River would’ve been an absolute superstar in music and acting if he was still alive.. his role in stand by me will still be one of an all time greats!
Way better than his brother.
Leo literally took his place.
@@pollypocket4604
They are both great actors. Leo is an incredible actor and no one could’ve played the part of titanic better than him. And I love River Phoenix, he’s phenomenal. But I just don’t compare they’re both great.
@@andymullarx6365
Joaquin is a fantastic actor, they’re totally different in their ways, both great
@@jeanniemotherof3 oh I agree both great! But I still think Leo kind of stepped into Rivers shoes and took his place. There were many roles in the 90s that were originally offered to River that Leo ended up getting (not titanic).
I've always felt River Phoenix was my generation's (Gen X) version of James Dean. So much talent & promise - such an empathetic & caring person, whose empathy made him an even better actor. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I agree such a loss
He was on his way to legend status which must have angered Johnny Depp who has zero charisma.
They were both women
Definitely Joy! These dumb zoomers are calling we Gen-X 'boomers" .....really ignorant. Remember in '89 the Kiss pepsi commercial for us....something about GX don't remember. Anyway, lots of speculation about River's death.
Remember in 97 the spice girls Pepsi commercial for gen x?
It's unbearable losing a brother, let alone two. My older brother was murdered by his friend and my other brother died of complications of Aids. I relate with Joaquin and his family, I'm 49 years old and I miss my brothers dearly.
I’m so sorry Jose. I hope you find Peace.
@@ASM881 thank you from the bottom of my heart. I always pray for it.
@@Robertasparrowdarko thank you, it's been tough. God bless you and your family.
My heart breaks for your loss 💔
@@isaidwhatisaid76 thank you for your kind words. Blessings to you and your family.
I never knew River personnally. He lived near me in the early 90s and one of my girlfriends was friends with him and his family and used to have dinner with them. I saw RIver at some shows in Seattle. At one Melvins show I was in the pit and so was he. He was sitting on the stage watching the crowd and I was right next to him. Then he got up and started moshing and he was bumping into me. He fell down on the ground and I fell right on top of him face to face on the floor. We just stared at each other like, whoa dude. Then someone picked me up and we both picked him up and the show went on. That my River story :)
Sure you did
The desperation in Joaquin’s voice is heartbreaking 🥺
@monique mc very true I mean he did what any other brother would do I mean what could you do at that point you know he's dying how long till the paramedics get there if they even got there I mean obviously I did but how long did it take 20 minutes even if they got there within 5 minutes cuz they've saved him only God knows that answer but yeah very sad watching this video made me feel very heartbroken gone way too soon
I know. :( Plus that operator is terrible.
I went to the Viper Room about 10 years ago. I can't tell you how eerie it felt being there. I even stood right where River died. I closed my eyes and said a little prayer for him. I felt this strange energy, the hair stood up on my neck.
I saw a show at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus just before it was demolished. almost 20 years later since the incident and it still felt so weird to be right where Dimebag was shot. Another big loss.
Every year after River's death, Johnny closed Viper on the anniversary of his death until he sold his portion of the club. There are numerous discussions on River's death. Some say he was actually murdered. Some theories say he was trying to commit suicide because he hated the direction he felt his career going at the time. Fun fact, Christian Slater donated his salary from "Interview With a Vampire" in River's honor.
another fun fact: John Frusciante is the one who handed River the speedball and said “take this and you’ll feel fantastic”. Rivers fatal mistake was trusting a scumbag junkie
The fact checkers
