You make everything look so easy and doable!
I would work for free with him just to learn theses priceless skills
That simple base trim is really good for DIYer success. No need to cope joints or anything like that. Just do your best and caulk the rest!
Exactly. Cheers!
Cope joints are easy and satisfying and hold up better
U rock. In the middle of this project right now.
Cheers!
Glueing AND caulking the baseboards!??? What about future paint jobs, Jeff??? That’s gonna be atrocious to try to get off to do a good job like we should.
Its nice to see you using those craftsman power tools, I have been very happy with mine. Mine are the slightly older models of those but still great just brushed haha.
oh no!! i like all your tips and i've learned some good ways to DIY. However around the 17 min mark you recommend gluing. BIG NO on gluing casing to the door. I'm doing a remodel right now where they glued the casing and it's a disaster to remove the hideous old casing. Removing has damaged the door jamb - so now all new doors are on order. DON'T GLUE. Please!
Absolutely, caulk only along margin joint, no glue.
That’s not a triangle it’s a square
mdf jamb/casing? PLEASE stop spreading the garbage construction methods. if you brought that in shame on you if it was provided to you I would pack up and get out of there.
Very informative, thanks for the useful tips
I know everyone has thier own way to do things, but 12 years doing production trim I've never seen someone install a door from the outside. Case the hinge side and start by setting the reveal around the slab first. Open the door and address the plumb. I don't understand how you even know what's going on with the reveal from the outside. You've got the door open setting the hinge side with screws first? That's pulling the slab away from the other side and twisting the jamb. I'll always use screws but it's literally the last thing I do.
Jeff, just want you to know that you are the "go to" guy for both myself and my son, when it comes to doing DIY reno jobs in our houses. Love your vids...and your casual, relaxed attitude because I think it puts people at ease when it comes to doing something they are not comfortable with. Keep up the good work!
You are fantastic in explaining exactly what and why you are doing what you are doing. You are a great teacher!
Wow, thank you!
I’m a full time real estate investor, who’s been doing all my own work since day one when I was still a working full time as a bartender, I had basically zero formal experience in construction, am in the process of getting my GC license. And almost exclusively type into you tube “home renovision diy how to…..” when I don’t know how to do something for this reason.
It’s “explaining the why” and the simplicity. Like using half of what your working on to measure the next step as your doing it to save time stuff
dude is FUN to watch, he's actually making the job fun.. "it'll scream at ya and remind you to sand" haha great
i just watched that thisiscarpentry guy on installing prehung doors he said not to put shims behind hinges whats your take on that?
Man I remember when you first started this channel. Your calmness helped me take on a lot of my home projects! I'm about to take on raising my front door up. Perfect timing. Painted for years and never knew the 5 in 1 tricks with caulking lol. Thanks
Happy to share. Cheers!
Some points of interest but I add some positive criticism.
Never freehand a trimming of a door and the speed square is free handing ... it did move at the tail end. Straight edge and a couple of clamps please.
Score or at the very least, tape the ceiling facing side of the door ... chip out for sure especially if natural wood.
Lose the laser level, not necessary. Bubble level, shims, door edge and nailer and that is it.
A door properly installed, with shims, should be operable without casing. Yes, the casing adds strength but as I said. A screw into the framing is good but should only be done after install is pre-casing complete, pre-drilled and just snug, not too torqued, under the doorstop to be concealed and with shims to prevent the screw from moving the jamb. There are many hinges where a brassy construction screw is not acceptable because of the finish ie black or brushed nickel etc. if anyone says just put one through the hinge.
Nail the legs of casing into the jamb first, then header into jamb. Nail outside next and where legs meet the header, if it doesn't sit correct then a few shims to line them up will do the trick.
That Dap along baseboard top is a painters nightmare ... do not think of not ever smoothing it out! It needs to be painted too because it "yellows" over time.
Lastly .......................... safety glasses! No exceptions. Apprentice 101!
My credentials are of 40 plus years.
