect or you end up short after making your adjustments. With the header on first you can adjust the miter on the leg if you need to and most of the time a small space at the floor is going to be of no consequence, or possibly being cut even shorter by the flooring installer.
Wow a video that was straight to the point and actually good information also. He didn’t even tell us to subscribe and like all of his videos for 5 minutes. 👍🏻 appreciate people like this.
You have saved me a ton of future mistakes by teaching me how to use a test piece to check my miter before cutting the side trim! It’s such a simple hack that I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of it myself. Great instructional video that is easy to understand and follow with great details and tips regarding how to find the short points of the top trim, to dip the blade and move the board until you get to your mark before making a full cut, to keep your nails and inch away from the outside corners to prevent splitting, and to wipe away the glue before it dries. A+
I own my home and it was build in 1952 and back them no tools no ideas of this work of art this video is gold to me i have to do all my doors and windows thank you papi
Nice video! Good job keeping it simple. Sometimes with a corner that is fighting me to get tight miters, I'll barely lift the front edge of the casing as I make the cut on the saw. This provides a very subtle back bevel to your cut, and is sometimes just enough to allow your joint to be tighter. For DIY first timers, make sample corners out of scrap pieces first before you go cutting your final pieces. Not every corner is a true 90 so making samples and recording the angles on the backs will allow you to make the correct cut the first time on your good pieces. Also, cut 1/16 or more away from your pencil line if this is your first time doing this. Bring the piece up to the door and check for accuracy, you'd be amazed at how short you may come up by simply trusting your line the first time. It happens, and at least if you're too long, you can go back to the saw and nibble away a bit more until it's correct. Moldings aren't cheap, so do it right the first time. And the obvious, if you're planning on painting this, buy pre-primed paint grade molding, not the unfinished stuff. You'll save a lot of money.
OMG . . . I love how he teaches. I've laid engineered flooring, ceramic tile and wainscoting and I was terrified of trim and moulding. Until NOW! He has given me a huge boost of confidence. Now I need to find his video on crown moulding and baseboard trim!
I was taught to nail the trim to the door casing all the way around and then a nail through the miters BEFORE nailing the entire trim to the wallboard......Just a different way to skin a cat. Great video!
I thought if I couldn't get it flush my first cut then I measured wrong.. its very frustrating to say the least and get down on myself.. I never knew it was not only "ok" but encouraged to make small cuts to get to the edge for a perfect fit and without a measuring tape
Hi, I'm just wondering if I can use just a hammer and nail to install the molding around the door? Because the nail gun is expensive for just a small project.
Yes you can. Just use the nail sizes and placement that he referenced in the video. And if you hand nail, pre-drill your nail holes in at least the molding and use a drill bit a couple of sizes smaller in diameter than the nail. And definitely pre-drill your holes before you nail across the miters. If you are a novice at hand nailing the pre-drilling will help start the nails and make it a little easier. Also used a nail set to countersink the nail heads. You only need to countersink the nail heads a little bit. Also..... you can usually get a compressor and and 2 to three nail guns and a small air hose as a set at a big box store for around $99.00.... They are handy to have around. You can even buy say a Dewalt battery powered finish nailer but they are usually $250 and up. Not very cost effective but it’s nice not having to drag around a compressor, hose, etc and it uses the same batteries as my drill. Ron
This guy makes it look simple because his door jamb is in perfect alignment with the drywall. If you do this professionally you will only find a perfect situation once in every 50 doors at best. Watch another 10 videos on how to trim a door and you might have enough real world examples in order to do a nice job of trimming your door(s).
Fantastic tutorial, I have learnt a couple of things here, I have only gotten into carpentry in the last couple of years, you have demystified some of the grey areas. Just one thing though. Isn't it about time Americans converted to metric.
I work with Metals, sometimes have to deal with things coming from all over the world and often times in metric. I can speak from experience, metric is so much easier to deal with. No 1/8 or 1/16. Helpers could pick things up easier. I can go on and on but I’ll leave it there.
Need help bought new washer and dryer but they are about 3 inches to long Thad to take my washroom doors of they won’t close how could I make the doors fit any suggestions
If this video was done by Mike Holmes, the first step would be to demolish the entire house and rebuild, because the door frame isn't perfectly square!
Everything it's good. I use liquid nail in back of the moulding and that way a put less nail so the job looks more clean well maybe helps this like a tip
3/16" reveal all the way around. First the header should be checked for level at the side jambs. Them just hold the casing with the spine against the header miter and mark thr long point.
I like this guy. Straight talking. Knows his business. Clear and concise. I also like the fact there is NO MUSIC. Good job FH!
Learner-Learns yes no dang music!! Lol
Agreed! It's like ppl seem to think music is needed so there's no 'awkward' silences lol
i agree
Love the no music as well
Came to say exactly this.
That tip about cutting with miter saw and moving the trip in a few tines was gold

This gentleman is a delight to watch and his narration is crystal clear...GREAT VIDEO SIR...

Idk why but I like this guy alot.
Did my first door trim today thank you! I was lost before I saw this.
8:43 Best Part!
Wow, that was some amazing hacks there. Doing it this way I will never need a tape measure.
This video was extremely helpful. It shows how to measure properly and how to start. Also how to get great miter joints.

Now I can tackle this after this straightforward, no nonsense video. 👏🏻
That looks grey and pretty easy I tried it works
Great
All I can say .Thank You.my knowledge just got better with the extra tips I got from You.
Great video, concise explanation, love the tips of not having to measure with a tape. Thanks for taking the time.
You’d be great for a television instructional show. Terrific voice and excellent video.
You gave really great directions, clear and concise. Thanks.

1 word for this gentleman. HOLY CRAP YOU'RE GOOD!

Awesome video, been looking at a lot of videos but this one is the best. Starting from the top is the best way
Great video! This encouraged me to take a solo flight into framing my apt doors the easy and correct way. Thanks Mr: Larson!
Fantastic work and decent length of video. Definitely subscribing to this one, thanks man!
Good tip about bringing the mitre saw in, rather than going for it first time, and about checking the mitre corner before cutting - cheers!
One of the best how to vids I've ever seen.
Is the top piece above the jamb by 1/4 inch or flush with it?
This guy is so Smooth .. lol. Love the video
This was fantastic. Thank you so much for the wisdom!

Amazing how some people criticize about how it was done wrong but they don't have a pic of themselves or a video on how to do it right.
Ik King, and the end product was perfect, wtf
Very nice show. Thanks for all the info
Looks easy enough. Thank you Travis. I'm going to give it a go and fix my sticky door.
Very very good. Congratulations FROM Brazil
Thank you so much ! I learned something today.
Thanks for sharing this knowledge. I am about to hang three interior doors. Really helpful.

gsf67 .... No
We've been here. See Metric Conversion Act of 1975. It didn't take.
No not happening.
Awesome video !! I think the trick is to take your time, and do your best work. :)
Great straight forward video! 5 stars
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Nice job
Made easy! Looks great, thanks.
Need help bought new washer and dryer but they are about 3 inches to long Thad to take my washroom doors of they won’t close how could I make the doors fit any suggestions
Do you need some space between floor and trim for carpet ??
No, the carpet gets tucked or cut to it. If you leave a space it might be seen, depending on the thickness of the floor you're installing.
If this video was done by Mike Holmes, the first step would be to demolish the entire house and rebuild, because the door frame isn't perfectly square!
You make it look so easy. Thanks!
Good work!!
Best video ever.