It's true. John Frusciante killed River. He ran out the back door with Johnny when Paramedics were called 30 min after River fell unconscious. In my opinion they're a guilty of his death, John, Johnny, Joaquin, rain, Samantha and his pimp of a mother who cancelled investigations. Hired a lawyer for everyone to stay quiet.
There was only one person who gave River the speedball that killed him.
@@Robertasparrowdarko it's fact. Just covered by lies. Everyone knows J.F gave him that drink that killed him. All comes down to a bunch of jealous idiots that unfortunately River called friends and family.
I've been to the Viper Room many times. The place is spooky, not just because of River Phoenix, but other people have supposedly died in the building...
And occult rituals...
The concert footage from the Go-Gos 'our lips are sealed' video were shot in that building.
An episode of Ghost Adventures was at the viper room. Pretty creepy
I’m sure
@@gregory46236 Isn't that the episode when they talk to the lady bartender at the Viper Room? I remember that episode well. This lady talked about how much she loved River Phoenix and how he always spoke to her. The Ghost Adventures guys picked up some EVPs of River. Spooky!! I'm older than River was and he was such a great actor. When he played the young Indiana Jones and we get to see the young Indy and how he became who he is from those experiences. Great movie and River was so fantastic in it. RIP River Phoenix. You are missed. 🙏
I'm the same age as you so I remember him coming up in the late 80's. I think back at how absolutely huge he would have been. He was basically if you merged DiCaprio and Depp together. Crazy talented guy, and always humble and shy in interviews.
Unfortunately there is also be a lot of jealousy in Hollywood. Apparently, River was doing a movie with Johnny's ex Winona, so who knows.
I grew up in the 90's. River is my generation's James Dean
I love River Phoenix. He was a brilliant actor. When his character cried, I cried. When his character laughed, I laughed. I also enjoyed his singing. What’s sad is, if people were paying attention, he might have lived. May he Rest In Peace.
I was at the Viper Room that night with some friends. I saw him there. We left to go to a party in the hills. Crushed me the next morning when I found out. Great job on this.
Wow!!! How did he look??
I had 2 realives that saw him having the seizures. Sadly they are now deceased. 6 months after River. I was only 3 when River passed
@@kimabrahams1940 Not good
That didn't happen. But it makes for a good story!!!
Did u talk with him? Or what was he wearing and how was he acting?
Poor Joaquin. I've been a fan of his since Her and wasn't aware of River until a little later after I saw that movie.
Hearing him begging the ambulance to come to save his dying brother just breaks my heart. Reminds you to tell your brother that you love him.
I only knew Joaquin for being River's brother ! And from Gladiator (2001). Joaquin has that sexy villain look going on...
I know Joker obvs but haven't seen it.
@@stephaniechristol1625 worth the watch! Joaquin is an incredible actor
@@Astro.slugs1 Agreed... I thought Joaquin sexier that Russell Crowe as Gladiator. As well as a good actor!
@@Astro.slugs1 I'll take your word for it.
What remains unforgivable to me is that River was pretty much dying inside that club for over 30 minutes before he collapsed outside. Many witnessed the shape he was in, and ignored it. That was a 30 minute window in which he could have, possibly, been saved.
I know right!! They should have called as soon as he started throwing up
This is hindsight talking right here. Do you know how much drugs celebrities and Hollywood ppl are on? A lot of those ppl probably didn’t take it seriously. On top of the fact that he literally said that River Phoenix was not easily identifiable to others due to the black hair. If his own brother and girlfriend didn’t do much until it was too late, why do you expect others to? No one is responsible for River Phoenix but himself. And please spare me any conscious talk because I’m sure you have or would’ve done anything if it was a complete stratify never heard of