After all this time. I never thought of using the 8in1 tool for caulking. Thanks.
I have no plans on doing any of the stuff you do that I watch but I love watching a master at work it's so interesting
Maybe ne day you will diy and make huge returns . Cheers
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY if I do I will be ready thanks to you
I do this for a living full time and always learn a trick or two that will save me hundreds of hours over the next decade.
I should take my doors out and reinstall them once the floor is done
Sorry, but the top door casing looks ridiculous.
At least do a craftsman style square joint if you’re not gonna miter it, it’s not that difficult and looks better than whatever you call this…
Absolutely
You need at least a half inch at the bottom for hardwood floors and an inch for carpet floors so the air return can pull air out of that room when the door is closed unless it's a closet or attic acsess
Tons of great info here! I like to do whatever I can around the house myself to gain experience and to save money and your videos are so helpful with that. Thank you so much!
You can do it! Cheers!
Jeff, I am so glad I have found your channel. I am personally renovating my house after renting it out for 8 years. I am avidly watching the videos on your channel for the various projects that I need to do. Of course, I easily get side tracked and fall down the reno playlist rabbit-hole and watch other things as well. I appreciate the explanations as you go along and have those little ah-ha moments when at the house. It makes me feel like I've hit a milestone. This weekend's chore was to change out the pet door so I can finish up the laundry area.
Modern look with flat baseboards ??? I find it ugly. Also the material is no longer wood. It causes cancer.
I have fancy trim nailers like Milwaukee etc.. but my craftsman 16g has been a great gun. Good to see you using it!
What timing.....doing 2 doors and an entryway tomorrow and i was scared
How is the job going?
Hi Jeff. So far on trim I have seen you fill 18 guage nail holes with DryDex, Acrylic Calk, 45, and now 2 in 1. In your opinion, which gives the best result? What about trim butt joints?
the best result is found with a high elastomeric caulking like dynaflex. Cheers!
Probably best to avoid licking your finger before wiping the caulk. It introduces a whole bunch of live bacteria and other microbes
Doors are always one person installation😂. If you screw the hinge side of the jam without the door in first then install the door and adjust gaps. Making it hard on yourself if you shim from both sides with the door in. 🤷♂️
I have no idea what he’s doing. This was supposed to be a video about adding door trim without mitering. This is door installation
How do you still have working 18v nicad dewalt batteries lmao
Can I please get some info on what materials/kits I should buy for the door jamb?
I found using a wet sponge and a bucket to wipe the caulk off gives me a perfect finish
too much process. My way is easy
Thank you so much for your tips and tricks, just so helpful. As a side note…..love your sense of humour
Oh thank you!
Wait wait... Craftsman?!!!??? HUH!!!??? Come on man, I thought we were Dewalt crew bro!
Hey Jeff, have you done any vids on replacing rotten door jams on exterior doors and weather stripping? I just bought a house and all my exterior doors are rotted at the bottom. Also is it ok to replace the wooden trim with PVC? Love your vids you have helped me a lot and I truly appreciate your advice. Thank you in advance
Hi Bre! sure you can change the bottom with pvc or aluminum. last a lot longer than wood. Cheers!
I wouldn't let this guy touch my doors.
not sure why. looks pretty darn perfect to me Paul.
Does No More Nails dammage the drywall when taking baseboards/casing out? I.e. would you need to redrywall a portion?
just tears off the paper like any caulking will. always cut the drywall paper when removing a caulked on trim to avoid increasing the scope of work. Cheers!
Oops! Wrong trim...
I got a shock (not having allowed for levelling clip height) having got the tiles on the floor i couldnt open either door....doh!
Got out of window ok
Cant get at hinges so how to trim some off bottom in situ....?!
Good video, but hand holding the bottom cut is a really lazy move...no reason to take any chances on an expensive door. Why save 3 minutes vs putting down a saw guide of some sort?
5/8 and a bit. Is that the same thing as a big 5/8?
