It's amazing how clear this footage is from the 1930s.
🤣👍
Lol
Jealous this guy can do that hood of a job with hand tools while you need every power tool on the market ?
Yeah, it’s nice how pot lights came back in style.
Hahaha I thought buddy was Amish!
What a treat to watch a master carpenter doing things the good ole fashion way....with manual hand tools!!! It's what sets them apart!!
this takes years and years of practice, and even then... he's just casually freehanding a straight line, getting perfect cuts with a handsaw, ...
@@Mx199D hand tool woodworking is pretty interesting. I have a few hand planes and a couple of Japanese pull saws and I'd say give it a try. The thing is you don't need to make a perfect cut because that's what the hand plane is for, to straighten it out and the caulk and paint will cover imperfections. I was a woodworker for a bit and a painter for a bit too lol
I'd say the hardest part is learning how to properly sharpen and setup the hand plane lmao
It's really incredible. My jaw hit the floor when I saw him freehand that line.
I think it's fair to say this is artisan woodworking. Like I can't imagine anyone paying their own money to have a house built with a hand saw. The results? similar, or not as good as a table saw, but easily 10x as long to do.
Hey, lets find an accountant to do our taxes with a slide ruler instead of a calculator or software.
That rip cut on the stool with a hand saw...Imagine trimming a whole house that way? Makes you appreciate power tools and the guys back in the day that made a living working with hand tools.
+zimsjeep I've refinished some door and window trim out of a late 19th century house that was all cut by hand. The workmanship is very impressive.
On the other hand, I've worked on some houses, where the worksmanship wasn't as great.. said mildly .. Not everyone working in those days, was a great craftsman.. but seeing tommy work is always a pleasure.. We had a good laugh at work the other day, remembering how many times he made us feel like something is "easy" and we F'd ourselves up on it.. like ripping this board right here - I feel like if I tried that, it would take me at least two tries... and a lot more plaining
zimsjeep my dad trims our house by hand
zimsjeep bbbbnn
They got paid for their time though. It took them a lot longer to trim a house and they got paid a lot more.
Balanced out.
Tom's freehand straight line is most impressive, and is a technique that transcends trades that everyone should practice. He is locking his middle finger in place against his thumb, and using it as a stop to drag against the material. You also see him use this technique when drawing the wood glue down the boards, and could be used for, say, silicone in a bathroom, or cleaning caulk lines.
“I wanna get it stawted on my saw hawse”
East coast accents are truly the best. Very skilled guy, can tell he’s been doing that awhile.
Awesome carpenter. I worked years back with a gentleman like Tommy. Old timer, only believed in hand tools. Gotta respect a true tradesman...
with trim work hand tools are excellent & you have more control for detailed cuts.
yes sir
I promised to install a window, jam, and trim. I promised the homeowner this knowing I dont know the first thing when it comes to trim. I have watched this three times, and now i'm confident I can do this project tomorrow! wish me luck
Wow, this looks so easy. I can't wait to try it, spend several days trying to replicate and then hire a contractor to correct my work.
I just wish wood wasn't so expensive
That's exactly what happened to me
want my number i have as many tools just about as Tommy's coworker Norm Abrahams, can provide references and photos just joking
Tommy's going to go out in the yard and forge the nails
william skrainski then going to the forest to fell some timber
But first he is going to mine the steel to make the tools with, LOL!
😂😂😂 you guys literally made the milk come out my nose😂😂😂
He's gonna take that lady to the bedroom so he can have children that can work the farm.
🤣🤣😂😅😭🤣
"Tommy, I'm pretty impressed with all that."
*crickets* :)
+A D Probably, but the smug silence plays better. :)
+A D I've seen similar with a bungee cord. Not sure if it was TOH or elsewhere. Clever trick for sure.
Timeless old school techniques from a master. So glad they decided to show doing things this way.

Listen hard. I'm pretty sure Tommy goes "mh" that sounds almost like "meh" :D
I always love Tommy's lifehacks for measuring things. He makes it not only less-intimidating, but actually FUN to take on the challenge of accurately measuring things without worrying about the numbers. Tommy's got a great brain for seeing the interconnectedness of things, which is awesome since most American math education doesn't teach us about number relationships.
I like Tommy's chuckle about the math help, seemed genuine/personal
That's the way my father does it !i do a least 3 windows by time he installs 1!!! I'm very grateful for power tools!!! Pops does it old school...good video .