Wow gnarly ! I bet it’s his ghost
@@uncooldispatch5438 not sure what it was I was definitely a sad feeling being in that room

Ghost adventures investigated here. Look it up, they got great evps.
I’m not from the US, but I’m curious to know where the Viper Room is located (exactly), because I did my research on Google, but it’s hard to find this one…
Regarding his drug use, Martha plimpton has stated that the main reason she broke up with him several years earlier was his inability to get clean, so sounds like drug use was a bigger issue in his life.
I never knew they were a couple. She played Joaquin's sis in Parenthood.
Yes, but the lethal speedball was given or him by John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Not an accident at all.
@@texaslyoness8537 so you're saying john killed river.
@@texaslyoness8537 If we are to believe the story that he had been sober for some time, that may have contributed to his death. He may have taken a common dose (combination) for when he was using regularly. But because he had been clean for a while, his tolerance to both drugs would have been a lot lower than usual. Just a theory, but it's quite common for people to OD after they've been clean for a while because they no longer have a high tolerance for the drugs (usually Heroin) and they load up too big of a shot.
@@packlesswolf1 oh, come on ffs. A drug user needs drugs from somewhere and people die taking heroin and coce. Learn to live with it
I was 18 years old and grew up with a huge crush on River. His death was devastating. We lost a real talent that day. Rip
Same here. I had a huge crush on River!!
Had and have...🥲
I had just turned 15 on on the 4th of October in 1993. I was devastated when I heard of River's death.
Wonder if someone was jealous of River and took him out. Sad
Yep Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist John Frusciante gave River the mixed drink that killed him.
I will never think River did this to his self ,, and I will keep my little mouth shut 🤐
He looked like a younger Kurt Cobain, such a tragedy two great artists😔😔
Layne Staley also died because of speedball ... R.I.P
RIP
Wasn't he dead for days before his body discovered?
@@bellahoughton84 yes, his death was very sad and lonely
Did he take it intentionally tho?
River was given a drink with extremely high doses of both coke and dope.
Close to an ounce total. That’s way way way way too much for anyone to willingly take unless they were suicidal.
A few key things missing from the video
1. This was the day before Halloween and he died past midnight on Halloween morning.
2. John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers had a very big role in this. There is some debate on this but it seems he's the guy that was giving River the drugs.
3. River could have been saved if they did not waste well over 10 mins outside the club with River on the ground like that. Joaquin didn't want to call 911 because of the news headline it would generate. If they just called 911 right away and explain the OD they could have saved him.
Glad to see someone else bring up your 2nd point!
It was a liquid speedball given to River by Fruciante and because River had been clean during the filming of his last movie, he didn't account for his lowered tolerance. River had had a drug problem long before this.... I don't know where this Michael/Grimm guy got that River was anti-drugs!! He was struggling to get work because of being high on set of a couple movies. His addict status was well known within that early 90s Sunset Strip "scene"....
(My source is direct from one of the bar staff who was there that night)
this i wondered about. your brother, friend looks likely to pass out then leaves, stumbling outside or was he led outside? then full blown convulsions. A Hollywood reporter (or?) sees a homeless person struggling with his life. I mean wth! I'd call 911 immediately while someone was rendering aid

@@amberblair8379 Appreciate your post. Glad for fact checkers such as yourself.
Not to mention that his buddies Johnny Depp, Flea, and Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers were performing ‘Micheal Stipe’; a song written by there band ‘P,’ in which River Phoenix is mentioned in the line: “I finally got to talk to Micheal Stipe, but I didn’t get to see his car, him and River Phoenix we’re leaving on the road tomorrow.” All the while River was outside the Viper Room (owned by Johnny) experiencing convulsions. Note that Michael Stipe (of R.E.M) was another close friend of River, who dedicated much of his work to him before and after his death.
Broke my heart, I'm 46 and was 18 when he died, I had loved him all my teenage years. Corey Haim was another love, what is truly heartbreaking is the truth behind Hollywood and the things they went through to get as far as they did..things aren't always what they seem..
I may be younger than all of these 80's heartthrob and never met any of them yet I like them more than modern actors you see on films these days. River, Corey haim, and Jonathan brandis happens to be my 80's crushes and all of them are long gone is so unfortunate and sad how young they are with so much talent and potential to be a big actors. life that cut short is devastating.may their souls rest in paradise. 🌷🕊

I've been to the Viper Room and I remember my girlfriend showing me that exact spot on the sidewalk where River passed away. It's so sad, what a waste. 😒
I grew up in Arcadia, and worked at the Methodist Hospital in the mid-1980s, so that was a surprise! In 1993, I drove past The Viper Room the day after River died there. It was eerie.

Kurt Cobain dedicated "Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam" to him shortly after.
I did not know that. Sad he himself would be dead a year later. That was such a great song on the Unplugged album.