LOL, or a small 3/4. Cheers!
don't mind me but his so judgemental and says his way is always the best fastest nicest way 😆.. most old timers I know, would not put you and your work down but they would definitely teach you hands on etc
I love metric calculations 😂
Nice detailed explanation 👍🏻
Greetings from the Netherlands 🇱🇺
Glad you enjoyed it!
When is the Reality Renovision channel coming back?!? Your awesome Jeff thanks for everything!
Dear Jeff, I am a new member and have a question. Forgive me if this isn't the correct area to ask. I recently had to replace my Maytag washer with an ASKO (special small footprint for closet) washer/dryer combo. The RPM on minimum spin is 1000 and it vibrates the floor and walls. Is there a way I can shore up the floor joists around this closet area to add stability to this old 1942 cottage, redwood prefab house? (1100 Square feet roughly overall & single wall construction on main living floor) Thanks from Carmel, CA
On the tool description says it a Dewalt circular saw. But my eyes see a red craftsman or milwakee " which one is it..😂
👍👍👍👍
the best tool i ever bought..Bostitch bradnailer and a Makita low db(quiet compressor)...MY GOODNESS the time saved🤙😎🤙
Hi jeff, I recently purchased home in cambridge ontario and would like to finish basement floor. I am not sure weither it has a vapour barrier or not under concrete. I tried your method using plastic bag and tape it to check moisture but I didn’t get anything in the morning. Is there any other way to find out. House build in 1971
AH! Literally about to install my first doors! Flawless timing.
You got this Michael! Cheers!
You will not learn the proper way to hang a door from this clown.
my best tip : do you have something to do at home for renovation ? Don't touch before Jeff does a video. Well.... next doors will be perfect
wow..that was painful to watchl. A new video editor? ugh. not your normal. Jeff video...
I really recommend the Milwaukee nailers, they first nail and then charge immediately for the next nail. So nice and intuitive.
Good to know!
Did I miss something? What happened to that DeWalt saw?
Could have just measured the door cut from the bottom hinge down.
Or just take off the same amount from the door that you took off the jamb and it will keep the same spacing lol
sure. more than 1 way to do everything. But for homeowners , understanding the complexity of the door is also important so they can modify other scenarios as well. Cheers!
Hey Jeff, Do you canucks get material in metric now or still mostly Imperial?
I see you switched over to Craftsman tools how do you like them?
Who uses 28” doors 😂
Do you go back and paint the caulk between top of base and wall?
The old flood , I just make a line,,,,,,, free hand cut. Lol
Jeff , what is the pink filler material you are using ? I am and doing trim work rite now & I have only used minwax wood putty , not the most fun material to sand lol .. thanks In advance !
Drydex
2:59 any tool is the right tool if you use it wrong enough
I've been busy ... as a long time subscriber coming back to some vids ... it's absolutely a delight to see how much the channel has grown ... may all your best wishes come true for you and the ones you love in this new year 2023
You would pick the one door in history that's square, level and plumb. That does nothing to show us how to tackle this difficult job when things are out of whack even just a little bit.
this was new construction. I made videos about doors in old houses as well. Cheers!
Can you help me with my *"Heartburn"* 🤣
This is the best explanation I have found, especially for someone like me who is a new homeowner having to remodel myself
Is that the RP V20 7 1/4 saw? How you liking it? I need a new cordless saw and checking out options
a very decent tool. Cheers!
28:33 I can't help but laugh hearing this 🤣🤣🤣
SO helpful and valuable, all of this info, thanks for sharing!
If I didn't have to match my casing 45s with the rest of the house when I remodel room to room, I would totally go back and do your flat casing, I love that idea. Next house that I reno, I'm doing that.
Does anyone have ideas for dealing with a shallow depth jam? The former owners left us a closet door that's 1/2" too thin on the inside, and never added trim. So there is a 1/2" offset to deal with between the drywall and the edge of the jam to normally would nail the trim into.