Tommy I’m pretty impressed with all that . Tommy says nothing
Lmao His face afterwards is priceless😂💀
Lol
Tommy: "Silence wench, I do not wish to be horny anymore." Guts - Susumu Hirasawa
There's no need to say you're impressed with somebody's work if they're a master carpenter. That's like telling a doctor you're impressed with his medical knowledge and surgical skills.
"Okay all you need to do is putty up the holes, primer and paint!"
Homeowner: What's putty?
The only man I know that can drive a trim nail with Paul Bunyan’s hammer!
I wish I had a mentor like Tommy. What a great dude.
I was impressed with the freehand drawing and planing of the eased edge. Then immediately unimpressed as he bashed and dented the new wood with his hammer when nailing it in. :D
The holes need to have putty put in them anyways and then putty will need leveling/sanding followed by paint. Those hammer marks will not be visible at all after all that if you do it properly.
Tommy Silva is an absolute unit
We're all impressed with Tommy, lady.
I love watching Tom Silva. This guy is the absolute pro at anything wood.
Now he's just showing off....Great work!!
nicely done sir, I truly appreciate someone who still knows how to use hand tools. I make my window stools a bit deeper though and then anchor the stool into the framing with 2-1/2" screws drilled at a very steep angle. The apron usually hides these screw holes and you can put a lot of weight on the stools. Again very nice video showcasing your skills.
No one:
Tommy: *freehands a straight line*
@J his hand is the tool!
@J It's easier to do it with your hand than with some gadget.
As an art major, i testify that his straight line capability is superhuman
Very impressive!
I gasped tbh
Thank you very much for sharing. Tommy has ton of experience. Who needs power tools, just as good
Amazing to watch a skilled craftsman. My teacher was like this. I can tell from some comments, that there are some who are not so skilled and or haven’t been taught what to do, when you don't have your power tools or modern gadgets!!
Power tool ? HA! Tommy is the power tool. This was done by hand and came out better then 99% of carpenters work in my area.
One of the most impressive things I've ever seen Tommy do ... Very nice
watch the one where he builds the deck steps. The video is on RUclips its a back deck where the steps angle up like a pyramid/triangle.
Happily surprised to see him using a hand saw. Awesome
Yesssss! 💙 I was watching while taking a break from our new old house and Jamb liners is they key word ive been needing !!! Thank you ! I knew they were wood single hung windows but they previous owners painted the jamb liners so we cant open most of the windows and I couldn't find what this part was called ! Ive been watching since i was a kid ( esp sundays before noon mass) and knew id figure it out eventually lol
These videos are choc full of tips and inspiration. Love'm.. Great to see craftsman at work. Greetings from Bonnie Scotland.
As nice and harmless as this guy seems; I promise you wouldn't want to make him mad. Those old time carpenters have to have some serious forearm strength
Lol I can see the steel cord he calls forearm muscles.
I worked with a master carpenter back in the 70’s and that’s how he did it, no power tools.
Anne- "good fit!"
Tom- silently thinking to himself "yeah it's a good fit!.. I'm Tom mutha fuckin' Silva!!"
Tommy, you are one talented dude! Well done.
That subtle pass at Tommy at 6:14 😂
That’s what I was thinking! “Tommy, I’m pretty impressed.” He was having none of it.
Tom is a boss.
Tommy is the 👑 of craftsmanship.. Period.
Tommy's the type of guy who would show up at a beautiful girl's house . . . . . . "Hello I'm here to fix your window" . . . . . . . and then he would just fix it.
Yessir.. True gentlemen
@Liberty AboveAllElse no he wouldn't he keeps it in his tool belt so he'd say "..........."
Tommy’s a Master Carpenter and I’m a Master Plumber.
Tom Silva and Norm Abram are the best, I’ve learned so much from them. Thank you guys👍
Excellent video to install window trim! I plan on using this method for our new farmhouse. And, I plan on using a handsaw for better accuracy.
I enjoyed watching that way too much. Tom is the best.
Impressing the ladies with good hard working skills is worth more than all the money in the world.
super precise cuts by handsaw. respect.
Amazing hand work Tom!
And that's how Tommy "no table saw" Silva got his name
This guy is the man period.😳🔥
the old school just the best with that master..👍
tommy is amazing truly an artist
Kicking it old school with the hand saw!
it's impressive. He used some simple tools and made it so easily.
This guy is an awesome teacher
Great woodworking skills!
The old "sa has". Love it
Tom is the Man!
I just did this myself at home. Thanks!
Old school. Master craftsman.
What an absolute wizard with those hands of zeus .. im ready to bust out
That was nice to watch..I'm subscribing!