Went here the end of June, big River fan. Such an eerie feeling staring at that concrete right outside the door knowing his fate.
He would be bigger than any of those celebrities because he had much bigger *soul* ...sweet sweet boy....❣
Wrong! That’s why the took him out! … anyone with a soul in Hollywood won’t last
@@uncooldispatch5438 Right? That's so sad but so true! He wasn't willing to sell his soul to the "devil"...and that cost him life..but his legacy will live regardless, they couldn't kill that!
Dancing with the devil is something we all do and are blessed to have survived the crazy things but not all are so fortunate. Great vid man, thanks!
River Phoenix was a phenomenal talent rest in peace
His passing just flat out sucks!!! Nothing more I can say about that. Great video, Michael!
My heart and prayers will always be with Samantha , Rain , Joaquin and the Phoenix family ❤️🙏
Samantha Mathis initially stated.. John Frusciante gave him a blue cup and said.. "drink this, it'll make you feel fabulous. Years later she changed her statement and refuses to speak on it.
River Phoenix's smart guy, he's not going to snort enough cocaine to kill an 🐘
Hunter and johnny Depp were good friends. It's beyond sad about River Phoenix it broke my heart
It’s funny how the tapes in the club mysteriously vanished that night as well as the person you were talking about that went missing. The fact that River was given that lethal speedball drink that he didn’t even know what it was bc many witnesses said he asked..and the fact that someone gave it to him…w/o telling him what was in the drink….(we’ve heard many names mentioned)…Witnesses coming forward saying that River was crying out that he was dying and JD kicked him outside to the curb..and no police called until way later. Finally 911 was called but no one said anything about him o.d-ing so no life saving measurements taken and he ultimately died. Yet…most people don’t think that’s strange and they are ok to say he just died of drug overdose!!! Yeah right…there’s no doubt in my mind that he was murdered…too many strange coincidences. It makes me sick and I mean look at all the sick crap that has happened around so many people..famous and not. There’s no conspiracy if it’s true and idk if everyone is starting to wake up to the fact that most of the “conspiracy theories” have been found out to be accurate or are coming into the light. I could name other famous people w very similar and eerie circumstances that somehow end up dead as well. The way I see it is this:
1 coincidence- okay.
2 coincidences-that’s really strange…but okay.
3 or more coincidences- yeah…something is definitely wrong with this picture!!
Rip to all our beloved lost ones…I hope you’re all together dancing and singing in heaven with all the angels!

@@andreamarin4296 they are a old band
The “side entrance” is the actual entrance. What you’re looking at is both the exit and band loading in/out door. There is also a small secret room with a view of the stage. We always called it, ‘The Johnny Room’ after owner Johnny Depp.
Ryan Reynolds?? 😉
I drive by the viper room that night saw a lot of cop cars ambulance….. etc. My Mom and I had no idea what was going on. My husband at the time had a hard time getting in touch with me because of all the fires. When he finally did he told me about River. What he said was “ Did you hear about your Boy?” Because I was a big big fan. I was floored. RIP
He didn’t die on Halloween Night. He died on Halloween Morning. They went out on the night of Oct 30 (Devil’s Night for Crow fans) & he was pronounced dead at 1:51 am on the morning of the 31st.
This is technically true
Thank you so much for this!! I loved River as a 14 year old teenager and loved him for the same reasons as being against drugs and being a vegan. As my tears fell when he passed, this was the most devastating of it all!
Now as I’m coming up to being 50 years old, I can only imagine how much more he could’ve done! He’s a legend in my heart forever!
I miss River Phoenix. RIP. His acting was AMAZING...I am happy for his brother but every time his bro wins an award, I think what would River have accomplished.
Interesting is that 8852 the address for the Viper Room, equals 23, the same age River was when he died.
I miss River! He had a bright future ahead of him! He was signed to start Interview with a Vampire before he passed.
The whole night was a very sinister turn of events. The Viper Room. River dying on Halloween. River having a hard time with Judy Davis, an actress he'd long admired and was excited to work with giving him shit: by all accounts she treated him appallingly to the point where he asked the director to postpone love scenes. The director found her very difficult said "I'd never had a problem with an actress before but she (Judy Davis) made up for 30 year's!" River's last take on the set of Dark Blood, where the camera was left on, ended with him emerging as a perfect silhouette as the lights were turned off amongst the glowing candles. River's head went down as he paused for a moment then walked towards the camera. River's last take. The cinematographer said it was the eeriest thing he'd ever experienced: "It still gives me the chills".
The “Main door” on Sunset is actually the exit door. The main entrance is the one in the side street
They used to open the door on Sunset between bands for people to get some fresh air and again after the main act has finished for everyone to exit
I remember when this happened. I was 20 years old. I was DEVASTATED. loved all things River & the crew he ran with. Such my jam in the 80’s-90’s
Love your channel, thank you for sharing this video about River, he just had a birthday Aug. 23rd he would have turned 51, it’s hard to imagine him being that age because he died so young...
Here’s a poem I wrote about River Phoenix, it’s from my poetry collection
“12:12 Midnight”
"Forever River"
A peaceful river flows from the start,
Twenty three days and twenty three nights apart.
The clear water calm turning into rushing rapids,
Tearing you up before you get out,
But like a phoenix from the ashes,
He will rise,
A beautiful spirit,
Haunting striking eyes.
A room full of vipers,
A venom so strong,
Taken away in the hollow morning songs.
This river treasure,
Like a shooting star,
Lights up the night sky,
And just for a moment,
Shines brighter than all the other stars.
Seemingly gone forever,
But never forgotten.