You can buy 1/2 Inch by 1/2 Inch square trim to nail to the door to extend it. You can nail that 1/8 off the jam to make your reveal like trim then once you put your casing you give yourself another 1/8 reveal. Sort of like making a jam extension on a window that isn't flush to drywall
Great video all around
this dude knows how to sling caulk
Thx for the normal medium intense
look at Jeff with all those cordless tools cool
I'm surprised you didn't apply tape to the door before cutting it to avoid tear-out.
a sharp blade dose not need tape to help. Cheers!
@Home RenoVision DIY I was just about to say. I was cooking with my friend's mom and she tried to tell me about how using siscors can cut chives so fine and I had to show her how the smashed up onion and puddle of green juice is a consequence of "sharpening" with a slotted grinder. You know the one.
Man I've been watching you since you pretty much began YouTubing. I wish you lived in my area and I could come watch u work. You make everything you do in a video make sense. Other RUclipsrs don't explain in basic understandable teaching. THANK YOU!!!!
Cheers. HAPPY TO HELP.
😍👍
I needed this
Cheers!
Just wanted to say I’m a young new contractor (almost) starting out making the jump from corrections/law enforcement right after college. Worked trades between summers and growing up but not one of the guys I ‘learned’ from had half the knowledge patience or ability to communicate that you do. Your a great teacher and I appreciate the hell out of your videos big dog. Thank you.
I learn so much off of you ! Tremendous as usual
The best line ever when my girl friend has an issue I say "Its only Sheetrock". Plumbing, electrical, hvac, framing. That is my response. You have really given me the confidence to take on DIY. By the way, I see you are expanding. When is the baby due? LOL
Lol.. 😂
Cheers, Jeff!
👍👍
Great idea 💡 👍 👏 positive 👍
Thanks 👍
He hol
i would HIGHLY recommend uploading all of your videos to rumble, brandnewtube, brighteon, andbitchute they’re missing how to content there.
👍🏽
2" width is not enough for width because if things aren't plumb and if using full 3/4 jambs that only leaves a 1/4" to fit jambs, not enough.
jambs are all 5/8 and yes 2" is enough when you are framing because you will plumb the wall. Cheers!
You can't depend on framers to plumb everything perfect, then studs twist. I tell framers at least 2 1/4" to21/2" inches. Plus you shouldn't be using 5/8" mdf on an1 3/4" solid wood door, no strength
Audio sounds like one of those legal disclaimers. im out.
Top comment is a bot network advertising a telegram scammer. I Love Susan of RUclips Fame!
When. You do commercial that comes without asking.
Sir, you did put a little bit of weight last time I saw you.
I am now on a herbalife meal replacement. feeling great!
@Home RenoVision DIY add creatine to that if you're working out. it's an amino acid that saturates your muscle with water and skyrocket's your explosive potential.
This video has to be one of your best on tips to install doors and trim.
I always watch till the end……and I always pick up on your tips! Thanks
“Get the good stuff “ 😂
Glad it was helpful! Cheers!
i thot this title was sexually explicit and was shocked to see it is actually about some bald guy whittling away at wood which could also be sexual but i was hoping a female (a real one) was here
Get a life!. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Hi! I was tryin to have a little fun , didnt realize you would ever answer stuff. Ever done any log home work? Heavier craft than using sticks. I live in a log home started in maybe mid 1880s, one section built maybe 1929 and an extension in 1987, curious what you would do with an historic structure like that.
There are some excellent books on traditonal carpentry methods. A classic one is "Illustrated Interior Carpentry" by Graham Blackburn. Good luck, please don't use mdf! Lol
Just FYI, when you say "hey guys, Jeff here..." you leave out women from your conversation (plus grammatically incorrect since we aren't all guys who watch your channel). Instead say "hi everyone, Jeff here...". Much more inclusive.
Another example:
"...so you guys get a professional look..." try "...so you get a professional look...". Can you see how saying "you" versus "you guys" provides the feeling you are talking to the watcher, whether girl or boy. This is really important for our young girls to feel included, versus being confused because she is always being called a guy. Please please and thank you