Super, hard to find people can do like him
And once again, "Tommy the Master Craftsman" makes it look easy, "Old School Style" using hand tools only !
A lot of people are complaining about the style of trim. While I agree that it wouldn't be my first choice, I'd bet he is matching the existing trim elsewhere in the house.
What a experience
Very Helpful, Thank you
I love all this old house and the videos they create, I only wish they would talk about pricing, how much would a decent handyman charge for this type of service? labor and material separate.
Keep it up This old house! you make great quality TV.
Thanks
Sir you do a great job
Wow I appreciate how things were put together without power tools
Really easy to follow and useful thanks
He has the patience of a Saint!
Thank you great video follow the instructions to the T job came out beautiful
incredible work.
Friggin awesome !
: "Tommy I'm pretty impressed with all that"
Coming up next on This Old House " How to frame your headboard "
Lmao
Excellent saw skills
My dad taught me with a manual saw. He hated electric tools. I will always remember soaping up the saw blade with bar soap before we started.
Loved seeing this with no power tools!
"I wanna get it starded on my saw hauses"
Mr. Sal LOL
Tommy I’m really impressed.
*Tommy doesn’t care*
There's no need to say you're impressed with somebody's work if they're a master carpenter. That's like telling a doctor you're impressed with his medical knowledge and surgical skills.
😂
I'm impressed as well.
Always great informational videos. Thank you.
Why no reveal on the casing and header? Super nice wood windows a small reveal to show that nice wood , would (lol) have gave a better look.
Damn Tommy those lines!!! How much do you have to pay to watch Tommy work? Sign me up already!!!
I thought he was going to do a 45 degree cut with the handsaw. Lol
Super informative. So much so I’ve decided that this is insanity to do for 13 windows and will just be repainting instead 😂
Calling Tommy's line of work "skilled labor" is almost insulting. This is **premier** craftsmanship and workmanship.
The things I've learned just from watching must pale in comparison from what Tommy, and other master craftsmen like him, can teach in person.
NICE JOB TOMMY
Impressive.. that's what we call a master carpentar.
1:49 "🥴 im glad you did that math tommy" lmaoooo
Did he just admit he stole her old compass from Geometry class @4:20? Tommy's straight up gangsta
Imagine going through all that work to fabricate the stool and the nail splits it apart. Also tom was showing off big time with the pencil skills
“I’m glad you did that math, Tommy.” 😂🤘
"Me too" - Window
Awesome video.
Great job!
Hubert - Germany
That's pretty cool, I thought the windowsill was the bottom trim on the outside or inside... kewl :D
nice work. good editing. nothing fancy here, just the facts...
Who else watches Tommy and goes "wow I'm an idiot, why didn't I think of that?"
Not me, im wondering how the saw marks are going to get sanded out.
Paint
I think that but then remember I probably couldn't do it anyway.
Imagine the zone time you get by ripping everything by hand...
As an European ( Austrian) certifikated Master- Woodworker it`s allways a big fun for me to watch these guys doing theyre "jobs" !! Looks like American Woodworkers can`t install anything without a nailgun to shoot visible Pins or drive in visible screws! This makes Woodworking very simple when filler, Primer an Paint cover up everything!!
Nothing between the Window an the Walls that seals up against Air or moisture!
The Costumer will need more Time to fill and sand and pint and sand and pint this few parts than the hole installation took time!
If i would be the contractor of this Windowframing i would be ashamed to take money for this
work!!!
Go ahead and make more Homevids - so i can lough again !!! But don`t call yourself a
proffesional !!
We used the saw dust from what we cut to fill in the nail holes I loved hanging with the old farts as a kid they taught me alot of tricks of the traid
I love this guy but when he free hands a straight line I wanna' throw the TV out the window! Because I've seen Tommy do it a million times, I keep trying but just can't! Lol
It may be your saw
He's using his other finger on the other edge of the board and making a scribing tool out of his hand. Still impressive but maybe you didn't notice how he's actually doing it.
You will after enough splinters
@@kevlar1482 On his third hand that's off camera? The one on camera is offset from the line by quite a bit other than when he gets the saw started.
@@ibealion1 if you mean when he's cutting it, keep the saw at a low angle and it will be more straight, if you go 90 degrees your cut will wander. If you mean drawing the line, he's just using his finger as a scribe and really takes no skill, just tough fingertips to not get a splinter.
Tom Silva is Master! I watched so many videos of him that I know when he has a lolly in the mouth... 😊