I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I heard that River Phoenix had died. I was listening to the radio on a walkman, swinging at the park in the rain. I was 29 years old, and my last name was not yet "Phoenix." His death had a impact on me because he was so young, so talented and good looking. He had his whole life ahead of him, and he died of an overdose. My boyfriend at the time was an alcoholic. Such a shame. They announced his death on the radio and then they played "No Rain" by Blind Melon... and it was raining.
your story sent many chills through my body

Sad confession; I came out of Turner's Liquor store on the corner that night, looked to the left and saw there was someone passed out by the curb behind some garbage cans or other (There used to be some bins and paper vending machines between the Liquor Store and the Viper Room) I felt sorry for whoever it was, could only see his legs and shoes, but figured it was the usual drunk, and just went home. I lived at the top of Larrabee right up from that corner. The next day I heard he died and where. I couldn't believe I had seen him and didn't think of going up to the person, which was unlike me. I usually approach people asleep or passed on the sidewalk and try to get them to get up and go somewhere safe. Still can't forgive myself, thinking if only a few minutes might have made a difference :-( RIP guy.

@@donsous2971 His LIFE STORY and the people who knew him say otherwise. An autopsy does not sum up a life. And how does the autopsy even negate what I said??😂😂😂 " The autopsy says Dan Akroyd did NOT warn him to stop doing heroin. The autopsy also states he was NOT so high he could barely function on the set of Thing Called Love."
i can’t believe that you thought of this and wrote it down seriously lmao
the day people stop ignoring the fact that river had problem and in fact was a junkie is the day he finally rests in peace
@@MsAggie78 you seem to really hate River. The real truth will come out soon.
Greetings & Respect from New York. I enjoyed watching this. You told River’s Story & Time Line with such Compassion & Respect. Thank you.
Can you do a video on Dominique Dunne? She and River were both killed in West Hollywood. They were both taken to Ceder Sinai .
Such a great video..I couldn't image how his brother felt on the phone..just sad. I was just doing the filming locations here in Portland to My own private Idaho today and was in some of the places he stood...then this pops us..eerie and cool
Very in depth video. I have never known this level of detail about that night. It is always such a loss when celebs, they are just people too, pass away so young for no reason except drug abuse. Hope it wasn't slipped to him unknowingly since he was anti drug use. Is strange for sure. Others.....Farley, Belushi, Haim, etc, such a waste. Thx again for your work.
Beautiful job, like always awesome research.. always enjoy your content
Thanks for posting. Great video. Was there in Hollywood when that happened. I remember that day. So sad.
